Honestly this is classic spoiled rich kid shit cranked to 11 and with reality bending abilities thrown in... If they just raised them like normal kids without all the celebrity, pomp and expectations this wouldn't happen... Also why do I have a feeling this mission will involve our other protagonist...?

I also feel like she's not going to live the diapers down after that pacifier stunt...

? Thanks for the comment!

The quality of your writing could easily feel like it belongs in a book. I would add both your stories to my collection of zero abdl related physical copies! There is one other that I would do that to once the author finishes it if they ever had a hard copy.

I must have been really tired but I did read the last chapter just didn't comment. I am pretty sure my previous statement screams that I am enjoying this one quite a bit too.

I know the reality of physical copies is small but one can daydream can't they? :)

There is a site called "epubli.de" (but it's in German) where you can upload private books for yourself in PDF format and have them printed out as soft or hard covers. Now I don't know if they deliver outside of Germany.

And on Canava.com you can design covers.

That's really nice of you to say! Thank you! I've wanted to do a non-abdl story, but I'm not sure how well it would do, and I don't know if I could recreate the passion I put into these stories. A lot of the passion I have whilst writing these is from the Mummy/baby dynamic in it and all my dreams, fantasies and wishes. And I like to believe that being a switch brings something to my characters and their dynamic.

If I was to do a non-abdl story, I'm not sure I could bring that same passion. Maybe one day though! I've still got 3 more abdl stories planned after this one!

As for physical copies... I would love to do this, but I'd have to look into it and research it and everything before I considered it.

Chapter 5: Lily and Ashe

Today was going to be one of those days.

My bed was calling me.

I didn’t want to leave it.

I was rested enough, but I still felt like I had no energy.

But I forced myself out of bed despite this, because today, I had friends coming over.

I liked when I had an easy day with friends, I could just relax and wear my casual clothes. Whenever witches are in public, humans like to see us in traditional witch outfits, hat and robes and all that stuff. Sometimes they can be a bit more... fashionable, but the essence of the outfit is always still there.

I tried my best when interacting with the people from the village or whenever I go out of town or whatever to wear my favourite robe and hat. If I was at home, I’d wear something a lot more comfortable and... well... human.

So for me today, with Lily and Ashe visiting, I opted for a cardigan and blouse and my favourite jeans. And because Lily and I were such good friends, at one point being housemates in the city when we were younger, I could even forgo shoes.

Once I had gotten ready, or as ready as I could be bothered, I walked to the kitchen to put the kettle on, because they’d be arriving soon. Flicking the kettle on, I looked around my little house and smiled.

Partially because I loved my little house. And mostly because it was already mostly clean, meaning I didn’t have much to do.

As I quickly cleaned what little of the house that needed cleaning, making sure it was spotless, the doorbell rang.

I skipped over to the door and opened it, seeing my friends’ happy faces smiling back at me.

“Lily! Ashe! Good to see you!”

Lily rushed in for a hug, holding me closely.

“You can let go now Lils...”

“Nope. Not going to happen. I see your aura. You need this.”

“I... I can’t argue there...” I looked over Lily’s shoulder as she continued to squeeze all the negativity out of me, seeing Ashe smiling at me. I waved at him and he waved back.

Once she had squeezed me enough, I showed them in and closed the front door, conjuring the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on the outside.

“Go sit down you two, I’ll bring in some drinks. Coffee for you Lils... what about Ashe?”

“He’ll have a juice. In a glass.” Lily answered for him, causing him to blush.

“Oh wow. Cheat day I assume?”

“Yup. He gets to be a big boy today!”

“Make the most of it Ashe.” I giggled.

“Oh I will!” he said, walking into the living room.

After preparing our drinks, I brought them through on a tray and set them down on the coffee table.

Sitting down across from my friends, I took sips from my coffee and relaxed into the chair.

“So how are you hun?” Lily asked.

“I’m managing. Some days are tougher than others.”

“I know. Any luck on your search?”

“Nope. It’s harder for me here, you and Ashe were lucky; you both lived in the city.”

“I keep telling you to move closer to us, you’ll meet more people and have much better luck at finding the perfect one!”

