Sites of interest in USA and Canada

Recommended Posts

Ok, so a large portion of people here are from North America. So what i was wondering is:

What State are you from? And if I visited it, what would you recommend I see?

Could be a natural feature, a man made feature, something wacky but interesting.

And just because someone from your state has posted, doesnt mean you havent got anything to add. Very famous stuff is cool too, but what about lesser known things, little gems, things that make your state shine?

P.s. no bloody arguments, one persons opinion is not always the same as the next guy, but its valid all the same.

Play ball!!

Well, let me start it off ? I'm in Ontario, Canada and Ottawa to be specific. Definitely recommend the Parliament buildings for one of the more traditional sites. Upper Canada Village or Fort Henry for something historical. Saunder's Farm if you like haunted sites. La Nordic Spa for a fantastic relaxing day. Calypso for some fun in the water. Caverns Lafleche for ziplining.

Just to name a few don't miss things ?

San Francisco ( #1 Int'l tourist destination / #2 domestic )

Basically everywhere except the bad neighborhoods

watch out for poo, pee, used needles , used condoms and homeless people everywhere

also been a recent spike in anti-tourist crime and auto burgarly

be careful

on second thought...go to DisneyLand instead...

Im in the California area, lots of natural things to see. The mountains and lakes around here are some of the best sights in the US. Bit of a warning though: CA has gas prices of $5 a gallon right now. Its getting close to UK gas prices right now.

I've lived here in Kalifornistan all my life, and I am considering leaving, much of what spoon chicken posted, and it is true, stay the hell away from San Francisco......Los Angeles isn't much better....for the "major cities".

on the plus side, there are wonderful natural sites around!! It is one of the few states you can go skiing in the morning, drive 2-ish hours and go surfing, then pop out and have dinner in the desert, and watch the sunset..

One of the great wonders is the Redwood forest ( if it is still standing after all the fires this year). You can see 1000 year old trees, that are H*U*G*E, and wonderful!!! ?? that don't grow anywhere else.

The coastline is a nice drive along many parts, beaches would be nicer if the homeless bums were'nt trying to take them over?? , but the coastal drive is nice. Lots of quaint towns etc. As spoonchicken said, down south towards Orance County and San Diego might be better, and safer. Most of the major amusement parks are there, Knotts Berry farm, Disneyland, Sea World SanDiego, Legoland....and some other stuff if you look around.

Politicians have done a bang up job in turning this State into a royal Sh*thole, but it still has plenty of natural beauty and interesting places to visit. Just stay out if the major cities!!!! This includes Hollywood!!! There us truly N*O*T*H*I*N*G to see there except a bunch of wierdos, wanna bees, bums drunks, homeless.....it's a dirty, tacky run down has-been town that should have closed up shop 50 years ago!!!!

Traffic us hellacious, people are rude ( Los Angeles was voted 2nd rudest city in the country, right behind New York......no surprise) prices are insanely high for most everything.....but if you must, then stick to National Parks, and the Southern part of the State....... And good luck on your visit.

Thanks guys for your posts so far... some interesting insight.

For someone who has only been over there a few times and just had a couple of night stops down the east coast its very interesting. We have a smithsonian channel here and they do runs of 'arial america' and that throws up some interesting history and points of interest.

Zip lining in caves? Sounds like quite a rush snugglebear :)

i hear what your saying about Cali and the state of the place, its been dipicted in films and Tv for years :(

valentinesstuff, are they the mounds that include a snake shaped one?

I think the snake shaped one is in Ohio. These are just big manmade hills.

Michigan.  Lots to see in Detroit but be careful of the crime.  Go to Flint and Benton Harbor and see the lead pipes and tainted water!  There are many casinos throughout the state but I would have to say the main attraction would be Mackinac Island and the Mackinac Bridge that spans the two peninsulas.  There is camping and some caves and also the beaches along the lakes.  We are the Great Lake State.

Seattle,Wa-Places to see/visit

1) Pike Place Market, aside from some street performers there are a lot of curio shops there.

2) The Space Needle - Its just really cool, recently upgraded with glass floors (Haven't been up since the remodel) so worth a trip up.

3) Any of our major sport arenas, sadly the once popular "Kingdome" has been gone for years, but its sister building the "Tacoma Dome" is still around.

4) Gasworks Park (Ok, this should be on top, but its a very unique place)

5) Woodland Park Zoo - If you're into the animal thing

6) Seattle Aquarium - Assuming you don't live near the water, they also have an Imax theater.

