Wearing diapers to doctors appointments

Recommended Posts

I’m thinking about scheduling a doctors appointment for a check up and was curious who has worn a diaper to their appointments and how did you tell your doctor did you tell them when you made the appointment or did you wait till you got to the appointment? Was it embarrassing to tell your doctor? I’m thinking of wearing a diaper to my appointment whenever I go that is why I’m asking.

You should always inform your doctor of anything not already in your chart that can influence the lab draws that he/she orders.  Also, if you are going to be overnight in a hospital, take this up beforehand.  Hospital disposables do not have a good reputation, so what you want to find out is whether you can bring your own.

I wear 24/7. My doctors know. A few know that I wear them because I want to. That is because I didn't want my primary physician or my urologist to think I had a medical condition that needed treatment. I have not explained this to other doctors, because they have no need to know, nor would they think this is something they would treat. My doctors have been professional, and understanding.

I did have a funny experience at the urologist when I had prostate biopsies taken. After the procedure the nurse offered me a dinky little pull-on Depends. I told her I didn't need it, and she responded with an "Oh yes you do!".

I pulled out my ABU PeekABU and said, "No, I really don't."  😁

The urologist laughed and the nurse was a little surprised.  BTW, the biopsies were negative.

Been going to doctors diapered for more than 30 years , it doesn’t matter to all other doctors other than my urologist and colon rectal surgeon because the diaper area is under there control all doctors know I am incontinent as it’s in my medical records but that’s like knowing I had a hot dog with mustard for lunch , there’s nothing for them to Pay attention to because they don’t treat it ,I have specialist for that .

Hiii!

Yes I do, it became a necessity over the years with kidney/bladder and medications to keep everything working and a large order of habituation (pardon my spelling). The only time I became self conscious about it was when I Started wearing crinklz prints, but I got over that quick. Ultrasound techs love them. It is a conversation starter into the whole psychology of comfort, security, ect.. they also have seen me use pacifiers, oh God especially for MRIs I freak in the tunnel without it. (closterfobic much?)LOL

If you do, be up front about why you are wearing a diaper.  Let them know it is just your choice of underwear and you do not have any medical condition that would require you to need them.  You will never be able to fool a doctor with a medical excuse for incontinence or an actual need for diapers.  It is their field of expertise and they will want to run all kinds of tests, ultrasounds and do referrals to urologists, etc.  It is their job to find a cause and cure, period, and if you refuse to go along with the tests (which can be costly even with insurance), they will want to know why.  In their mind a 34 year old doesn't need diapers unless their is an underlying cause which could be a form of cancer, diabetes, nerve damage, etc., all of which are serious medical conditions.

If you decide to wear a diaper to your doctor appointment, bite the bullet and be upfront with the real reason you wear diapers.  In this day and age even doctors are most likely aware of AB/DL and should just accept your choice of underwear as long as it has nothing to do with your medical situations.  After all, there has to be a reason your thinking of wearing a diaper to your doctor appointment in the first place, probably for a bit of a thrill to be seen by your doctor and the nurses in a diaper.  Since you would be wearing not for any medical reasons, I personally wouldn't call ahead and say, "By the way, I'll be wearing diapers to my appointment.  No, I don't have any medical need for them, I just prefer to wear them as my underwear."  If it were me (and personally I would never wear a diaper to my doctor appointment myself), I'd wait for the doctor to notice and ask about it and if I was having bladder issues.  That would be when I would say, "No, I just prefer to wear a diaper as my underwear for personal reasons".  That should be the end of the discussion.

Incidentally, when I fell on the ice over a year ago and messed up my lower back and sciatic nerve, I saw 2 emergency room doctors, another one at a medical clinic and my own doctor all within a week's time because the pain was so bad.  They even gave me Morphine.  Each and every one of them asked me if I was "wetting or pooping myself", in those words.  Even a fall on the ice that can mess up your sciatic nerves can cause incontinence whether temporary or sometimes permanent if the nerve damage is that bad.  That's why doctor's want to know a cause and find a cure.

As many of you are aware, I am incontinent both ways in severely incontinent. As such, I wear diapers to every appointment that I go to. my doctor was the one who diagnosed me with a condition, and helped me deal with the fact that I was having problems with my incontinence, IBS and diverticulitis. As such, he is totally aware of my incontinence, and I was totally honest with him from the start. When you end up having accident after accident, or you end up having situation up and where you don't have any control of what is going on, it could be because of what you eat, it could be because of your current condition, it could be your stomach, or it could be a whole host of other environmental issues that cause you to feel poorly. Regardless, when you deal with incontinence, there are things that you as you are dealing with it. I have fully accepted my incontinence and my need for diapers, and I can tell you that my decision has been the best I've made because I don't have to deal with anymore stress or craziness. there are advantages to wearing diapers, And those cannot be forgotten, but you have to weigh the pros versus the cons of your decision.

As @rusty pins Said, I definitely would be open honest and upfront with your doctor. You should never ever lie to your doctor, because if you lie to your doctor about one thing, then it could be it could be harder and harder to treat you as you keep on going if you have to compound why after lie after lie. because your doctor is working for you, and because the idea of having your doctor around is to help you stay healthy, the best thing to do is be honest up front and straightforward with your doctor, and tell him what's going on. when I told him that I was having problems with incontinence, I told him that I've had cerebral palsy all my life, and that I've had incontinence on and off all through my life. unlike me, I told the doctor exactly what was going on, and I told him that I did not think that I would need to go to urologist or any of these other specialists to determine whether I have incontinence and a way to fix it. going to a urologist is not necessary because I have a edition that is neurological And I would assume that as I age things will not work as well as they used to, And I might lose control of certain functions. It is a foregone conclusion that if you have a disability such as mine, incontinence may end up showing its head and you might end up dealing with it. I've also dealt with a lot of stress and other things, and there are feelings that I've dealt with for a long time. because I have incontinence, and because I'm wearing diapers to solve that problem, it solves my problems that deal with the feelings and the urges that I've always had. I can't just turn them on and off, so I might as well deal with it straight on honest and forthright.