“I know, but I like my house here. The city... the council... no thanks. I’ll just have to wait for the perfect one to land on my doorstep.”

“You do realise you won’t just answer the door and one will be lying in a basket like in the movies, right?”

“I know, but I’m not moving from this village. They need me.”

“You’re way too kind to these humans.”

“You’re dating one!”

“Yeah but he’s adorable.”

“Yes he is.” I smiled at Ashe.

He started blushing, slowly sipping from his glass.

“Be careful you don’t spill it down yourself pumpkin.” Lily wiped his face with a cloth.

“Yes Mu... Lily.” His voice started to get cuter.

“Good boy.”

I couldn’t help but feel jealous of their relationship. They were so perfect together. Ashe was so cute and innocent, and Lilith... well Lilith was like me. She was a powerful witch, but had a heart of gold. She had been so supportive when Ashe started transitioning, and continues to be now that his voice is breaking.

I wanted what they had. That connection, that trust, that bond...

“What have you been up to anyway?” Lily asked, putting the cloth in her bag.

“Recently? Not much. I went on a bit of a ride yesterday after you suggested it. It was lovely, I must admit. Seeing everything from the sky... it’s been far too long since I had done it. Even stopped off at a little village not too far from here.”

“Oh is it that one near the pixies?”

“Yeah, the boy in the corner shop asked me why the forests were always so green. Didn’t know it was pixies though. Best be careful around there if I decide to go again.”

“They’re mostly harmless. They just like to trick humans mostly, they’re friendly with us witches.”

“You know I’ve never actually met a pixie?”

“Really? They’re great for playing practical jokes on friends I’ll tell you that!”

“I’ll remember when it gets to April...”

“Don’t you dare!” Lily got defensive.

“Hey! I never said anything about playing one on you...”

“You better not, or I’ll turn Jinx into a frog.”

“He’d be much easier to deal with that way...”

“Stop ruining my threats!”

“Sorry, I’m sooooo scared... I totally wouldn’t dream of playing a prank on you...”

She gave me an evil look and sipped her coffee.

“Oh I did manage to perfect that recipe I’ve been working on. Managed to double the healing potency.”

“Really? That’s impressive! Honestly I don’t understand the whole plants thing like you do. I mean sure, I have a basic understanding and ability with them, but it’s like you talk to them.”

“I do.”

“See! That’s my point!”

“Well having an affinity for ice must... umm... be great for keeping your drinks chilled?” I teased.

A line of frost emanated from her foot, winding across the floor until it ran up my leg, causing me to instantly shiver, and ending at my cup of coffee, freezing it solid.

I tipped the frozen coffee out of the cup, and it clunked on the saucer.

Lily gave me a grin.

Just as I started thinking of ways to get her back for her little trick, Ashe shot up, putting his drink on the coffee table, being extra careful not to spill any.

He knew what would happen if he spilled any...

“Ladies, stop! No need to get back at each other! You’re both powerful witches. And I know I’m just some dumb human, but can’t we just get along?”

“Awww sweetie, you’re not some dumb human! Come here!” Lily said, lifting Ashe onto her lap and cuddling him.

She rocked him gently and I felt that twang of jealousy build up inside my chest again.

The intimacy she showed him was just so... I don’t know. I just knew that I needed that. More accurately, to give that.

“So Lily, what have you been up to lately?” I asked trying to distract myself from the jealously building up inside me.

“Not much. Mostly spending time with Ashe. It’s either that or hunting.”

“You’re still hunting?”

“Only occasionally. I like to keep my area safe, ya know?”

“I understand. We don’t get many demons out here.”

“They tend to flock to the city, it’s where the most power and corruption is, and the place they can cause the most chaos.”

“Makes sense. They still as fun to hunt as they used to be?”

“Not half as fun without you! You should join me one night.”

“Maybe...”

“Oh by the way! You’ll never guess who I saw!” Lily’s face lit up.

“Who?”

“That new witch the magazines have been loving lately. Nowl? Nol? Noelle?”

“Noelle? Noelle Teimlo?”

“Yeah! I ended up saving her from a demon attack. Was really underwhelming seeing her actually, I had heard all the hype about this girl, and she ends up falling into a pile of trash and wetting herself.”

“She wet herself?”

