Army_Baby1
Well my Doctor talked me into trying it and I'm hoping it works. So this morning at 9 in the morning I went under the needle, no it was not that bad. I just do not know what to expect and when to expect it as he said it might take up to a week, really a week? Has anyone had botox and if so did it work for you? Link to comment
Rockies Fan in Diapers
I myself am not incontient, but I do get injected with botox for too much muscletone on the left side of my body, & it helps to small degree for that & for my condition maximum effect starts around the second week after the injection. For me there's no side effects or anything & I'm really glad I tried it, Hope this helps & Good Luck, Rockies Fan. Link to comment
Creepymouse
I saw a show somewhere that said some doctors are also using Botox to treat overactive underarm sweating? It's interesting stuff, but pretty dangerous in the wrong hands. Link to comment

Baby Brian
Army_baby1, I just finished up an interstim test implant for urge incontinence. I'm getting scheduled for botox soon but my urologist wants to do yet another urodynamic test first. He plans on injecting the botox into a bunch of areas in my bladder wall to reduce/eliminate my bladder spasms. I don't have a date yet but I'll post here as things progress. Have you had any progress on your injection(s), if so what are you experiencing? Link to comment
Checkingoutall
Hi, I have had Botox injections twice into my bladder. Being a male, I was put under to have the procedure done. I was hoping that it would help and it did for about 3-4 weeks somewhat but wore off to quick. It works differently with each person. Because my incontinence is thought to be due to nerve problems, it didn't work for me. As for the interstim, I am not a candidate for it because I am always working around high manganic fields. So since nothing has worked or can work for me, my urologist has accepted for now that I use diapers until my incontinence start to cause me kidney problems and then at that time, my bladder will be removed and I will have to wear a bag on my belly to collect urine. tiggerboy
I had botox in my anus last week to help anal fissure heal. It was done under a general anesthetic (with a curette of the fissure at the same time). The botox didn't hurt at all (although the curette did for a few days). Since the botox, I find that when I cough or sneeze I have mild bowel incontinence. This is probably also connected to the fibre and stool softeners I take every day to help with the anal fissures. I also find that when I need to have a BM, I can't hold it in very long, and over the past week, I have messed myself several times when the poop just starts oozing out (as it is quite soft). I am finding the diapers a godsend for this, although I do have to change more than usual. Link to comment
Baby Brian
Well I had the urodynamics test done. Big shocker, my urologist couldn't find anything definitive but he could see something is going on (just like I told him). At least he still scheduled the bladder botox for me on the 13th. He gave it a 50/50 chance it will either work or it won't. Why can't these doctors just go with something they know will work instead of guessing? Oh well, here's to a glass of something so strong it only needs to be half full. Link to comment
Puggsley
Hi Brian, Thanks for the update, and its good to hear you're making some progress. You've wanted the botox for a while, so I've got my fingers crossed for the results your after. All the best! Link to comment
Army_Baby1
Good luck Brain. I had the Botox done 2 months ago and it was great at first. No over active bladder, no more wetting myself or having to wear diapers all the time. Now for the down side for me after 3 or 4 weeks I started to not being able to empty my bladder all the way so now I have to catheter 3 times a day to empty but the doctor thinks that it should end in another month or so. We are also hoping that I still will not go back to having accidents every day. BUT remember everyone is different, I'm the fist one that has had this problem after botox that my doctor has treated in 5 years. So it might be just me that has this problem. But at the same time each doctor is different and there is many different spots in the bladder that the botox is put. Mine was all at the top or the bladder, so the whole top of my bladder is the numb part. Best of luck to you. Army_baby Link to comment
Baby Brian
Amy_Baby, I hope I'm not hijacking your thread here, just wanting to contribute to it. My doctor warned me the same thing could happen, he prescribed me Uribel to try and actively counter any possible spasms or inability to empty all the way. How are coping with it now (aside from the catheters)? I assume your OAB translated to urge incontinence, did you ever have pain with the urges, and did that ever go away (even now)? I'm also curious to see if you have an increase in the times you wet now, which I understand can be a side effect of not completely emptying you bladder. Ok, So I finally had the botox done too. The docs knocked me out, and after the procedure I mostly felt fine except I had a really bad & painful urge to pee, but I couldn't. Once I did it burned really bad (most likely from the catheter going in and out a bit for each injection) and I peed a lot of blood. They held me until I went again (which didn't take too long), It burned again and I got about half blood & half pee that time. As expected, I haven't noticed an real change yet, which will take about a week to develop. It still burns a bit when I peed this morning but that is getting better. I've also noticed my urine is green! Not sure if that's form an antiseptic, or excess botox, or what? Is any of this about what you experienced Amy_Baby? Baby Brian Link to comment
warpiper
If they put you out, they might have used propofol which will turn your pee greenish in color for a bit as it leaves your body. -piper Link to comment
Army_Baby1
Hay Brian For me it was not to bad, they knocked me out for it and then when I came to it was just go pee and yes that burned, then it was go home. It was not that bad over all, I think I went pee 2 to 3 time and there was blood in it after that no blood but the burning did last a few days. After everything said it was not to bad for that part of it. But if you asked me if I'm going to do it again, NO. 2 months of catheters is more then plenty for me. I think if I knew all this first then maybe I would have done it still. Army_toddler Link to comment
Baby Brian
