Star Trek vs. Star Wars

Are they mallards? :D

But seriously I agree.

I have a soft spot for Star Trek, especially TNG.

Never could get on with Star Wars, even as a kid I thought the original trilogy was a bit lame and hammy and boring.

Since Disney took over.. yeah... no contest anymore.  Trek wins.

And this from a guy who stood in line for I-dont-remember-how long to see the original Star Wars in 1977.  I just remember the line exited the theater and went down the block quite a ways.

Next flame war..... Original Trek vs. Next Generation vs. DS9 vs. Voyager...

I say DS9 wins.  Was the edgiest, had the best continuity, and in my opinion, the best characters.

I've never seen Star Wars and only saw a few episodes of Star Trek, but based on what I know about the 2 franchises I'd probably like Star Trek more. Though I'm honestly not a fan of either.

@spoonchicken@Apache Raccoon@Crinklz Kat@kasarberang

I grew up with Star Wars being a Fad of the late 70's, and I liked it, but as time goes on, and they have So many hands at Disney changing things around, or making newer story lines, it gets old really fast when you can't follow the story anymore.  The same can be said of any Disney or Abrahms Star Trek, its just "flipping" things around, as Kirk Says "Kahhhhhhhhn" In TWOK, and then JJ turns it round so Kahn says "Kirrrrrrrk" and other weirdness.

TREK for the Win:  I can watch the TAS, TOS, TNG, VOY, DS9, but NOT Enterprise:  just doesn't do it for me - LOVED how Spock and Mccoy would Bicker hehehehe :)

Or these two lines;

Picard (after lecturing Wes):  "I'm Gonna make this SIMPLE for you Mr. Crusher:  Either YOU come forward, and TELL Admiral Brand What Really Took Place or ***I*** WILL"

Wesley: "CAPTAIN?!"

Picard: "DISMISSED!"

Or:

Picard: [to Admiral Pressman]:  "I'm placing you under arrest for VIOLATION of the treaty of Algeron"

Pressman:  "That's ENOUGH:  I'm assuming Command of this Ship:  Mr. Worf: Escort the Captain to the Brig"

[Worf, with folded hands sits there, and then Riker Says: "I don't think anyone's coming to your defense this time, Admiral:  Captain, I will have to be placed under arrest as well....Admiral???" as he is lead to the brig]

Pressman: [To Picard] "I Have a LOT of friends at Starfleet Command, Captain"

Picard: [To Pressman] "You're Going to NEED them!"

hheehhe DON'T mess with Picard OR Riker, that could be a BIG Mistake ;)

There is only Star trek. The other is just filler.

@Nia

AGREED!!

The problem is, because Disney has BOTH franchises, they have diluted the original intent of the series'.  They keep adding more series such as "Discovery" "Picard" and others, and each time they do, all it does, is make a huge mess, because they are trying to make Trek "cool again" when it was cool from the start.  As @spoonchickenwill most likely agree, ALL of these "reboots" and attempts to "revitalize" a series that has been on, and in reruns since 1969 or so, and for SW, 1977, make you YEARN for the older series, or at least a TNG episode.

You are right: Star Trek and all of its offshoots began with the ORIGINAL series, and as time went on, Gene modernized it, and brought it to current for the time period.  Each time you "mess" with a GOOD series, you make people wonder what is going on.  Disney can HAVE Star Wars, because the one I remember as a kid DIED After the last movie.

TREK all the way:  But lets keep it real, and lets not keep making Trek series that suck even worse then a Vacuum in REVERSE:  Good series stand the test of time, because they are GOOD, NOT because Disney decides to reboot them, and change the actors, and change who says iconic words in a movie that has been around since 1976, 1977 or such:  making endless series of any show can KILL it:  Just like the Scooby-Doo Franchise:  I think that died 20 years ago hehehe

Wow talk about stirring up a hornets nest. ?   Sorry, I don't see the need to pick a side on this one.  I like them both.  I grew up watching Star Trek when it was still on  NBC in prime time.  I have watched every Star Trek series and have liked them all.  I was blown away by the special effects when Star Wars came out and have to enjoyed all the movies to a greater or lesser degree since.  If it wasn't for Star Wars there likely would not have been any Trek movies.  Here again some of the Trek movies are better than others.  So, in the end I am thankful that we have both to enjoy.

