    • Chapter 9: The boarding process had taken longer than Ryder expected.   There were lines.   Security checkpoints.   Ticket verification.   Passport checks.   Crew members directing passengers in every direction.   By the time Ryder and Marshall finally stepped aboard the ship, Ryder felt as though he’d already traveled hundreds of miles.   Then he saw the interior.   And immediately forgot how tired he was.   The ship was enormous.   Bright marble floors stretched beneath towering ceilings. Massive windows overlooked the harbor. Elegant staircases curved upward toward multiple decks. Everywhere he looked, passengers wandered about with expressions identical to his own.   Wonder.   “This place is insane,” Ryder whispered.   Marshall grinned.   “Told you.”   “No, seriously.”   Ryder slowly turned in a circle.   “It’s bigger than the mall.”   “It probably is.”   A crew member eventually directed them toward their stateroom deck.   The deeper they moved into the ship, the more real everything became.   The vacation.   The cruise.   Avalon.   It was all actually happening.   Eventually they reached a long hallway lined with identical cabin doors.   Marshall checked the room numbers.   Then smiled.   “Perfect.”   “What?”   Marshall pointed.   “That’s yours.”   Ryder looked.   Then looked at the door directly across the hallway.   “And that’s mine.”   Ryder blinked.   “Wait.”   Marshall shrugged casually.   “I talked to one of the representatives.”   “You did?”   “Figured it’d be easier if we were nearby.”   Ryder couldn’t hide his relief.   A weight immediately lifted from his shoulders.   He’d never admit just how nervous he’d been about spending a week alone aboard a massive cruise ship.   Knowing Marshall was directly across the hall helped.   A lot.   “Thanks.”   Marshall waved it off.   “No big deal.”   But secretly, Marshall was very pleased with himself.   It had taken more effort than he let on.   Several phone calls.   Several emails.   A conversation at check-in.   Worth every bit of it.   Because everything was falling into place exactly as he’d hoped.   Ryder opened his cabin door.   Then stopped.   His eyes widened.   “Whoa.”   The room wasn’t luxurious compared to some of the suites advertised in the brochures.   But to Ryder?   It felt enormous.   The room alone was nearly the size of his apartment’s living area.   There was a large bed.   A sitting area.   A television.   A desk.   A private bathroom.   A closet.   A window overlooking the ocean.   Compared to his cramped apartment back home, it felt almost unbelievable.   Marshall leaned against the doorway.   “Not bad, huh?”   “Not bad?”   Ryder laughed.   “This room is bigger than half my apartment.”   Marshall couldn’t argue with that.   Once Marshall left to unpack his own things, Ryder began settling in.   For the first time since arriving, he was alone.   The room grew quiet.   Outside the window, workers moved across the dock preparing for departure.   Inside, Ryder carefully unpacked his duffel bag.   T-shirts.   Shorts.   Jeans.   Toiletries.   A few souvenirs he’d planned to trade if he met anyone interesting.   Everything found its place.   The unfamiliar room slowly began feeling a little more comfortable.   A little more like his.   Then he reached the bottom of the bag.   His hand paused.   The package.   His overnight protection.   Immediately the excitement faded slightly.   The familiar embarrassment returned.   Even alone, he felt awkward looking at it.   Ryder glanced toward the closed cabin door.   Then toward the closet.   Then toward the drawers.   Nobody was watching.   Nobody would know.   Still.   His face warmed.   The entire situation felt ridiculous.   He was twenty-one.   Traveling to another country.   Sailing across the ocean.   And yet this was still something he worried about.   Part of him briefly considered leaving the package buried in the suitcase.   Pretending he didn’t need it.   Pretending the problem didn’t exist.   But he knew better.   Traveling meant stress.   Stress often made things worse.   The last thing he wanted was to spend the trip worrying every night.   After a long moment, he quietly placed the package inside one of the drawers.   Out of sight.   Problem handled.   Mostly.   Ryder closed the drawer.   Then exhaled.   There.   Done.   The ship’s horn suddenly echoed through the vessel.   A deep, powerful sound that seemed to vibrate through the walls themselves.   Ryder hurried to the window.   The dock workers below were making final preparations.   The ship would be departing soon.   His heart began racing all over again.   Avalon.   He was actually going.   A knock suddenly interrupted his thoughts.   Three quick knocks.   Ryder smiled immediately.   Marshall.   He crossed the room and opened the door.   Sure enough, his friend stood in the hallway.   Already unpacked.   Already energized.   Already looking like he had something planned.   “Ready?”   “For what?”   Marshall looked genuinely shocked.   “For exploring.”   Ryder laughed.   “We just got here.”   “Exactly.”   Marshall spread his arms dramatically.   “We are aboard one of the largest cruise ships in the world.”   “Fair point.”   “There are restaurants.”   “Okay.”   “Pools.”   “Sure.”   “Observation decks.”   “Sounds nice.”   Marshall grabbed Ryder by the shoulder.   “And we’re going to see all of it.”   Ryder couldn’t help laughing.   Marshall’s excitement was contagious.   The nervousness he’d been carrying all morning began fading.   Replaced by curiosity.   Adventure.   Excitement.   Everything he’d hoped this trip would be.   As Ryder stepped into the hallway and locked his cabin door behind him, he looked both directions down the seemingly endless corridor.   The cruise had barely begun.   The ship hadn’t even left port yet.   And already he felt like he’d entered a different world.   Marshall smiled as they started walking.   Ryder thought his friend was simply excited about exploring.   In reality, Marshall was excited for an entirely different reason.   The pieces were moving into place.   The cruise.   Avalon.   The week ahead.   Whatever happened next, it was going to be memorable.   And for the first time since planning the entire trip, Marshall could finally see the adventure beginning to unfold.
    • I smiled and snuggled in your arms as i felt the kiss to my cheek i then try and kiss your cheek as i for a moment forget that amber was in the room with us. "Mommy i hungry snack please" i say it as i rest my head on your chest as amber watched and smiled seeing how her big cousin was doing better after what happend.
    • I follow behind you smiling. When your back is turned, I snatch a pink pacifier from the rack and slip it into my cart. I have to hustle to keep up with you, now that you’re suddenly in such a hurry to get to the check out. I stifle a small giggle as I see your cheeks flush red as you load the packages of Pampers, pull-ups, and Goodnites one by one onto the counter. The cashier gives a slightly odd glance at your purchases. I can’t help myself. ”Oh she’s just doing some nannying. The little one is in potty training.” The cashier shrugs and keeps scanning. I look at you with a wicked grin and wink.
