  1. Since my bed wetting incident last year, my wife expects me to wear proper protection before crawling into bed. Even as we put a mattress protector under our sheets after that event as well, she does not want to deal with wet sheets again I was told, so it is diapers and waterproof pants prior to bed every night since, and she does check on occasion to ensure that I am in compliance!
  2. I typically don't extend these conversations that I prompt, but in this case, I feel it important to make my primary point again. I was not speaking about something that can be overcome with proper training, I was speaking of a true handicap, something that you have to deal with no matter what. It is understandable why in some case, parents are hard on their kids if they have an accident, even as I don't agree with this course of action, but in the end, they are attempting to help the kids understand that this was not acceptable as they DO NOT HAVE A HANDICAP, but are learning to react to natural feelings and should be doing that in an appropriate fashion. I do agree with some of what is said above, many people don't understand that this is truly a handicap for most adults, not what I spoke of above when children first have to learn the difference between the diapers they use prior to learning how to get to a toilet in time.
  3. I have been seeing a urologist at least yearly for more than two decadess now, and understand that what they deal with on a regular basis, are people that have issues with their bladder control. I see in the waiting room, a vast array of folks, some much younger than me, and others about my age and older. My doctors have told me long ago that my symptoms often lead to continence issues, which they have, and even with the procedures that are available, one of which I went through to help prolong my ability to avoid this as well as the most common form of cancer in men, I was always aware that I may be dealing with wetting problems to a greater degree as I became older, which I am now dealing with. To be sure, that office does expect to see and offer advice about absorbent protection products, and even dispenses these on occasion as I learned after my procedure, advising the need for these for a period of time till things heal after the work was done on my prostrate. That was nearly 10 yrs ago but since that point, things have gone downhill as I was told to expect. Daytime I am always using a pad to keep my clothes dry, and at night now, I wear a diaper and waterproof pant to keep my bed dry. Am I ashamed, not at all, no more than any other medical hardship. I am careful and modest in how I use and dispose of these products, as many still don't understand that these are no different than a walking cane, or eyeglasses, only something to help normalize my lifestyle as I deal with this small handicap.
  4. This last summer, one evening I had a bit more to drink than I should have, and combined with what I later learned to be vertigo, I wet my bed for the first time I can ever remember. Since that point, have been treated for vertigo, but agreed with my wife to start wearing protection to bed, and have done so ever since. While it is great for my occasional dribbles, I have also learned to occasionally use this protection later in the night, to avoid getting out of bed to go like I would typically do. So at least once a week, I do actually wet in bed, but now it's only me that gets wet.
  5. Well maybe our moderators should consider a section for active or inactive stories and make this simple for some of us?
  6. Thanks for the great comments on this subject, and I see a common thread in all the responses. I will be glad to know that as I now "have to" wear protection to bed every night, that I can be classified as a "bed wetter". Granted I do not use this protection every night, and some nights/mornings I am awake when I use it, the fact that I have been relegated to NEED it due to a bed wetting occurrence some time back, puts me into this category if I am understanding of what I see.
  7. After reading some of the above, I seem to be a bit confused now? Are you considered a bed wetter only if you are wet when you get up, and have no recollection of it, or as I always thought, if you wet in your bed even if you are awake when you do it?
  8. I understand the concern over prostrate issues when in family history, I too have had to deal with that and see a urologist regularlly as a result. I already have had one procedure done to reduce the size of it significantly, and that in combination with some type 2 diabetes has left me with little feeling of control about when it is time to go. For several years now I have had to use pads during the day to catch the before if I don't get there in time, and the after dripping especially if I do not sit and wait for things to stop completely. To avoid using more protection during the day, I stay close to a toilet, using it every 30-40 minutes. More recently I have had some issues in bed, and now with my wife's blessings, I am wearing a thin diaper with a waterproof pant over it every night. Seems like it gets used 2-3 times per week already. Every visit I have with my urologist, I discuss this, and he advises that with the combination of things I have going on, I should expect it to get worse over time, not better. The point of this is that the prostrate is a tricky thing, and any surgery done on it no matter how minimal, will probably damage some nerves and lead to a level of incontinence, something probably worse if there are other circumstances like I described.
  9. The stigma of wearing "diapers" is going away quickly it seems. Point in context is all the adds on TV about wearing fancy pullups which are nothing but diapers with a different cover to seem more like regular underwear. If you doubt this, take a walk into any pharmacy or big box department store and walk into the adult incontinence isle. Many stores now have several as the choices are so many. Yes, these are not the very long lasting ABDL versions, but they are getting better and better it seems IE TENA and even Depend are making better longer lasting products that appear in these spaces. Obviously, there is a need for these products, IE more people with problems than we believe, or these products would not be so apparent and in such large quantity. And again to my main point, the adds that we see a lot of anymore on TV are helping greatly to diminish the stigma that has existed over needing to use diapers as an adult. No matter what they call them these days, they are still diapers!
