Lower capacity diapers like bedwetting pants or thinner cloth diapers should generally be changed at least every 4 hours or so unless you've pooped in them, in that case change as soon as reasonably possible.

Higher capacity diapers can generally last about 8-10 hrs, most ABDL diapers fall in this category.

Top of the line diapers such as PeekABU, Megamax, etc, can generally last for about 12-15 hrs.

If you drink a lot of water, divide the above times by half.

I  have  been in the same double BabyDoll diaper up to 25 hours and while the diaper was quite wet, I have a special liner that keeps most of my chastity area dry and it was still quite dtry then. However, the double BabyDoll was intended for 12-16 hours time. A single babyDoll can go for 12 hours. It is not really meant for a specific time length but can do longer in case a change is incovenient

The time one spends in the same diaper depends on other factors -

Night time diapers are usually worn for the full duration of sleep - it is very hard for a sleeping person to change their own diaper, but another person will change a wet / soiled diaper of a sleeping diaper wearer to enable that sleeping person to stay comfortable etc. A baby in cloth will be changed every four hours asleep or awake - while in disposables, when asleep, they are usually not changed until morning / the child wakes unless they poop in the diaper. It is normal to change a babies messy diaper as soon as possible after the baby has finished filling their diapers. This is to avoid the poop creating rashes etc.

Day time diapers, because the wearer is awake and can, if they want, change as often as they wish. However, although some diapers are supposed to have the capacity to last 12+ hours, it is usually not a good idea - from a skin condition perspective - to stay in a wet diaper for longer than a few hours while a messy diaper may need to be changed more often due to the acids within poop.

Cloth diapers with plastic pants can create a humid environment to such an extent that skin can prune and breakdown faster than a disposable diaper. This is due to the fact that plastic pants creates a sealed environment unlike disposables. As a result, contrary to what others have stated, such diapers need to be changed at least every 2-4 hours even if they are not wetted / messed in - which should not be an issue for babies / most of us as they usually wet every 15 mins odd.

you should keep your diaper on for as long as you think it is appropriate.  Mega maxes for example are supposed to last 12 hours. This does not mean however that you need to keep them on for 12 hours, and you should use your discretion to determine how long you want to keep your diaper on. I have gone a full 18 to 20 hours between changes, but that is because of the fact that during the day I did not use it that much. You also want to be mindful of your diapers condition, whether you have sensitive skin, or whether you may have some sort of rash. You should never leave your diaper on so long that you have a severe red angry rash, because it will take a long time to get rid of it. Also you want to make sure that when you are changing yourself that you are cleaning yourself up very well because then you will make sure that your more comfortable and your skin will be in a better condition.

Speaking from experience, you will know when you think it is appropriate to change your diaper. If you take your diaper off and you notice that it is very very noticeable aroma wise, or if you have something that you have released, it probably would be in your best interest to change it. This also is dependent on the diaper that you're using. A mega Max is probably going to be a better diaper all around than some diaper that is a prevail, because it is built to deal with people that are severely incontinent, versus people who may end up just releasing small amounts. Some diapers are built to allow for someone to empty a lot into them, while some are not designed for that, and are basically a diaper that is considered a pull up.

Use your discretion, and you will know.  It all depends on the type of diaper you use and its quality. Better quality diapers last longer, but you may not want to keep them on for a long long period in excess of seven hours. It will also depend on if you are releasing your bladder or bowel contents within the diaper. This will be what you should use to determine whether it should be changed and when.

Good Luck!