Hmm..... Maryland.... Well, Inner Harbor in Bal'more... along with Fort McHenry.  B&O Railroad museum a few blocks away (never been yet I'm a train fanatic... shame on me).  There's "the bay" of course if you're into boating/fishing.  Great Falls park -- it's on both sides of the river, so it also counts for Virginia too. B&O canal park runs right through it too.

Pennsylvania (where I used to live) ... can write pages.  Throw a dart at some location and there's likely to be something of interest to see there.   No joke!

DC (where I used to work)...   Well, what hasn't everybody already seen on TV...  It's better when seen on TV.  Trust me.

-----

Now, as far as sight seeing, this is one of the things I liked about participating in the HotRod Power Tour (the world's biggest road trip!).  They deliberately take you through small towns via secondary/tertiary highways between city stops.  Not only are there thousands of cool cars participating in the tour, you get to see cool stuff along the way too.  Some pictures from my HRPT travels (from multiple years) -- the GTO is a Kindig build, for those that watch "Bitchin Rides".

I'm a fan of St.Louis but we have issues with crime in the downtown area. It's not safe by any means and if you happen to park in a location that isn't guarded you may have your windows broken out. If you do come leave your stuff in the hotel or home. We have a lot of free attractions here tho from the STL Zoo and our Science Center. Also some cheaper attractions like The Magic House and City Museum.

Gasworks Park is an old industrial site, with the surrounding area converted into a park. Many of Seattle's Live Music events as well as other things take place there as they have an awful lot of space and of course it makes a nice backdrop for performers.

@DailyDi

In Vermont, we are known for our maple syrup, or apples, and our homemade gifts and crafts. We are also known for the Vermont teddy bear company, we are bears can be made via the build a Bear workshop‘s.  I once told @Evelyn Dellcerro, @Transfusionelle, and @Emily Ruby Rose That if I had a picture of each one of them, and a bunch of money, that I would probably make one that matches that may exactly including the glasses if necessary, and then send them back down to them so they could have a copy of them selves in bear forms. I think it would be cute to do that.

We also known for our restaurants in our tourism industry: as well as our ski areas and our fall foliage. One of the places that I like to go is to the Bragg Farm and East Montpelier where you can get The best damn Creemees (or as you Southerners call it soft serve) that I have ever had. Of course the Bragg Farm does Maple ones, so if you come up here to the GREEN MOUNTAIN state you will be treated to something that is very succulent and something you will never forget.

I am not sure how many of you remember that Ben & Jerry’s ice cream (now Unileaver) originated in a garage here in the state of Vermont. There are so many good flavors of Ben & Jerry’s that I could go on for hours and let you know of how wonderful they are. I can tell you from experience, that I enjoy every trip I make to the ben and Jerry’s factory in Waterberry Vermont, or two places where you can see all of the flavors of the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream they offer. Once summer in 1990, I was lucky enough to partake in an independence project for people with disabilities.  During the time I was there, I was able to partake in a few flavors of Ben & Jerry’s: my favorite was chocolate chip cookie dough: if you like cookies, and you were eating the dough before the cookies were made or you were licking the bowl or you were licking the spoon, you probably know what that is like. That summer we went there once, and I remember it being about 90°: I wanted an ice cream so I decided that I would take my favorite chocolate chip cookie dough, and eat that to cool off.

unfortunately my stomach disagreed with that decision, and I ended up getting sick because of it being overly too sweet and also very hot. So instead of eating a bunch of ice cream I drank a bunch of lemonade and let me tell you I felt like I was letting Niagara Falls loose when I got back to my dorm room at the college. There are many times that I see programs about Vermont history, or I see several different places that are unique to Vermont: you may want to indulge yourself in looking at all of the covered bridges within this state.  During the last two summers my parents have gone all over the place all over the state, and also to New York State, MAINE, and other places.  One thing to do is or one thing that they have done in the past is: they have a collection of different things that they get as they travel around. What they do is they will start for example at the local Harley Davidson dealership here, and they will go to each Harley Davidson in the state. As they continue their travels, they check off each Harley Davidson that they pass or they go in and look at. I believe they even went so far as the southern Florida area, but I don’t believe they’ve gone every place yet. That is one game that my parents play as they travel throughout the state or as they travel through other states.

as I have stated before: Stowe, VT Is a nice place to visit and has a lot of things for you to engage in and things for you to look at. Being that we are in the far foliage and pretty soon the ski season, people flock here to be able to get away from the big cities, and be able to enjoy what it is like to be in the Northeast. We boast several scary is, and we dare say that we could probably give you a run for your money as far as the fun and the food that you would be able to eat: for example, Southerners probably do not know what a “fluffernutter” is:  this is a sandwich where they take peanut butter and marshmallow cream fluff, and put that on a piece of bread and slide it together. Someone in the Northeast in Massachusetts I believe, came up with that idea and that is his New England as New England clam chowder or Maine lobster.