Rusty is also correct when he says that if you go to a doctor and you're not telling him or her what's going on, you may end up having to deal with going to a urologists are another specialist to see about incontinence or other issues. You do have the right to wear diapers if you wish, but I certainly wouldn't try to tell the doctor that you need them or try to do it for shock value. It is our responsibility to make sure that we're always telling the truth to our medical providers, because if you're not, and the doctor makes a determination based on a lie, that could put you at a medical risk common because he is not aware of something that you might be withholding from him.

Now that they know of my incontinence, it's no big deal. They would help me if I needed it, and that is a cool thing. I haven't had a problem at all, In fact all of my support team has been very very understanding and professional. They know that I cannot help the fact that things are going on, and I just told the doctor that with the idea that I'm not sure when it's gonna happen or why it's gonna happen, it's easier just to wear diapers for myself for my health and for my sanity my safety and other things. In my mind it is a lot easier to change a diaper than it is to have an accident that you have to clean up when you don't have one on.

Good Luck!

Brian

I agonized over this when I started wearing diapers 24/7 a few years ago, and eventually, I parted ways with the last of my boxer shorts, leaving me with no other wardrobe options except diapers, unless I wanted to go shopping for boxers, or go commando, which I didn't.

Out of an abundance of caution, I generally don't wear anything overtly ABDL, preferring either plain white diapers, or, I'll put on a pull-up moments before the appointment. I do my best to stay dry out of respect for everyone involved. So far, my experiences have worked out like this:

- Most of my appointments didn't involve in-trouser work, anyway, so it didn't matter what I had on under there.

- When they have wanted to get a look under the hood, I've been offered the opportunity to get into a gown, and at that point I took my diaper off and folded it up with my clothes.

- On the one occasion where I was unexpectedly asked to disrobe in front of a doctor (a specialist) and a resident, they had zero interest in the pull-up I had on - they tend to be very siloed. They weren't there to investigate anything related to my urinary tract, ergo, they simply ignored it.

- My long-term plan, once my current physician, who has been with me for about 35 years, retires, is to tell my new doctor that I wear diapers for OAB, that it's been investigated, I am not looking for new and exciting treatment options, I'm fine with it, next question, please. And, thereafter, to wear diapers openly to appointments. They're so busy up here (Canada) that they don't tend to go looking for more work, and, in any case, my doctor works for me, I don't work for him or her - it's entirely up to me if I want treatment for something or not. It might be different if I were trying to get them to sign off on having my diapers covered by insurance or something, but that is not the case. To me, it's as if I were asking them for permission to wear blue socks. This is not a medical issue.

Being an adult baby, Diaper dependent and  incontinent, all my doctors and nurses knows I am incontinent and I wear diapers. It's so normal for me with them that many times I have gone to my doctors in a diaper, t-shirt dress or a skirt and a Onesie on. They know I wear diapers and it's on my medical records as well. Many times when I am wearing ABDL diapers or Onesies, they often ask where I get them. I always try to go to my medical appointments in a clean dry diaper but if I can't, I always have my diaper bag with me just incase they need to do a diaper check or I need to do a diaper change and often Nurses will help me get change as well. The one good thing about working with my doctors and Nurses, they all know that I am an adult baby and they treat me like an adult baby and they know it helps me cope and deal with being incontinent.

@rusty pins yes the reason I am thinking of wearing a diaper to my doctors appointment is like you said to get a thrill by being seen by my doctor and nurses in a diaper. If I do decide to wear I will be honest and tell them it is my preferred underwear and I will do like you said and wait for the doctor to see it and let him or her know that a diaper is just my preferred underwear. Hopefully they understand and know about ab/dl people.

Like many others have stated, it's your hangup. Just do it. You'll find you were sweating bullets for nothing. They will not care about your choice of underwear.

Yeah it is my hang up. The only issue I’m having with wearing a diaper to the doctor is that the kind of diaper I normally wear is goodnites xl so I’m just nervous about what they might think if I do wear them. I’m thinking if I do wear a diaper I’m thinking of going and buying some depends brand diapers and wearing them so it’s not as embarrassing. From reading most of the comments on here it sounds like most people wear adult diapers or diapers like rearz or crinklz.

I've worn to the doctor often, mostly routine check ups where my pants stayed on. I did bring them up twice, once when I was told they saw something odd on an x-ray. I said that I was wearing a diaper, they said it wasn't that and showed me the x-ray. I explained why I have a giant wire in my torso. The other time was when a Urology PA asked what type of undies I normally wear. I told her, and she didn't even blink.

When you open up a can of worms, it takes a larger can to re-can them. So, why start and even take that chance? You are only adding more moving parts: i.e. Murphy bait

I have worn nappies to meetings with doctors and hospitals. I had a knee replaced and wore Tykables ‘cammies’ all the time. I had a nappy rash and was called into my doctor at very short notice, too short to change from my terry nappy I wear with plastic pants. She gave me a thorough examination and just told me to change often. I explained that I like terry nappies and she was very impressed even though they are quite childish (I think it appealed to her ‘green’ credentials). More recently I wore a Kiddos ‘let’s build’ to a hospital for a scan as I was above the waist but down my back. I forgot that I was wearing dungarees (my woodworking uniform) and had to strip down to my nappy. If I am asked I just say that life is too short for dull undies, and yes, I am incontinent. I like wearing more childish clothes and it offends no one, just make sure it is a clean nappy/diaper for the meeting.