P.S.  Any thoughts on Doctor Who?

In star wars Han solo was frozen because he had to go and no bathroom nearby .

In Star Trek they can beam you a new diaper or beam your mess out making changing a snap !.

Yes I too was in the target age range for the original movies, and saw the original star wars as a birthday "treat" on my birthday .

The newer movies done by Lucas, I gave up after Jar Jar blinks.

The Disney ones haven't seen or wanted to see , Fan boy movies with no substance .

Disney doesn't own Star Trek.  That's CBS.

Babylon 5 is better than both.

The one thing it had going was that it had a good cohesive story line.   The actors are what saved that show (especially Andreas Katsulas), set builds and the digital effects were pretty poor even for the day.  Season 5 was an absolute atrocity too.  Crusade lasted 13 episodes.   That said....  executing "getting the hell out of here maneuver!"

What about other popular shows (Dr. Who already mentioned)?  Stargate SG-1.  10 years + 2 spinoffs (and it may get resurrected again).  Farscape.  The Expanse (which is still on-going).  Firefly.  Falling Skies.  Kill Joys.  Futurama!!!! (how many shows get cancelled twice and still come back?)  Red Dwarf - you smegheads!  Battlestar Galactica for frak sake! --- both the original and remake.  Going way way way back in time -- Space 1999 (was my favorite show back when it was new - I had all the toys).

Lots of opinions here, but fun.

Ive been a trekker for a long time, the stories were always well written and even relevant for the time.

Captain Kirk and Picard are great characters and there’s only one Spock . Live long and prosper ?

Star Wars is ok but it is hard to follow after those first early movies but good entertainment

No need to choose.  I like them both.  Sure the latest Star Wars trilogy was kinda dry IMO and I hate how they handled Luke Skywalker but The Mandalorian is fun and some of the upcoming series look great.

I thought the latest Star Trek movies diverged quite a bit from the ideals that Trek introduced but I still enjoyed them.  Lower Decks is a lot of fun and Discovery got quite good in season 3.  I'm really looking forward to Strange New Worlds as I'm a big fan of Anson Mount from his Hell on Wheels days.

Now The Expanse is just next level.  Such a good series and I'm making my way through the books now.  I'm hoping that there might be a movie in there somewhere but we'll see.

original star wars trilogy over prequels and the sequels are just terrible. luckily they've (seemingly) been deemed non-canonical set in an alternate star wars universe.

star trek OS over next-gen, not familiar enough to rank the others (heard lousy about the newest series, though)

....but Picard over Kirk lol

Wholeheartedly agree.  The Expanse is excellent.  Check this one out on Prime.

As a long time nerd and openly proud geek my whole life I can say I love both and never understood this argument. Star Trek is great for its technical plausibility and well written story lines and arcs. Star Wars is great for the exact opposite reasons, it is absurd immersion sci-fi with an ever expanding universe that is so well thought out that minor characters that don’t have any lines have back stories. In short, Star Trek is quite possibly, a probable glimpse of the future and Star Wars is a great escape from the present.

Trek for me, all day long.

I loved the original star wars, the later stuff was kinda meh. Rogue One was great though.

As for favourite Trek, DS9 for me. Slow start but when end of Season 3 hit and the Dominion arrived, was very good stuff.

For some of us who grew up in the 80's, attending a Star Wars movie was almost a religious experience. I was too young to see the original Star Wars or Empire Strikes Back in the theatres, but when Return Of The Jedi came out, it was an epic event. This was back when VHS access to movies was in its infancy, and you couldn't summon movies from the ether at will, you had to wait for them to come on TV. Eventually rentals became an option. So nothing competes with Star Wars in terms of significance - it was burned into my psyche when I was at a tender age (much as diapers were!).

That said, my enthusiasm was dimmed considerably by the prequels. Meanwhile, I fell in love with watching TNG on TV. So, it is possible to love both, but, my love for them is separate and different, almost like my love for dogs versus my love for pizza.