Not sure what else remind offers as far as attractions, but we do offer the best granite in the world I believe. We have the gray granite, if you go to Hope Cemetery, you will see a lot of the monuments that are artisans have made. You will also find that in Randolph, you have the veterans memorial cemetery, where are veterans are buried when they wish to be buried there. My stepfather will not be buried there, even though he is a veteran, but he will be buried next to us when he passes, because my father gave up his plot so that I could be buried with them and my brother. You’ll find a lot of interesting and unique things here, and I invite anyone to make the trip up here if and when they can, because they will not be sorry! I may be biased in my opinion, but I have lived here all of my life and I can’t think of a better place to live then in the GREEN MOUNTAIN state, with the capital of MONTPELIER, established in 1791.

I have traveled to several states, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Massachusetts, North and South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, New York City (enroute to Florida) and maybe a few others. I think I may have even been in Mikey‘s backyard a couple times because I was in northern Florida on the border so that you could drive from Thomasville Georgia into Tallahassee Florida on Thomasville Road. Each time that I’ve gone there I have become more enamored with the culture and the way things work down there in the south, versus the way things work in the north. I have even been “accused of having“ a “Northern accent” even though I have lived in Vermont all my life and that is the way I talk. If you go to Massachusetts, you will notice that there are people who have that accent, but that is the way they talk as well, so I don’t consider myself to have an accent, but I can yell Yeehaw pretty loud, or ask y’all if “you want to go down to the mall!”. ?????

There are times however, that I get bored here in Vermont, because I don’t have the ability to get out as much as I used to, or go as many places are used to go, as I age, it gets harder to do that, so I don’t have the ability to get outside as much nor do I want to be outside in the cold. Sometimes I wonder, if I should join Mikey down there in Alabama, or North Florida, or if I’m a fool because I’ll probably get eaten by a alligator or a crocodile! That has been known to happen, and when I was in Disneyland in 2016 there was a report of some poor kid who got eaten by one of those damn things because you never should go into the water if you cannot see the bottom of what you were getting into.

I have definitely learned that in the south, things are done differently, and the way the people talk act and behave are different. I’ve also learned that respect is something that you always show anyone regardless of where you were brought up, and you wouldn’t dare disrespect someone down there because you’ll probably be taken behind the woodshed And whipped. I’ve even heard of my friend, who I saw at least twice, getting the paddle at school for being disobedient and disrespectful, and in the state of Florida you can do that provided that your parent has signed some sort of document stating that it is OK to discipline that way. When I talk to my friend and his mother I have come to the realization that I would not want to get in trouble down there because I probably wouldn’t be able to sit down for two months!

someday, I will return to the south as a vacation from the north, but I probably wouldn’t move there until unless my family was gone from the Northeast. I’m not sure exactly if I would do that, but I have been contemplating it for a few years, and the last time my friend was here he was pushing so hard, telling me that I should move to Florida or move south, when he was telling me that he was home sick and wanted to come home to Vermont. He has finally made the decision to stay in New Hampshire, because he has excepted his fate and knows that he needs to be where he is, and knows that there are people that love him and want to take care of him and make sure that he is well taken care of. I told him a few times I said “if you want me to move south, and you’re pushing me very hard to do that, now you know how I feel when I tell you that you are in a better position there in New Hampshire than I am here in Vermont“  Once you are a northerner I guess you always are a northerner and once you are a southerner you always will be a southerner, but I am happy to report that the next time I go to Florida, or anytime I go south, I will feel more at home in Mike’s backyard: when you had the friends you had down there and the experiences that you always will carry with you, you form friendships and bonds that you will never lose, even if you don’t see them ever again.

Vermont awaits you!

Brian

Wow thanks to all of you accepting my challenge, there is so much info coming out. Really does help paint how diverse a land you have.

I am surprised no one has mentioned giant roadside objects? Is that still a thing?

In some places.  This is in Collinsville IL (near St. Louis).  "The Worlds Largest Catsup Bottle".  It's actually a water tower.

BTW.... I actually made it into Hot Rod magazine back in 2013.   I knew the photo car was not far ahead of me... and sure enough, there I am!  (the red one)

Well, I saw this on TV -- never been there.   Giant Canadian nickle in Sudbury Ontario.  Sudbury is home to a substantial nickle mining industry.