That part of me currently dormant suddenly awoke and I was needing to know more information.

‘That cute face... maybe she needs... no... don’t be silly... but....?’

“Yeah, she tried hiding it with her jacket, but it was obvious. At least it was to me, but then again, I’m used to it, aren’t I Ashe?” Lily teased.

His cheeks were crimson at this point and was squirming about on my sofa. He couldn’t get any cuter.

“So what happened next?”

“She ran off, conjuring a broom and she flew away. I didn’t get chance to stop her or comfort her.”

“Oh no! So the poor thing ran away to deal with it on her own?”

“I can see the cogs turning inside your head. Your aura has changed too. I know what you’re thinking, but I don’t think so. She’s just a scared little brat who wasn’t expecting to get her ass kicked. She just had an accident, that’s all.”

“Yeah... you’re probably right.”

“Don’t go chasing people who aren’t right for you. You’ll find the one eventually. When you least expect it.”

“Ugh don’t you start! The villagers have been saying that to me a lot lately!”

“Well it’s true!”

“Look, maybe I should just give up trying to find someone. Just go back to normal dating.”

“Look at how that went the last time you dated someone normal, when you got back from your trip.”

“She... was nice. But yeah, you’re right. Everything just felt off with her.”

“Just give it time, you’ll find someone.”

“I’ve been waiting so long though! I’ve tried dating, I’ve tried online stuff... none of it works. Maybe I should go back to that place you recommended...”

“Maybe you should! You seemed so happy and excited when you returned from there. I knew when I mentioned it to you that you’d fall in love with that role in a relationship. Since we first met, I knew that about you.”

“Look, you could go back and find someone there, or you could give it a bit of time here. Either way, I support you and will help however we can. We both will, won’t we Ashe?”

“Uh huh!” Ashe said excitedly, nodding his head.

“I’ll give it a bit of time.

“Is the room still just waiting there for the right person?” Lily asked, pointing upwards with her eyes.

“Yeah. Mrs Timpson in the village gave me the cutest little keepsake box that’s now in there. It nearly broke me though.”

“Oh sweetie. I understand. It took me a while after I found out about all this to find Ashe here. You’ll find someone.”

We chatted for a while longer, catching up on our lives and projects. We drank coffee and chatted for good hour or so before Ashe started to yawn.

“Oh dear, looks like Ashe needs a nap!” I announced.

“I’m... I’m no...” Ashe yawned again.

“Come on sweetheart. Time for us to go I think. We’ll get you home and maybe you can have a little nap whilst I get dinner started.”

“Do I hafta?” I could sense the change in Ashe, he’d need to get home soon and put down for a nap otherwise he was going to be cranky.

“Come on sweetie, we can come back another time. But for now, we need to get home.”

“Hmph. Okay.”

“Awww someone is a little poutypants!” I teased.

“If he’s not careful, that’s not all he’ll be!” Lily gave him a light smack on his bum.

Ashe suddenly shot up and acted as well behaved as possible. Lily got up and escorted him by the hand to the front door.

“Well it was nice seeing you, give me a call sometime or whatever. Let’s not go so long between visits next time though, okay?” I said to Lily.

“Yeah don’t worry, we’ll see you soon. Say bye bye Ashe!”

“Bye bye! I hope you find her soon! I need a friend!” Ashe said, hugging me.

As they left, I waved at them and for some reason, felt hope for the future.

I like that you keep foreshadowing and hinting about how Noelle and the village witch would make a good match, but are slow burning this and managing to first build up a story around each one of them before they end up meeting.

I’m also guessing that the old keepsake box has some concealed power and will have a role in the future. A dark power, hopefully: this story so far misses a true antagonist/villain!

I suspect there is more to that box too, and although it's brought up last chapter, there's not much mention to it. We may all be in for a surprise.

After I get caught up in current chapters on the Patreon I will not be able to speculate as much, but will still give feedback here.

Chapter 6: The Mission

As I walked downstairs, carrying my bag that I had just finished packing, I saw my friends all stood there, waiting for me.

“Took you long enough.” Alex gave me that look. The one he gave me when he was annoyed.

“Yeah yeah, let’s just go shall we? Everyone ready?”

