  1. Not to confuse our readers, but one's mind view of a product does not always equate to what is on the market and available for the public to find and purchase. The most common waterproof panties or DIAPER COVERS are either the Vinyl version commonly called plastic, or the PUL version, which is a Poly laminate covered outer cloth. Most of these products no longer separate and are typically long lasting. The difference is large, where the vinyl or plastic tends to harden when it ages, the PUL does not if laundered correctly(avoid the clothes dryer) It is also much quieter and does stretch a bit to hold the diaper under it in place better. The PUL will eventually wear out but the better products last longer as you would expect. There are several mentioned here, the Suprima and the Gary Active Wear
  2. The Gary Active Wear protective pants are both comfortable and very durable and are a great choice for a diaper cover that offers not only added protection, but also helps to hold a wet diaper in place and conceal some of the odor. These are not vinyl or rubber but the newer laminate style and are worth every penny if you ask me
  3. One other thought I should add, I know for a fact based on knowing nurses that have worked in nursing homes and with assisted living arrangements, that the common practice these days is to diaper almost all the patients that have mobility or mental problems as changing diapers on a regular basis is easier than being available to help these folks use the bathroom when they want to. Considering all the older folks that get into nursing or home care situations, probably puts this number at 75% or greater of our older generation.
  4. My urologist tells me that continence issues in men are becoming very common these days, especially those with prostrate issues and diabetes. Having said that, considering that is his specialty, it is no wonder that many he does see have those problems. Not sure how that charts with the general public, the point, it is more than older gals buying diapers these days, and the adult diaper business is booming from what I hear! That tells me that more folks are wetting the bed than most expect!!
  5. Welcome to the world of older age, along with a few other issues that will cause continence problems. I have been to a urologist for several decades now do to a family history of prostrate problems, and have been advised what to expect as I become older. It started with the day dribbles, or in some cases strong urges to go, and is now becoming bed wetting, so plan for some level of necessary protection, and be happy your problems are not the life-threatening things many others face these days.
  6. I recently had my wellness visit with my long time GP and we talked a bit about my continence level slipping and my awareness of that possibility based on what my urologist has been telling me. He now knows and it should be in my record that I am wetting at night now as well as dribbling during the day. Guess that makes me an official bedwetter??
  7. Last night I truly wet the bed as my protection level failed me, and I woke up in a wet spot. Had to get up, change my protection and deal with the wet spot . My wife will be on my case today about improving my overnight protection again, something we agreed to do as warranted, and I can't ignore the threat any longer. Pullups are no longer going to be acceptable, even with my active wear Gary pants, it's on to good taped on overnight briefs going forward!
  8. This method sounds an awful like the symptoms I have with OAB especially after I have my morning coffee. I have to be near a bathroom or I will get my pad wet in a hurry! Seems like only a little when I finally get to go but soon the urges start again, and off I go to the bathroom another time!!
  9. I agree whole heartily with old_PA as I threw out all my boxers and tighty whities decades ago. Initially it was because I had to wear support hose for my poor leg veins and the extra material in the fly area didn't work under these, but more recently when I lost a bunch of weight and stopped wearing the hose I still wear the panties for the reason mentioned above- they work far better to hold in the pads I need during the day.
  10. I may have mentioned in past postings that I have been advised on several occasions now by my urologist that my dribbles would turn into more than that in the not distant future, problems that were associated to my prostrate issues and my diabetes combined with my age and weight. Even as my weight has gone down over that last 18 mos, my diabetes is better controlled as well, the damage has been done and my continence will be impacted I was told, but I was handling it well it seemed as I was already using pads daily which would have to be improved on as conditions worsen, I was also told. Well, they have especially at night if I have a few beers as I did last evening at my daughter's house attending her end of summer party. It was very hot and the beer was cold and tasted good. After returning home, I did drink a fair bit more water to offset the impacts of the alcohol, but that made for a wet night for sure. I was using one of my thickest overnight pullups with a stuffer, but that was barely up to the task as when I got out of bed this morning to come downstairs, I emptied what was left in me and I started to leak down one of my legs past my Gary active wear waterproof pant, a close call for the bed! Lesson learned; pullups are no night time substitution for a good tabbed overnight brief!
  11. My GP doesn't do a prostrate exam as he knows that my urologist does at my yearly checkup. Yes, I have a history of prostrate issues, have had one procedure done to reduce the size of it as well, and am on meds to hopefully avoid the cancer that is common in this area. So YES, there is a yearly probing but it is for a reason.
