pottytraining Eddie's Potty Training Journal_Final Chapter_June 13, 2025
hlcl replied to spark's topic in Completed Stories
Maybe I would give him a break from potty training during the school year. School can be stressful and demanding so can potty training. During the school year I would consider giving him a break from potty training and have him wear diapers. We could work on potty training during the summer and school breaks. It might take longer but it would be less stressful. He could focus on one thing at a time, either school or potty training. Sometimes when someone is potty training and they are wearing pull ups and using the potty during the day they might put up a fuss when it is time to get their diaper on for bed. I would tell them that when they get more practice at using the potty they can wear pull ups to bed.- 335 replies

I am enjoying the story. In this case I would return someone to diapers and start potty training all over again. First I would start with daytime training and when he mastered that I would start nighttime training.- 335 replies

@diapered hubbyYour wife might have switched you from disposable diapers to cloth diapers with snap on plastic pants at night because they are less likely to leak. I like to use disposable diapers on someone during the day because they are more convenient to change if someone is away from home. Cloth diapers and plastic pants might be too bulky and noticeable under clothes for daytime use

You can try disposable training pants or pull ups. Plastic pants can be worn for extra protection. I would get quality products from somewhere like Northshore, not poor quality drug store products. @Nancy2how does he feel about wearing diapers during the day?

@JunkyardDog1It's a big deal the first time you change your diaper in public. You feel like others can hear the tapes rip and the diaper crinkle as you remove the wet diaper and put the dry one on. It's important to always have a dry diaper with you because you never know when you will wet and need to change. It was a good idea to change your diaper before meeting the gentleman. A leak will let others know that you are wearing diapers.

@SpiderBabyIt sounds like the Goodnites were too small. A larger size would have been more comfortable and less likely to leak. I would use Goodnites on someone who needs protection but doesn't want to wear diapers. Plastic pants can be worn for extra protection. The advantages of Goodnites are they allow the person to use the bathroom and they can change themselves in case of an accident. I agree that the blue medical diapers are awful. They are loud and crinkly. They announce to everyone around you that you are wearing a diaper. They also are not very absorbent and tend to leak. A leak will also give you away. I would use these diapers on someone around the house as more of a just in case diaper to keep clothes and furniture dry. I would give the person frequent diaper checks and changes to prevent leaks

This is definitely the season for oops. A crowded mall or holiday event is not a good place to have an accident. As the holiday season approaches I would have someone practice holding it and possibly going without diapers sometimes. I would have them do a potty training review to improve their skills if they have been wearing diapers a lot. At the event I would have them wear a pull up and maybe add plastic pants for extra protection. Frequent bathroom breaks should help to keep them dry. I would bring extra pull ups in case of an accident as well as diapers in case try to make it to the bathroom is too stressful.

Why does the UK keep their kids in diapers longer than those in the US?

@PampertimmyYour mother was wise to return you to diapers at age 3 when you weren't ready for potty training. If I was trying to potty train someone and they were resisting I would return them to diapers and try again in a few months. I would use both diapers and pull ups on someone during the training process so that they wouldn't have to suddenly give up diapers. I would tell someone that nighttime dryness comes after daytime dryness, sometimes much later so they might need diapers at nighttime and naptime even though they were out of daytime diapers. -
Who wore diapers long-term (4+) as a kid?
hlcl replied to Silly Willy Toddler Boy's topic in [DD] Surveys
@diaperuser Did the kids who weren't potty trained mind being potty trained when they were in school? Did other kids tease them? If I was the teacher I would have the kids wear diapers on the way to school in case they have an accident. Once they get to school I would put a pull up on them so they can work on potty training. When it is time to go home I would put a diaper on them so they won't have to worry about having an accident on the way home. By putting a diaper on them for the ride home it gives them a break from the stress of potty training. Sometimes parents don't go right home after picking up the kids from school. A diaper prevents accidents on the way home. When the kids get more practice at making it to the potty they can wear pull ups on the way to and from school. During the school day kids will need potty breaks and diaper/pants checks and changes. Kids will have fewer accidents as they get practice at making it to the potty. -
@PampertimmyIn order for someone to be potty trained they have to be physically, mentally and emotionally ready to give up diapers. The first sign that someone is ready for potty training is they know when they are wet and they don't want to wear a wet diaper. Sometimes it is hard to tell when you are wet with today's disposable diapers. They need to be able to commit to the training process which takes time.