“Yeah!” said Stella and Willow, picking up their bags effortlessly and walking out the door.

“One... seeeecond.” Alex heaved his bag on to his back, the thing must have weighed a ton.

“Alex... why didn’t you just make it lighter with a spell? Or augment your body to carry it better? That’s your affinity after all...”

“Because, Noelle, I want to be as strong as possible, magically, mentally and physically. I can’t appear weak or anything if we’re going on a mission appointed by the council!”

“Just don’t slow us down, okay?”

“I... won’t!” he was clearly struggling. He took one step then fell over, the bag crushing him.

“What did you even bring with you?”

“Books. Lots of books on demons. On magic. I... you can’t be too prepared!”

“Take them out now, you don’t need them. It’s just a simple demon hunt. We go in, kick it’s arse, and leave. Maybe it’s a bit tough, I mean the council wouldn’t send us on any generic demon mission, but we’ll still kick its arse. We don’t need books. We just hit it with attacks until it dies. End of. Mission complete.”

“But... what if we need some specific lore or knowledge that one of the books could contain?”

“You’ve read those books at least four times over. If you can’t remember them and the knowledge they contain, then you don’t deserve to be a witch.”

“Hey!” he looked visibly hurt by that comment, which made me feel a bit bad.

I know I can be mean, snarky, rude, condescending, a bitch, egotistical, full of myself... the list goes on... but I still didn’t like hurting people’s feelings. It’s the common movie trope, badass is really a big softie, only in my case, I had to be a badass or else I never would have made it this far. My father was a powerful witch with a light affinity, but my mother... my mother was human. As human as you can be.

Sure, it’s a lot easier with mixed parents these days, but I still got bullied at school, I got judged more harshly when it came to my magical studies, and I had to work twice as hard as other witches... but it’s what made me the witch I am today. And now here I am... one of the most powerful witches in the country, about to go out on a mission sent from the council.

But seeing the hurt in his eyes, I dropped the facade and my bag and ran over to him. Giving him the biggest hug I could, he dropped his bag on the floor too and hugged me back.

“I’m sorry Alex. I didn’t mean it. You know how I get.”

“Hey, I know the real you from the illusion you show everyone else. We’ve been friends since we were kids. Just... try not to lose yourself in your illusion.”

I squeezed him tighter and buried my face in his neck.

“You’re a good witch you know...”

“And you’re a good person. Maybe people would like you more if you showed this side of yourself to them.”

“You know I can’t do that Alex. I can’t appear weak.”

He held me closer. It was funny, he was the one who needed reassuring at first, now look at us.

“But seriously Alex, drop the books. You can manage without them.”

“Fine. But I’m allowed to tell you ‘I told you so’ if we come across something that we need the books for.”

“Promise. But we shouldn’t get to that point. Now let’s get going!”

I broke up the hug and grabbed my bag. Rushing to the front door, I stopped and waited for him to empty all the books from his bag.

“Ready!” he smiled.

Locking up the front door, I turned around to see my three best friends waiting in my car with the roof down.

“Come on, let’s go!” Stella cheered.

Throwing my bag into the boot, I hopped into the driver’s seat and started the engine.

It roared into life and I felt a rush of excitement as I put my foot on the pedal, racing off towards the council chambers.

-------------------------------------------------

“You’re late...” the booming voice filled the chambers.

“Sorry Miss Victoria. We weren’t sure what we needed to bring, we haven’t been briefed on what we’ll be doing.”

“Excuses excuses...” Isabella had decided to stick her nose in.

“Yes well you’re here now. You’ve got a long trip ahead of you, so we’ll cut to the chase.” Victoria cut Isabella off.

We stood in a line in front of the council, all stood to attention. We couldn’t blow this now, not after being late already. If we convinced the council we could handle this, we’d be assigned even better missions later on, and we’d earn their respect. And earning the council’s respect was the biggest honour.

“Miss Teimlo. You are squad leader for this. You call the shots. If your team members mess up, that’s on you. If a team member dies...”

‘Dies? This demon can’t be that strong, can it?’

“Then that’s on you too. We’re putting our trust in your abilities, and we want to test your leadership qualities. So make sure your team is ready.”