  12. This morning as I was just rolling over starting to think about getting up and going to the bathroom, I realized that I had already started to go in my diaper, so there was no need to jump right out of bed and head down the hall for the toilet. While I was not totally awake yet, I did notice that my bladder was full and was planning to roll over soon and head for the bathroom as I had slept latter than usual as I had a big day yesterday, but was surprised to notice that the decision was already being made for me, a first I believe? I have been wearing diapers to bed now for about a year, and to my knowledge, this is the first time that I started wetting that I wasn't fully aware of starting the process, as in most cases during the night, I would wake needing to go, and would lie on my back and proceed to use my diaper when I didn't want to get out of bed for the toilet. Some nights, this would be a 2 or 3 event ordeal, but always with me in control. Not so much this morning, so I guess I am turning a corner. I have anticipated this at some stage I guess, based on my declining day time bladder control, and aware of what my urologist have been predicting, but as mentioned, it may have been the first night time uncontrolled void that I am aware of. I am glad that I have moved to some decent night time absorbency products a while back, as this was not just a dribble, but a full out wetting as once I noticed it, there was no stopping, and with what I was wearing, I had no concern of any leaks as I mentioned, I was "testing" this system on several occasions over the last few months, so was well prepared it seems. Am I concerned about this turn of events, not really as had plenty of time to prepare myself for it and did so.
  13. I should add to the content above, that when I looked into what was available for overnight protection, I spoke with a medical store associate and was told that the belted shields that I started with may not be adequate for the long term, and she was correct. My wife and I agreed that this was a good starting point for overnight given the use of the waterproof pant as well, but if they start to become overwhelmed, we will move to the tabbed brief that offers much more absorbance, that the store associate suggested initially. We are now there after about 6 mos. The only remaining issue is what level of diaper protection is needed. I am currently using a Tena Ultra which, for the price, should work very well for the foreseeable future.
  14. Steve Wet has it in a nutshell I would only add the obvious, as an adult "If you leak any amount of urine beyond your control you are incontinent." That was from a professional and is a short and to the point qualification!
  15. My wife understands my issues with wetting, based on the many years I have been going regularly to a Urologist, and his prognosis. He has told me that as I get older, my bladder control will weaken, as all the signs are there, but is happy that I have found ways to work with current issues. It started with the dribbles, causing me to use pads during the day which she helped pick out. I also have OAB, needing to go a lot especially in the morning after my meds and coffee. On several occasions, I have really tested out my day time pads, as they took care of more than dribbles on the way to a bathroom. When I wet the bed one night about a year ago, she agreed that I should wear "better" protection to bed and I started with belted guards as they were much better than the pads I wear in my underwear during the day. She also agreed that after I visited a medical store, and was told about PUL diaper covers, that they were a good choice for an added layer of overnight protection and to keep the protection I was using in place. She does actively participate in that she launders my "pants" every week, and exchanged that pair for the second that I got for backup. She had been asking on a regular basis how my belted guards are doing and I have told her that they are OK but I have had a couple of wet occasions where they were at their limit, and it is probably time that I improve from these to the tab briefs that the medical store lady predicted I would need. I have started to use these now in between nights as I use up all the belted guards that I have on the shelf and the assortment of briefs that I have is being tested now and wife will probably be asking about that soon as well and I will not deceive her. What she does not know is that some nights I simply lay in bed and use my protection rather than get up and into the bathroom when I awake with the need, what better way to test the level of protection than that?? So far, the protection has worked as advertised.

    Maxi Pads

I have used "pads" for several years now, as a good in-between to manage my daytime dribbles. I have tried several versions, the depends "mens" look a lot like these. Mostly I use a product from Walgreens, and it works well for me during the day, but is not as large as these styles are. Interesting views from other readers about putting these into their diapers! Interesting as I also reuse my day pads into my nighttime diapers which I now have to wear after an accident in bed about a year ago. Wife insists on adequate nite time protection and these pads are just part of that solution now. Many nights they do get used to the MAX as I often take advantage of my protection as opposed to getting out of bed in the middle of the night.
  17. My urologist several years ago advised me my urine leakage would get worse, and the pads I used in the beginning will need to be upgraded at some point. I have not told him I am using diapers now at night, after an agreement with my wife after a nighttime bed wetting episode. My yearly is coming up in the fall again, and I may have to update him on that. I do have a health care nurse call me monthly on behalf of my GP who I see twice a year, and I have spoken to my call nurse several times about my urine leakage getting worse and my urologist's prognosis so it is in my GP's medical charts. What is not is that I wear diapers each night, but if the discussion moves in that direction, I will not avoid mentioning the fact to either my GP or my well care nurse.
  18. Not sure about the definition of this but in my case, it is more than a few drops, as often as I get up off the pot, I leak a bit more into my protective pad, a second or two which is more than a few drops for sure. Most concerning to me though is prior to making it onto the pot, I often start to leak if I need to go in a big way which without my pads, would really be a problem for my underwear and pants in many cases. Should add that my urologist is aware of these issues, and attributes this to a prostrate surgery I had in addition to my Type 2 diabetes and did recommend the use of incon pads for now and possibly something more as it is warranted.