5 days into this botox treatment and I can definetly feel its effect. I don't get the same painful urges I normally would, instead I get a great feeling of need that I have to pee. This need can be put off for even a few minutes, which is usually enough time to make it to the bathroom. The downside is that I already have a greatly reduced flow, and I'm retaining urine (I'm now only able to completely empty my bladder when I strain and push hard enough to the point of nearly going number two). Obviously there are still times when I feel it is better to just continue using my diapers, but because of the retention I sometimes can't go at all which only makes that great feeling of need into an urge again. I don't see my urologist until Friday, but I should be ok holding out until then. 1 Link to comment
Army_Baby1
Sorry to here that you are ending up with problems. What you are describing is the same problems that I ended up with. The good news is that in a few months the botox wears off. But at the same point my doctor has said that there is a chance that I might not have to go back into diapers. But after today I do not think that is going to happen. I was doing yard work today and had to refuel the weeder, while I was bent down pouring the fuel into the weeder I ended up wetting myself. I hope you the best and look foward to hearing from you. Link to comment
Baby Brian
Well it's been long enough for things to have settled, and I'm still retaining pee in a bad way. My urologist said he'd expected this to happen and gave me a bunch of intermittent catheters (plus I've received a bunch more in the mail). He want's me to cath 4 times daily but I always get a burning pain at my tip when ever I insert a cath, and also get a spasm when removing it. As such I've been getting away with only doing it once or twice daily and just suffering the rest of the day. On the bright side I haven't been getting painful urges but it really seems like I'm just trading on discomfort for another. Once this wears off in 2-3 more months I'll start pushing for a better solution. Link to comment
Army_Baby1
With the same problem as you, my doctor has me cath. 3 times a day. One thing I can say is that if you use a smaller cath like I do then it is not as bad. At the VA center they had said that I would be using a 16fr and then they sent me 12fr. The only difference is how long you have to sit to drain the bladder. Link to comment
adhb
Incomplete bladder emptying and the need to catheterize yourself sounds to me like a "cure" that is worse, than the "disease" of incontinence. Link to comment
Puggsley
Hi Brian Sorry to hear that this didn't work out as expected, but Im glad to hear that the painful urges have dissipated. It does sound like you've found another person trying to "cure" your incontinence. I'd have a good talk to your urologist, and see if they can meet your expectations next time. I know you'd done your homework, but what you got wasn't what you were promised. Best of luck! Link to comment
ThomasInWVa
My uro is trying to convice me to have a stent inserted to keep the bladder sphincter open to allow my bladder to drain constantly. Since stents are permanent no matter what they say, I brought up the research about botox to relax the sphincter. He did some research and wasn't convinced. My bladder contracts just fine, too fine sometimes. But the sphincter doesn't always relax when it should. He feels that botox injections could impare the bladders ability to contract and I woudl retain urine. I do spams and quiver but that doesn't concern him as much as the retention does. Craisler
Stents aren't necessarily permanent; at least not by design. I had one in place for three weeks when I had kidney stone surgery. At the end of the three weeks, it was removed. I was incontinent immediately after it was removed, but gradually regained control over the next several days. Link to comment
Baby Brian
Thomasin, I wish I could get my urologist to suggest a stent (or even accept it as my request). For now though I'm stuck having to push so hard to pee that I often force my bowels as well. I've been catheterizing but I guess I'm a bit too sensitive down there, I can't stand to do it more than a couple of times a day. Ohy, what I'd give to have my sphincter permanently open instead of being so closed off as I am right now. At least this should wear off in a couple of months. Link to comment
ThomasInWVa
Intermittent catheters bother me a lot as well. My urologist had me using size 8 soft but I've found out that if I use a size 12 firm I'm it isn't as irritating. My bladder won't jump or spasm as much upon insertion and very rarely with removal. Furthermore, if I leave the cath in place for about 10-15 minutes, the bladder sphinctor stays relaxed or able to allow urine to pass during a bladder spasm much easier for about half a day or so. Puggsley
Hi Brian, Are you going to try the Botox a second time to see if they can give you the results they promised the first time? What type of cath are you using? I'll second what Thomas said, different caths can make big changes. I had big problems with one brand, but the type Im using now is excellent. Just goes in every time without any issues. Link to comment
Baby Brian
My urologist wants me to cath 4x daily but lately I've only been using just one overnight. During the day I've just been straining to empty as much as I can but not being able to fully empty my bladder makes it feel like I can only hold 1/3 of what I usually can which makes me go much more often. The catheters I was prescribed are a clear plastic type, 14fr, made by coloplast. Their a little small and tend to irritate me a little so I don't keep them in when I'm active. Besides, being intermittent caths they absolutely will migrate when I'm moving around any ways. However, I have found the clear plastic caths don't irritate me overall as much as silicone coated latex, latex, or rubber ones of the same type do (I think it's because the plastic ones dont have a slight texture to them and are smoother). Still, I also get a lot of soreness and spasms when inserting/removing them, so 4 times daily is out of the question too. I've actually been thinking of just buying my own 20fr indwelling folleys (or similar) just so I can keep them in a lot longer with out too much irritation. Update, I had an internal hemorid burst not too long ago (confirmed by a colonoscopy). It had closed up and stopped bleeding 3-4 weeks ago but because I've been having to push so hard to pee during the day it has burst open again. It doesn't hur but bleeding that much from the rear is concerning. I guess I need to cath during the day again just so I don't keep over staining myself too much. Given this Botox treatment has been much worse than my original symptoms I will not be doing this again. My urologist has told me twice now that his attempt at curing me would work with a high probability (first Interstim and now Botox). Both times now the actual results have been dismal at best and don't actually even work as promised. Link to comment