  10. As I read about the issues mentioned above, I noticed that a large group of individuals are not included or even mentioned. I am speaking of the ladies that have weak bladders due to many reasons, the majority said to be childbirth changing things, and the gents that with older age encounter issues due mainly to prostrate health or lack of. The point, a majority of the diaper companies' media adds are focused today on these groups of people, who were not mentioned in the discussions above? I believe you should add a group4 for this group to be accurate with your assertions?
  11. Just a friendly reminder that there are some very good and discrete items available today that fit into your regular underwear that will provide protection for most dribbles and small voids. Why not take advantage of those products as opposed to going out without anything even for special events?
  12. As a result of my bedwetting occurrence a month ago, I now sleep over a mattress protector as well as in a waterproof diaper cover with a belted diaper below it. My wife sat me down and had a discussion shortly after this event, and I mentioned that I had often woken up in nick of time to get into the bathroom, and the pad that I wear daily in my underwear has been getting used on regular basis. After some discussion, we agreed on the protection that I now use, and it is working great as I can and do use the toilet at night without too much difficulty getting my protection down and back up, and wife is happy as well! If you are wondering, yes I have had a few wetting events since starting this, but nothing of enough volume to totally use the belted shield, as am waking up in time to make it to bathroom for majority of the event. (I also have the Gary waterproof pant as another line of defense) The most important outcome of this is I now sleep a lot better knowing that I will not get the bed or mattress wet if I do have another major wetting event! And if these do escalate into something more regular or substantial, my wife and I agree that it will require a move to a more substantial diaper but for now, we are both happy!
  13. Driving for me has never been a problem for urination, as if I don't stop every 1.5 hrs, it will happen for sure. When traveling for more that an hour, I always wear some sort of a diaper especially with freeway driving. Some years back, I learned a hard lesson as I was not yet wearing protection, and was in a section of construction where several rest areas along a stretch were closed and I had a bout of diarrhea. It was not good to deal with when I was finally able to stop-lesson learned for sure! Now with older age, my OAB requires a trip to a bathroom about every hour during the day, and 2-3 times at night!
  14. I also had a procedure done on prostrate several years ago. It was something new was told, called Rezume I recall. In any case, it reduced the size of the prostrate to allow urination to be easier ( didn't get to a cath prior to but was in one for a week after) and I was in absorbent underwear for about a week after the cath was removed. The clinic gave me a small stack of diapers to use, as they said they were out of the pullups? In any case, that helped me with a better stream, got me off one of the meds I was on, but now I am dealing with OAB on top of a loss of feeling from my long term Type 2 Diabetes. The pads I use now are starting to get a lot of use, so expect I will be back to something more substantial soon. My last visit to see Urology, said that OAB is common in older people with bladder shrinkage, and in my case, my other symptoms are bound to get worse as time goes on so I should be prepared to deal with it as it happens. Doc indicated that I am accepting of things quite well so far so expects no problems in the future even if I have to graduate to more absorbent underwear as he assured me many folks he sees are also doing.
  15. I can relate to Stevewet as I too have Type2 D and have some of the same symptoms but not yet as severe as he has explained. I am being treated for this disease but my urologist tells me my IC symptoms will probably worsen as I age further. As it stands now, I use pads in my underwear day and night, but eventually this will change to something more protective as accidents require. So far, only one nite time incident but several issues during the day in last couple years. Diapers are certainly in my future.
  16. It could be real in the not distant future! Can anyone, thinking about all that has happened in the last 10 years, say truthfully that 10 years from now this can't be true. Everyone is working hard at moving people out of prisons today, why not a regression center in exchange for a prison term for some violent offenders?
  17. DeeCee has a point, but it is misguided. Our SYTEM of government is not to blame, it is who we elect to hold power that has corrupted it and is driving us in the wrong direction. Keep in mind, those folks who only live for power will govern for themselves, and their select group of ideologues, and the hell with the rest of us common folks. We are at a crossroads today, and unless we start voting for people that will serve the general public in the best interest of that GENERAL PUBLIC, as opposed to a few select people, respect the constitution as our founders created it, and rule with common sense again, we will not survive as the longest living form of government much longer as the strife and turmoil today is tearing us all apart!
  18. I hate to disagree with Elfy but I live in Minnesota, and my grandson goes to a high school in our district that does tolerate a kid who believes he is a cat, to the point that they have installed a litter box in a space just for that kid to use. Keep in mind, this is Mn, not the rest of the US that has allowed this to happen, and by that I mean to say the school administration and the parents! I do not blame the kid as much as his responsible elders as trust me, kids will push as far as they are allowed to making a point! I will add that we have a school board election coming up in a few weeks and I for one am voting for some overall changes, I hope the majority of the community feels the same way but we will soon find that out!
