Recommended Posts

We upgraded the chat room this morning but are currently dealing with a few bugs:

  1. User List is not showing all users, and is not updating.
  2. Some images are not showing.
  3. Disable PMs is not working.

We are awaiting fixes/advice from the software maker. Please bare with us.

Mikey, do you know if there's going to be a chat list near the bottom of the chat like the old version? Because I'm really missing that feature. It's really inconvenient not having it.

@BabyJeggySpideyBoy

You mean:  Like when we had tabs that said "General Chat" and  tab for each user on the bottom bar???  because if you are, I think that it is already there:  The main chat channel is "Diapers" rather than General Chat.  We will have to let Mikey and his server tech(s) work their magic and see what happens bud :)

There was a list of people near the bottom of the chat from private PMS you had messaged in the past, also the general chat was available in that category as well, so you could easily flip flop between the two in the middle of a conversation with your buddy to see if they were online or not.

Yes that's exactly what I mean. Thanks for summing that up Brian. I really needed that.

No Problem:  They DO have the tabs below;  each time you PM, and you open a window, the tabs appear below just as before, but they are BLUE, and apparently show how many convos like the RED numbers used to, are showing ;)

Past messages are gone I'm afraid to say.

@DailyDi

ahhhhh..OK.....figured that as well, because when you do an upgrade, you MAY lose functionality, but hopefully, when we LOSE something, there is always a net GAIN :)

I will assume it is because it is still being worked on but when I go to the chat page I'm not seeing any chat rooms to join. Just "No open conversations. Click a user or room!" but no rooms available. Havig seen a little bit of it earlier though I like the way it looks :)

EDIT: Never mind, I just refreshed and it appeared :)

To be a little more descriptive, a few people are seeing their browsers output text <img> tags instead of emoji when emoji are chosen from the popup menu. These tags appear unparsed to everyone in the chat.  Andy was running desktop Firefox at the time. Not everyone running Firefox is seeing the problem, though.

Update: Thanks to our efforts they have discovered a bug in the current version's code that affects the embedded and mobile chat options, which is what we use. They are writing a patch now and an update will be available soon to fix it.

Not only to Mikey, but don't forget: for every server there are always individuals who are behind the scenes working to make sure that whatever we're seeing on one side of the screen works on the other side of the screen. This also can be making sure the server is on, making sure there are no errors, making sure the thing doesn't crash, and also people who code, or program things into the server, or add functionality to the server. As an administrator, Mikey has to make the decisions that he thinks are the best for all of his domains, he has to make the decisions that he thinks are best for the rules regulations policies and other things that happen. He also has to choose when to update and what to update, and sometimes like has been the case this week, things do not work exactly the way we think it should, and I'm sure as Mikey is aware, there are times on his end where they put something in, and it doesn't work the way he wants it to work either.

As an administrator of four domains myself, I will say this: doing the job that Mikey does, or his admins, or his moderators, or his chat mods, is not easy. As an administrator myself, there are times when I want to pull my hair out, because something is not working the way I think it should, or maybe I made a mistake and I took something out that I wish I didn't! When that happens, you can pull your hair out or you can end up feeling really rotten because of a mistake you made.Remember, every time that something happens , such as an error or a bug or something like this, mickey's moderators somehow get a hold of him, or someone gets a hold of them going the other way, and they discuss issues, and I'm sure that they have plenty of these discussions. Being that we are all users of his house, we all must be patient, and understand that whenever I hear or see someone say " this sucks" or other words that showed displeasure, that I'm sure that we may not like the way something is, but we should always be mindful that Mikey may not like it either, and he might be trying to fix what somebody does not like. That is why it's important, that you tell Mikey if you have a issue, and then you let him try to work it out.

