TellMeAStory
'60s baby here. Definitely cloth. I remember looking at them when I was very young and wondering what they would feel like at the time. Probably plastic panties as well. They would've been cheaper. Link to comment
diperhiker
Definitely white cotton cloth with white panties. 'Was a '60s baby too. Link to comment
Babygeebee
Yup. Same here too. Cloth diapers and plastic pants. I remember the safety pins were blue. Link to comment
adhb
I'm very much an old geezer. I grew up in the 40's and 50's. So I wore cloth diapers as a baby and toddler. I also wore real rubber pants that came in a card board tube at first before plastic pants arrived on the scene. Link to comment

I only have pink, and the yellow in my collection. Link to comment
adhb
It's been over 70 years since I wore rubber pants that came in a cardboard tube. So my memory is a bit hazy. However, I think that the tubes looked approximately like your picture. 1 Link to comment
hlcl
@olympusis correct. The disposable diapers of that era were thick, bulky and crinkly. There was no doubt about what someone was wearing. If they couldn't see the bulk and outline of the diaper under clothes they could hear the crinkle. Also due to the type of padding that was used you could feel when you were wet. 3 Link to comment

It sounds like the '70s version of Pampers diapers had everything that us Littles would want in a baby diaper. Thick, bulky, absorbent, and crinkly with every move. Sounds like the perfect diaper to me. I wonder if they also had that baby diaper smell that we love so much. If they did, then that would truly be the perfect diaper. 1 Link to comment

Actually they weren't all that absorbent. SAP didn't come into use iuntil the '70s. The earlier diapers just used "fluff" which only holds about 11 times its weight. And any squeezing just made the liquid come out. Link to comment
Pelusban
As a late response to the topic, I'm trying to remember my own experience. Unfortunately I don't remember my diapered days - I was out of diapers before two and half, so my mom was very proud, it was above the norm - but later during the elementary school and middle school, as a latent diaper lover, I secretly noticed a lot of things. It was the 70's. In the soviet block disposable diapers weren't a thing until the middle of 80's, so my mom just like the others, packed me in cloth diapers and plastic pants. They used a characteristic gauze-like white cotton type "Tetra", which mainly produced in Czechoslovakia and used as cca. 27x27" (70x70 cm) flat sheets. It is still produced and can be purchased today. They used one triangle folded and one or more rectangle folded above it. Maybe some thick cloth stuffers too. I don't remember any diaper pins, but I know there was a ribbon to tie around the diaper, like a belt. For newborns, under the swaddle they covered the diaper with a flat, rectangular PVC sheet - I remember its look and feel because afterwards I used mine - a light blue one - as a protecting tablecloth for arts and crafts classes in the elementary school. It was a surprisingly good material. For bigger children they used snap-on PVC pants and the pull-on type for toddlers. Its common Hungarian name was "gumibugyi" (i.e. rubber panty) but on the packages they used more euphemistic names like "Infant PVC pants with plastic snaps". The plastic material for these were made by the local chemical industry (TVK, Palma) under brand names like "Palma", "Csöpi" and "Ágnes". The color was mostly white, sometimes pink. The plastic snaps were horrible, but I still have strong nostalgic feelings about them. As I know from a photo of one of my cousins, there were also plastic pants with metal snaps and printed grandma-style roses on the PVC. It almost looked like a porcelain pattern on the shiny, white material. But maybe that was imported from somewhere. The plastic pants were available until the end of the 80's, just slightly improved. As I remember, later there were snap-on versions with a woven, colorful outer layer above the white PVC. In the middle of 80's then they started to sell the disposable Libero brand (from Sweden?), first as stuffers with a separately sold cheap tie-on plastic cover. I think it wasn't even PVC. Then in the 90's all other disposables appeared with their full glory. The Z-fold Pampers style diapers practically left out from the story. Link to comment
Little BabyDoll Christine
How about that, Even in Magyar they were called "rubber panties". There must be some jokes in here about "Gerberov" and "Playteksky". No doubt the Russians claimed to have invented them. I do not know if they coud get away with that, though. When he came over to the US, Bela Blasko: aka Bela Lugosi did not say "I von to change your diapers" Actually I have a bit of an affinity towards Hungary. In '63 I had a history instructor named Janos Decsy who took part in the '56 uprising Link to comment
Pelusban
Yes, Russians claimed they invented everything, but as you know East-Germany was also part of the block and I'm pretty sure all rubber and plastic pants technology came from the Germans here. However, the whole block copied everything from the west shamelessly so maybe our "own" plastic pants brands were exact copies of something else. Link to comment
kobie_baby
As I was born in the 60's it would have been cloth. Link to comment
tuffy
I was born in '58 and wore gauze flat diapers. Link to comment
Little Matt
Started out in cloth and then my parents switched to Pampers once they got good/cheap/common enough for regular use at the end of the 70s. Link to comment
jonnyabdl
I don't know what diapers my mom put on me as a baby but after wetting the bed at the sitters when I was 8 or 9 she put me in pampers when ever I came to stay with her. My mom would drop me off in he mourning and wouldn't even be pulled out of the drive way before the sitter was telling me to get undressed so she could diaper me. I would stay diapered all day until about 5 o'clock when she would say your mom will be here soon lets get you cleaned up and dressed. Link to comment