  19. Interesting turn of events, but I was wondering, the walker they were put into, why don't the just stand up to move around, as opposed to bumping their knees on the tray to move. No mention of any restraint system in play so that would be the logical thing to do I suspect? In any case, just a small point to a really great story, please keep it going as I am sure our hero has a lot more in store for him before he gets to leave this facility.
  20. Correct me if I am wrong, but haven't I read that there are stents available that medical professionals can insert that can only be removed by them with a special tool? If a person has a blockage and this is the only method to pass urine, it could be a life saver, and if the choice becomes how to collect it at that point, I guess I would go for the diapers as opposed to a bag of sorts?
  21. I have to step up again in this conversation, as there is a bit of uninformed rhetoric going on here. As I said, Medicade is supported by taxes, mostly by state taxes I will add- check it out if you doubt me, the states pay for the greatest share of Medicade and as a result, rules about who can get what from this program differ from state to state. Medicare is NOT funded by social security, it is a program by itself and collects funds as a separate item from employers and employees, much like social security but within its own program. (check your pay stub, you will see deductions for social security as well as medicare) As of today, it is self sustaining (Ie no federal tax support) but that is short lived, same as social security as each program is headed to insolvency. To say that employer provided health plans were not far superior to what we have with Medicare is certainly not accurate, I worked for 50 yrs prior to retirement, in the beginning I purchased my own health insurance, but following 4 decades, it was employer provided. The last 20 yrs I had the best coverage I ever had, including great dental and vision, as well as pharma with no restrictions. This was with a company that employed only about 70,000 people but they pursued good health practices, promoting healthy activities, even paying for many of the extra things we can do to stay healthy. They were self insured (their trust partners that facilitated the program) paid doctors and hospitals typically in the 70-90% range of billing compared to what Medicare does, which is less than 30% of what they call covered expenses (I check my medical billings, you should as well) How long can our health system survive getting paid such a small portion of what they bill. Could you live today if your pay checks were only 1/3rd of what you anticipate? Why do you think that most doctors will not take new patients on Medicare, only patients they have a history with prior to getting on Medicare. I have traveled the world in my working life and witnessed first hand what socialized medicine has done in other countries, and can see that we are certainly on a path in that direction. I hope we will remember what we are about to give up!!!
  22. When did the US start to pay for medical insurance from the tax rolls? I suppose you could say that Medicade is tax paid assistance, but correct me if I am wrong, but don't the states pay for most of that? That would fit the bill for sure but not as a "USA pd benefit per say. When it comes to Medicare, that was sold to people like social security was, you pay into a system all your working life, and when you retire you draw out of it and still pay a portion even then. Unfortunately, Medicare and Social Security are very poorly managed, have money used for many things not intended for originally, and are going to run out of primary funds very soon. Worse than that, Medicare is very poor insurance coverage IE when I left my company which was self-insured, my copay for medical, dental, pharma, and vision was less that what my Medicare and supplement is now, and I had no restrictions on which doctors I could see, and the doctors were all getting paid much more than what they get pd now on our govt managed insurance!
  23. I had one a few months ago, after an evening of drinking, and as a result wet the bed for the first time in forever. Guess the drink inhibited me enough to not get up even as I was having this dream and actually wetting the bed, but I did wake up a short time later and had to deal with the mess, and an angry wife.
  24. I would argue this is all about perspective. IE For older folks today this is almost the norm, especially ladies it seems? For those that have a health reason for use of diapers, it is not sociably acceptable to look down on them either. Even many younger kids are in diapers a lot longer these days than has been the case in the past, for what ever reason, but it too seems to be acceptable. On the other hand, if you don't fit into these classes, and are doing it for the fun of it, yes you may be frowned on by your peer group or more conservative adults, the reason not to flaunt this if it is your thing!
  25. The worst when driving is to experience a nasty messy pants, especially if your protection is not up to it. This happened to me years ago when I was driving to a business meeting the following day, about 4hrs from home. As I was getting within 1 hr of my stop for the night, I felt the need to stop but the freeway was under construction and rest areas were closed. Since I had some low level of protection on, I had dribbled a bit and was damp but not prepared for the sudden onslaught of diarrhea that overcame me a short time later and I really made a mess of myself. Thank goodness there was a rest stop just prior to my arrival, but I waddled into it and had a real mess on my hands to clean up, including wiping my pants clean the best I could. I carried one messed up pullup out of the stall and dumped it into the trash that day, another guy was in there doing his job at the wall, and got an eye full I expect. I did change my shirt but had to make an excuse for the condition of my pants when checking into the motel, something about working in poor conditions that day.