I am sure that there are a lot of us that have used the old chat system: speaking as a user of the system myself: I can tell you that I like the fact that I can log in as myself on the chat system, and I can sit there all day all night, and unless there's some sort of glitch, I don't have to worry about having myself kicked off or reset in the middle of a conversation. This seems to be the most telling problem that we have had for the last three years and even longer than that. I know that Mikey has told me that he has resisted making changes for the time being, because he had issues with the software that we're dealing with, and he knew that he had issues, but he was trying to find a way to take care of that problem or problems. So far, I like what I see, and what I see that i like, outweighs what I don't like:of course, there are going to be issues with user lists, messaging, blocking, and other things . Those are to be expected , and we all know that Mikey works extra extra hard, keeping this place running, and we try to help him as much as we can . It is our responsibility as users to help you Mikey as much as we can , and I have pledged that , and I pledge it to you again that should you need help from me, I am here to help you .

in closing I would like to say the following: I know that it is a pain in the neck sometimes to deal with new systems, or to have things change, and most of us don't like the sea change, but in this case I think that the change that Mikey made is the best particular decision that he has made. When you are an administrator you have to weigh the positives and the negatives when you make a decision. I know that Mikey probably has spent many hours trying to make that decision, and it's not easy to do. Let's remember this: for everything that Mikey has done on his end, he has to deal with all of the problems with the chat system, or any problem that has to do with the administration of his site. Remember: Mikey is only one man, and he does what he does because he loves what he does, and he provides us a place that we can call our safe zone, where we can be the people we want to be, and I'm glad to be a member here.

So please: remember that he is working with his server technicians, and he is taking care of things that need to be taken care of, and it looks like he made a decision to upgrade what he installed so that it works even better than it does now. For every new thing that happens, there are going to be glitches and there are going to be problems, but we need to be patient and let Mikey and his team work through these issues, and we also need to continue to tell Mikey if there are any issues that we are finding, such as things that have to do with the userless, or whether something is working or not in differing devices, because without users telling him what the deal is, he cannot know that there's an issue. So Please be patient with them, because they work hard and I'm sure that Mikey has probably pulled his hair out a couple of times because of this. I say this because I've done it myself, and I know it's not fun: one day Mikey, I hope to be able to give you a great big cyber hug, because you and your team are amazing!

If I haven't said it: thank you for everything you do, thank you and your team for everything that you do, because without good people, the experience would never be the same, and I feel like and continue to feel that this place is home. Thank you for making the decision to make the upgrade, because I can tell you right now being able to stay on the server without being kicked off every 5 to 7 minutes is one of the best things. On Monday night I believe, I spent all day on the server going back and forth between window one window two and window 3, and I didn't move one iota. I stayed on until after midnight I believe, and I loved it. Was able to talk to many individuals, and I kept on hearing the same things, that people didn't like what they saw, and a few times I actually said to people, give the man time, give his people the time they need, and they will fix it.

Thanks!

Brian

Thanks Brian, I do carefully consider updates and often put them off longer than I should because I know people hate change. We recently hit a wall where the software we have is no longer going to be supported and we have to do some updates to keep everything running and secure.

The error with the chat software was not a known bug until I reported it. I think it is a rare installation we use integrating it within the forum, so users of the basic software were not affected. I hope for a patch within a day or two, and then the chat should be good for a while. Other updates will be taking place behind the scenes that may cause short outages, but it should not be noticeable change.

@DailyDi

thank you for the response! I figured as much. When you are running an older version of software, and you run into the wall like you said, you must make the type of decision that says: do I make the update, and risk having problems, or do I leave it alone and end up having security issues on top of problems? The hardest thing that I ever had to do so far when running a server is to decide to back up everything I had, making sure for about 2 1/2 weeks that I had every single file that I needed, and then take it all offline and then command a reinstall. I don't know why I waited so long to do the update, and I was resisting doing the update myself, because I figured Debian 8 would be able to withstand almost anything, but then I feel like I should be updating and keeping my server operational period after speaking to several individuals online, I made the decision to make the update, and after I had done several installations and made sure that I had every single thing that I needed, as well as PHP and all of the necessary add-ons, I made the change and I updated. It took me a while, but the update itself wasn't as bad as I thought it would have been, and I almost thought myself in the head because I was thinking to myself that it would be harder to update to the newest version of Debian than it would be to keep the old version and risk security updates.

