LGGrace Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 As I was eating breakfast this morning which was fried eggs with chilly on top; something that I would not have ever tried before moving to the southwest of the US, I started thinking about all of the weird food that I have tried over the years. With our unconventional choice in underwear, I wonder what strange things the DD community has eaten over the years. I will start with some of mine: Guinean Pig - I tried it when I studied abroad one summer in Ecuador during undergrad. Not bad, tastes like a cross between rabbit and duck. I probably ate a lot more weird stuff that summer, but decided to not ask questions about what I was eating. Frog Legs - Taste like 'stringy' chicken legs. Alligator Tail - Taste like chicken. Ox Tail - I love them in burritos. Boiled duck embryo eggs - Taste just like any hard-boiled egg, just don't look at the egg after you take a bite, it is weird to see what looks like feathers in it. In the Philippines, you eat it with salt and vinegar. Duck Liver Patte - Tastes great spread on bread. Liverwurst - Like bologna, but with organ meat, mainly liver. I like it on toast with spicy brown mustard. Wild duck heart - Tried it with one of my brothers as a dare. It is very chewy and tastes like iron.
Little BabyDoll Christine Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 I have had picled pigs' feet and pickled lamb's tongue. I liked them 1
AbabeBill Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 Chicken gizzard soup. Cow’s stomach soup, (Menudo) Chicken livers, fried in butter. Oxtail soup. Blutwurst, sometimes spelled bloodwurst. Head cheese, or tongue wurst. Fleischkäse, another German deli meat. I may have more, but that’s all I can think of right now. 1
rusty pins Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 Sweetbreads, or brains. They come mostly from calves, lamb and young cattle. Big in France and first time I had them it was weird. They tasted to me like chicken liver. Some people slice and fry them, sometimes with scrambled eggs. I was traveling with a large international group in 1976, staying with host families and they made them whole in a cream sauce. The thing I wasn't crazy about were the little capillaries that tended to crunch a bit when you bit into them. In Germany my host family couldn't understand how I liked to drink my tea plain without cream in it! To them it was probably like eating raw meat! Some countries dip their bread in flavored olive oil and get grossed out by people who slather their bread with butter. Philadelphia Scrapple is another one. It's made of boiled organ meat like kidney, liver and other meat scraps with corn meal, wheat flower and spices, mixed like a pudding, formed into a loaf and then sliced and fried. Mostly Pennsylvania Dutch and German origin where they tended to use every part of an animal so as not to waste anything. It is tasty but I have only found it when I go to Pennsylvania, mostly in the Lancaster regions. I have no idea why it isn't more wide spread throughout the country unless it is an acquired taste many people don't know about. Probably not like packaged balognia or other meats and there are probably just a few companies in Pennsylvania that make it for local distribution. 2
WeaselDiaperBoy Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 When I lived in Finland I tried Blood Sausage (Miustamakkara), and Liver Casserole (Maksalaatikko). I wasn't told what I was eating until it was half done. It wasn't horrible. I am not a liver fan, but I would try blood sausage again. 1
Little BabyDoll Christine Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 I will pass on anything tastes like, after I have a few bites, they can pick me up with a good magnet 1
Dubious Posted July 27, 2024 Posted July 27, 2024 I thought liver pate was a strange food until I Googled it. I eat that almost daily on bread. Its cheap and healthy. Also eat caviar. I have eaten Haggis. Only once, but it was good. Whale, many years ago, cant remember what it tasted like, but I guess it tasted like whale... I rarely say no to food, but I did say no when offered mussels, looks disgusting. 1
DieselDiapered Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 Mostly just different wild game. Elk, beaver, rattlesnake, raccoon, whitetail deer, bear, and alligator. 1

I remember seeing them all the time growing up in the 1 gallon jar where the brine was dyed pink. Was never brave enough to try them then and I have not seen them in probably 15 years. Only saw cow brains on a menu at a restaurant when I was a kid, but would not try it because that was when mad cow disease was all over the news at the time. Especially since Arctic natives are the only people who eat whales regularly nowadays. Never thought of mussels being a weird food since I eat them all the time along with clams and oysters. They may look like snot but taste savory and salty. 11 hours ago, DieselDiapered said: Mostly just different wild game. Elk, beaver, rattlesnake, raccoon, whitetail deer, bear, and alligator. Never had rattlesnake but heard it was good. Anytime I think of eating a snake all I can think about is the movie Waterboy. Deer has been such a stable of my diet growing up that it was no different than beef or pork to me. My grandfather even raised deer and wild turkeys. He also had a pet bobcat.
DieselDiapered Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 Rattlesnake is good. Not a ton of flavor but I had to try it anyway. Venison has been a staple in my diet my entire life. 1
tuffy Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 I've always been fond of Escargot. I've had venison and thought it was fine as well as rabbit. I've tried kimchi before, but didn't really care for the funk and didn't care for caviar either. Likewise with any kind of liver... not even liver curry made it taste good and I generally love Indian food. I never thought I'd like sushi, but after reading George Takei's autobiography (he goes on and on about how great his mother's sushi tasted), I was won over and liked it. I'll try most anything once, but not necessarily twice 1
billyshpilkis Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 Sushi is fantastic, for my tastes. Ate lots of rabbit when I was young, but it started disappearing from grocery stores a long time ago. I've had venison numerous times.. gets gamey pretty quick, but if you do stews and soups with salt and pepper, it mitigates that. For a long time I was very adventurous, and would try pretty much anything. Brains, tongue, liver, deer, caviar, snails, tripe; all pretty tasty stuff. And then one day I had some alligator gumbo. About fifteen minutes after eating it, I felt woozy and almost like I was drugged. I had other fiends try it, but they did not experience the same effects. I tried it again a day later, and it had the exact same effect on me. Since then, reptile has been off the menu. YMMV, but I can't recommend it. And I've been distinctly less adventurous ever since. For exotic foods, I'm gonna stick to falafel, pupusas and Pho from here on in probably. Oh, and sushi. Love that sushi. 1
Cute_Kitten Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 The "weirdest" food I've eaten were elk, deer, and bison. 1

We also eat Blood Sausage (Blod Pølse) with beet sugar syrup around Christmas time. Goes well with a stout beer. The strangest dish I've had is Scottish haggis (stuffed cow belly). It tastes surprisingly good - especially if you drink smoked Scotch whiskey with the food, which removes some of the less good taste. @LGGrace Eggs with chilly on top. I have to try this 😊 2
WetDad Posted August 1, 2024 Posted August 1, 2024 Crickets for me. In a tempura restaurant in Tokyo. Crunchy and kinda nutty tasting. 1

froggy Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 I have had both dried catapillar and whole dried little fishes fixed in with fried cabbage. They were like crunchy croutons. Also tried mashed casava, root. It is just wood fiber, filling, but on calory intake. Finally, boiled groundnuts, alias peanuts, were served ans eaten with the shells. All of these were eaten in southern africa. 2
Cute_Kitten Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 A friend of mine has eaten a cricket burger and chocolate covered ants on their travels. I admire people with the adventurous palates. I'm not sure I could eat the bugs. 😆