You can't knock the Leia cosplay :)

I  was 11 when Star Wars came out, it blew my mind, so I have that to thank for the love of sci-fi and fantasy I think

and Grease for my love of spandex hehe

I was a bit pissed at SyFy (and why did they have to change from Sci Fi ?? it's just stupid!) for cancelling it.. and I had cancelled my Amazon prime just before that move. ?  But... not resubscribing.  I'll wait for the season 5 bluray release.   SyFy's cancelled a lot of good shows "because they're too expensive".  They've fallen into the reality TV suck-hole as well.  And some people still wonder why broadcast/cable TV viewership is declining.  :34_EmoticonsHDcom:

Meanwhile --- The Orville!  Loved the show, Fox showed their idiocy yet again.  But another show that moved to a streaming platform (Hulu) to which I will not subscribe  (I'd have to be paying well over $100/mo just to watch 1 or 2 shows on each and every friggin platform -- NO THANKS!).  And now its future is completely uncertain.

Both for me, but I have different ones of each I like.  I am a Captain Kirk fan as I was a 9 year old kid when the original came out.  Sadly, when I think of Patrick Stewart the first thing that comes to my mind is "A Christmas Carol", 1999 TNT production where he played Scrooge.  Granted, the original Star Trek is hokey by today's standards as far as special effects and smacking of 1960's culture, but it was cutting edge back then, especially for a one hour weekly TV show.

Star Wars.  When episode 4 came out in 1977 we were just blown away from the minute the introduction started rolling across the screen.  Then when the ships came by a moment later firing the blasters, WOW!  Such special effects had never been seen before!  The plots of episodes 4, 5 and 6 were great as well, including some humor introduced by C3P0 and R2-D2 as well as the interaction between Han Solo and Princess Leia.  I also very much enjoyed the radio serial of all 3 that came out around that time, as well as the first Star Wars book, both of which gave a lot more backround information that was not in episode 4, kind of answering some questions you had after watching episode 4.

Episode 1, 2 and 3 were OK as well, again picking up the original history and story line up to episode 4.  I enjoyed all of them.  Now, let's get to episode 7, the force awakens.  Right from the start the premise was a joke that sounded like a grade C tired old plot.  Luke Skywalker is missing and we have to find him.  Give me a break!  Seriously?  It served the purpose of introducing a new line of characters necessary to continue the story line.  Kylo Ren was not menacing, more of a Darth Vader wanna be.  BB8 was a clown and did not compare in coolness and personality to R2-D2.

Episode 8.  The best thing about that was Kylo Ren getting rid of that stupid mask and becoming a real villain you could be proud of.  Luke Skywalker, the last of the Jedi Knights turning his back on the force, the one thing he dedicated his life to?  Sad, very sad!  Even in episode 4 when Obiwan became a hermit, he was just biding his time and he never turned his back on the force!  A casino?  Really?  I admit the end was interesting when Luke projected a hologram of himself as a trim, neat looking Jedi dressed in black with a beard going up against Kylo Ren, but it wasn't real, just a hologram.  Remember at the end of episode 8 there were just a hand full of rebels left?  Keep that in mind for episode 9.

Episode 9.  Better.  Holograms of Luke, Han Solo Leia and it appears that Luke suddenly regained his devotion to the force.  The plot was better as well as the excitement and special effects.  One thing that ruined it was the ending, but the writers were trapped had to end the series on a positive, if unbelievable note.  Remember at the end of episode 8 the rebels were all but totally wiped out?  Where, then, did this huge force of rebels and ships suddenly come from to wipe out the empire at the end of the movie?  Personally, I liked episodes 1 through 6 but thought the last 3 official Star Wars movies were hurriedly contrived with more thought to making money and finishing the series and little thought to developing a plot.  I would have been happy with a good plot, let alone an excellent plot like episodes 4, 5 and 6.  I'm not sure I could call episode 7 mediocre and episode 8 was down right terrible!  Basically movies to satisfy the hunger of Star Wars fans who hadn't seen a new movie since 2005.

Star Trek movies.  I'm not talking about the ones in the 1980's with the original cast.  I'm talking about the 3 most recent ones with Chris Pine as Captain Kirk.  Usually you don't think redoing a show or movie with different actors playing the cast would work when you are so set on the originals, but in this case it worked!  Probably one reason was the newer movies showed the characters younger, when they were just starting out in Star Fleet as opposed to the TV show when they were older and had established themselves.  The other thing was the new actors were faithful to the mannerisms and personality traits of the original characters, although Spock and Uhura having a thing for each other was a twist for sure.  I think the last 3 Star Trek movies were not so much about the special effects but had well developed plots as well.  Special effects are cool to watch, but without a decent plot they are just that - special effects.