Like you, I ran into a wall: PHP would only run if I did an update to PHP: because I had to make sure that I had everyone of my plugins for my websites, I resisted the temptation to just Willy nilly start updating. This is because, if you make one mistake, you may lose something and then you have to go back and reinstall everything again. Believe me when I say, I know exactly what it is like to have to do exactly what you guys did, and I am so happy that you guys have made the change, and I know it's a pain in the backside, but I think you will find after you get the patch you need, that your stability in your chat system will be a heck of a lot better, and that means that someone can log in at 6:00 AM if they wish, and sit there all day long, and not go anywhere. I even tested that today at work period I was open in my excel, and also on daily diapers at the same time in chat. One of the things I did was to keep switching back and forth between excel and the server, and during the entire two hours that I had done that, I didn't go anywhere, and I didn't have to relog and I didn't have to refresh. I will cautiously say that I think you killed the refresh monster for good! Let's hope that what I say is true, and I salute you because this is one of the painstaking things that can be a pain in your backside, and I know that the most important thing is you have to level the idea of security and safety over convenience, and sometimes you have to wait: sometimes it's better to wait, because you don't want to just put on any old thing, just because somebody says that it's better than what you had.

I commend your operators and your admins: I remember being online on Monday: @Elfy @Abi and @spoonchicken we're on, and I can say that I thought it was really cute: we had heard the words: " this sucks, I don't like this!" and I'll never forget it, because I had heard that all day long, and I finally said to several people on the chat system " give Mikey and his team the chance to fix these problems, and keep reporting them in the thread that he has created so that he knows what is going on, because he cannot fix it if he's not sure what is going on."  I then end up getting thanked by @Abi, and she had heard several complaints herself, and because I have been in the position of being a chat mod myself in Tallahassee, I know what it can be like. I think she even said something in and on the lines of " go suck a paci" and I can tell you that was really awesome! We all have to work together to make sure that the system works the best it can. When you hear complaints all day long, I think that it is a good idea to remember that it might not be easy for our user base to deal with change, but as I said above in my other post, it is not easy for you either Sir, or your admins. Each of you have to be able to know how to end up running the entire system again, or maybe, if you're an admin or a moderator, you have to learn new controls, and know how to use them. I remember a couple of times we updated our IRC software, and we updated from one version to another. The newer version had a few bugs in it, and also had some new changes that were better than the older version. We had to learn how to use some of our server operator commands and our server operations scripts, and in some cases we had to redesign our scripts to be able to work with that version. There were even scripts that we had to get rid of because it wasn't compatible with that version.

I can tell you so far I am very happy, and I'm sure that you and your team will be able to work through all of the bugs, and every time someone reports a bug, you probably will pick it up and then if it's serious enough or it's apart of a larger problem, you will be able to tell the developers, and your server team what's going on, and somebody will be able to log on and be able to fix the problem or code something or make changes.Hopefully Mikey, you won't ever have to get up at 2:00 o'clock in the morning again, and then put in code again, because the chat system is blank !  I know it is not easy to make change, and sometimes it's hard to deal with change , but sometimes change is necessary. Overall, I think that we can work through the bugs, and I think the stability is a lot better than it was before. I will reserve judgment on anything else until I am further able to run in chat and be able to test the other functions. What I can ask other people is continue to help Mikey make the changes that he needs to make, by reporting anything out of the ordinary in this thread, so he will have a running list of things that he needs to check on. It is our responsibility as users to help him do as much as we can because he has a lot that he probably has on his plate, and the easier we can make the transition and the upgrade for him the better it will be for all of us. !

@DailyDi

just FYI: I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, or if it's part or something that is in your bad word filters: if I were to say @froggy's name in the chat system, and I don't call him Mr frog, I get his name as: "****************"  and I know that we're not using bad language when using his name but even the form software does it, is that an error?

Curious,

I am using the voice commands on my tablet when doing so, but I still don't understand why it would decide to put the F word in when I'm saying FROGGY