  19. I see my urologist yearly (due to family history) and my GP twice a year due to several issues. I had a procedure done on my prostrate a number of years ago to decrease my prostrate size, and since that and the onset of diabetes I have lost a lot more of my urine control. I started wearing pads even before the procedure due to my OAB at the suggestion of my urologist, and he predicted that with the onset of Diabetes, my dribbling would get worse as it impacts the nerves in the area that controls urine release. It has, to the point that during the day, I simply go to the bathroom at first feeling of bladder filling, resulting in going for a sit down at least every hour. Yes, I now sit as I have little control of my stream so that is only method to keep my clothes from getting dribbled on. My GP is fully aware of these issues as well, so it is well documented in my medical record. More recently, I started to wet in bed, to the point that I have to wear protection every night, including larger absorbent guards and waterproof pants. My wife and I spoke about these solutions after my first night's wetting some time ago. Since that time, I have recently graduated to briefs as the guards I started with were pushed to the max on a couple of occasions. On my next GP visit, I will be updating my doc to the current situation, and he will certainly be adding Enuresis to my charts as that is where I am now, certainly if I have more than one drink of alcohol in the evening. The point in all of this is that your medical professionals need to know all your history! In my case, the urologist has the most insight into what is happening to me, but on the other hand, my GP has to be aware of it as well. They are on the alert for signs of other more serious issues, that can't be fixed with a wardrobe modification. As to gradually losing control of my urine, if that is the only problem that I have to endure in my latter years, I am feeling very lucky as many of my friends and acquaintances have already left me due to much more serious issues
  20. Yesterday was an interesting day as I was out in the garden for a good part of the afternoon, and after that, had a real thirst and as a result, had several tall glasses of ice water. Maybe the burger I had for lunch had a bit much seasoning on or something to stir up this thirst? In any event, latter I sat down in front of the computer and sorted out some bills, and grabbed a beer as I typically do for this process, but soon got a call from my kids wanting to go out for dinner, but we had to go early to get a table as Friday night was always busy. As we arrived before our kids did, I ordered a tall mug which was mostly gone when they arrived, but when we ordered dinner, of course I had to have another. Point to this, is I had a lot of liquid volume this afternoon and evening, and should have went to bed with some extra protection on, which I did not plan for when I retired early. I did wake up a couple of hours in and made it into the bathroom which saved me from overflowing my protection for sure, as by the middle of the night, I had wet heavily and as I was stirring come morning, went again, completely saturating my protection, to the point, I decided to get up a bit early. Good thing too as when I checked, my Gary active pants were holding some of the overflow, but they did their job sparing my bed. The moral of the story is, I will be telling my wife that I had a near miss of wetting the sheets last night, and need to move up to some better products prior to bed time next time a situation like this presents itself. I am sure she will agree as we had this discussion initially when I started to use protection prior to bed, starting with minimal protection and moving up to something more adequate as need arises.
  21. I have protection on every night since the time I did wet the bed after a rough night involving a few drinks and a medical issue I was not aware of, and as a result, not wet the "bed" since that time. Can't say the same thing about my night time protection, as it is often wet or used when I leave my bed in the morning. This started to be an occurrence when I came to understand that I was discarding this absorbent material in the morning typically after every use, so why not take advantage of it if the need arose during the night, which often does about 3-4hrs in if I have a couple of beers the previous evening. So in reality considering the definition I have seen here, you can call me a "bed wetter" on those occasions I guess, on average a couple times a week it seems?
  22. I am attempting to avoid getting out of bed at night to use the potty, as a couple times during the night messes with my night's sleep. Most often I will use my diaper at least once, but if it was a more than one beer evening, it can be several times. I still wake when I go, but can quickly roll over and go back to sleep, not something that happens if I get up, and walk to and from the bath room at night when our temps are always down to conserve energy. With summer coming, I will have to see if the warmer evenings have the same effect on my bathroom trips.
  23. I am in the same boat as sport, when I had my first bed wetting event, my wife and I agreed that using a bed mat to protect the mattress and wearing a good level of wetting protection at night was the best option for me, and I have not looked back or questioned that conclusion. These days, it has proven to be the right choice as there are always some mornings each week that I wake to a wet diaper, but the sheets are always dry
  24. I have moved on to the point now that on some nights, rather than get out of bed to pee, I simply roll onto my back and use my belted pad to relieve my immediate need. I roll over and sleep the extra hour or two prior to getting up. I have found that when I get up, I have a much harder time getting back to sleep than when I roll over and go? I realized some time ago that I was tossing these used pads in the morning in any case, so why not use them if that helps, and it does help me get that extra hour or so of sleep. Guess that makes me a true bedwetter now, but in reality I have been for some time, just that I have accepted it now!