@tryingtocope it was nice to be able to wear diapers as an older kid. Potty training is stressful. It might be better to keep someone in diapers and delay potty training until things slow down and the person can concentrate on training -
The crinkle of a plastic backed disposable diaper can be comforting and reassuring.
-
@willnotwillthat is a very common thing to have happen with someone who wears diapers and underwear. At least it didn't happen in public. @PampertimmyPampertimmy Sometimes when someone is in diapers for a while they don't pay attention to their body's signs that they need to pee so they will have an accident. They just wet without thinking about it. If they want to go without a diaper I would recommend a review of potty training to brush up on their skills
-
@jonnyabdl Did you mind wearing diapers because you were older? It's understandable why you had an accident. Sometimes when there is stress or a change to their routine someone will have an accident. The Pampers you wore were probably the crinkly plastic backed ones. When you needed to pee did you wet your diaper or did you ask to have your diaper taken off so you could use the potty? When the sitter took you to the store to buy diapers, what kind did you get? If I was taking someone to the store to buy diapers I would diaper them instead of putting big boy pants on them because an accident in public is more embarrassing than an accident at home.

@Toddler PampersYour mommy chose wisely. The old school Pampers will keep you dry and comfortable.
-
@Toddler PampersWith the older plastic backed disposable diapers there was no doubt about what someone was wearing. If you couldn't hear the crinkle you could see the bulk and outline of the diaper under clothes. There is something comforting and reassuring about the crinkle of a plastic backed disposable diaper.

Why does the UK keep their kids in diapers longer than those in the US?
hlcl replied to SpiderBaby's topic in Scoop The Poop
It seems like kids are wearing diapers at a later age and potty training later in general. Today's disposable diapers are so good often kids doesn't know when they are wet. Disposable diapers are convenient and easy to change unlike cloth diapers so there is no rush to train someone. Modern disposable diapers are pretty quiet and virtually unnoticeable under clothes. With the older plastic backed disposable diapers there was no doubt about what someone was wearing. If you couldn't hear the crinkle you could see the bulk and outline of the diaper under clothes. So there is no embarrassment about being older and still in diapers nowadays. If someone was school age and not potty trained I wouldn't try to train them during the school year. School is stressful and so is potty training. I would work on potty training during the summer when we could focus on potty training and not worry about the stress of school too. I would teach them how to tell when they are wet. The easiest and quickest way to do this is to look at the wetness indicator on their diaper. I would tell them that when the wetness indicator changes color from yellow to blue they are wet. I would also teach them to tell if they were wet by the way the diaper looks and feels. I would tell them that nighttime dryness comes after daytime dryness. Sometimes much later so they might need diapers at nighttime and naptime even though they are out of daytime diapers. -
So sorry for your loss. Sending love and hugs.

@PuraVidaDipIt's much better to wear diapers out of fun rather than necessity. It's possible to retrain yourself. I would continue with the pelvic floor therapy. Although it will take time, it's possible to regain control. I would buy some pull ups and wear them around the house. I would wear diapers at night and when you leave the house. As your retraining progresses, you can wear pull ups on short outings and then on longer and longer outings Nighttime dryness comes after daytime dryness, sometimes much later, so you might need to wear diapers during the night even after you are out of daytime diapers. The nighttime dryness comes with time. Accidents are part of the learning process so don't beat yourself up if you have an accident. Put on a dry pull up and keep trying. As your training progresses accidents will decrease. Let us know how you are doing

The pink are plastic backed and the white ones are cloth backed
-
@olympusis correct. The disposable diapers of that era were thick, bulky and crinkly. There was no doubt about what someone was wearing. If they couldn't see the bulk and outline of the diaper under clothes they could hear the crinkle. Also due to the type of padding that was used you could feel when you were wet.
-
Wetness indicators can be valuable if I am training or retraining someone. One of the first steps I use in the process is teaching someone how to tell when they are wet. Some people don't know when they are wet or they won't tell someone that they are wet so wetness indicators come in handy. If someone is embarrassed about being in diapers I will put pants over their diaper so people won't see the wetness indicator and know that they wet their diaper.

Plastic pants are versatile. They can be used over a disposable diaper as an extra measure of protection when a leak would be embarrassing or inconvenient. They can be used over training pants or pull ups for extra protection during the early stages of training or retraining when accidents are more likely.