“Yes Miss.” It shocked me even more how serious I was taking this. Usually I’d be jokey and snarky, but I couldn’t let this mission fail. And if they seriously think one of us could die... I didn’t want that fate for any of my friends.

“So your mission is to locate and destroy a demon or demonic entity that has made an appearance near or in the town of Basinwall.”

“Basinwall, Miss?”

“Yes. It’s some quaint little village in the middle of the countryside. Population of less than one hundred, all expendable casualties in regards to this mission.”

I didn’t like that order. It’s one order I would try not to let myself even consider. If at all possible, I wouldn’t let even one soul perish. But still...

“I understand, Miss.” I lied.

“Good. Now there has been rumours of a demon we haven’t seen the likes of in over a century. A Demon Lord.”

“A Lord? Are you sure?”

“Our sources confirmed it to be so. And because of its power and influence, be careful interacting with the townsfolk. It may have corrupted them. So be aware of your surroundings and the villagers. And remember, it can take the form of anyone.”

“You... you think we can take on a Demon Lord, Miss Victoria?”

“I do. But on the off chance that it proves too much for you to handle, I want you to retreat and return to us. We will then judge the situation based off your intel and take whatever necessary action that may involve.”

“And that would be?”

“What she’s trying to say is we’ll nuke the Demon with a meteor.” Isabella smiled.

“But... but that would destroy the village! You can’t do that!”

“Are you not prepared for this mission? We have several other capable witches lined up if you’re not...” Victoria’s face was serious. She really wasn’t kidding.

“No Miss. We’ll... we’ll handle it.”

“Good. Now your job is to travel to Basinwall, collect intel, then form a plan of attack against the Lord. Once you are ready, kill the beast and return.”

“Yes Miss. As you ordered.”

“One last thing... you can’t fly or teleport. If you use any significant amount of magic anywhere near the Lord, he will sense you. You have to be as discreet as possible, so take that gaudy car of yours.”

“Yes Miss. Is that all?”

“That is all. You may leave now. And good luck.”

“Thank you Miss Victoria. We will return shortly...” we walked out of the chambers and out into the setting sunlight.

“If we make it back...”

-------------------------------------------------

“Road trip!” Stella shouted, jumping into the passenger seat.

“Well it’s not dampened your mood... didn’t you hear all that stuff she said? Acceptable casualties?  Meteor? Demon LORD!” Alex was freaking out a bit so I held his hand whilst Willow climbed in the back seat.

“It’s going to be okay Alex. You know I won’t let that happen...”

He nodded and I helped him climb into the car before walking around and getting in my seat.

I took a deep breath, putting both hands on the wheel and trying to psych myself up.

“You okay Noelle?” Stella asked.

“...Yeah. Just... no one dies, okay? And I mean NO ONE. No casualties, no meteor. Just one dead demon lord. That’s it.”

Stella just looked at me and smiled.

“We thought you’d say that. And we happily agree. So let’s get going. We may need to see about finding a place to stay when we get there, it’s already late, and it could take a while to gather enough intel to figure out where the Demon Lord is. So foot on the pedal little missy!”

I pouted a bit, reluctantly starting the car and drove off towards the nearest exit out of the city.

-------------------------------------------------

We drove for miles and miles, through dense forests and winding roads. The further out of the city we got, the warmer it got. Which was weird for January.

“Hey look! The trees aren’t bare here! What’s going on with that?” Alex said, pointing at the forest next to us.

“Must be magic...” Willow answered.

“Witches maybe? Or fae folk?” Stella asked.

“Maybe. Just... just be on guard okay?” I said, making the occupants of the car go silent.

“Hey look! On the side of the road!”

A small boy stood on the side of the empty road. There were no other cars, no people, and no animals. The forest stood still, not even swaying by the wind.

“Pull over! He could need help!” Stella nudged me and I pulled over just next to the small boy.

He looked like he was about 8 or so, with no parents in sight.

“Umm... hi there little one... are you okay? Where’s your Mummy and Daddy?”

“Umm... I don’t know. They were here a minute ago...”

As Willow talked to the small boy, I could sense a shimmer of light sparkle around the boy’s outline.

‘Wait... oh shit...’

“Willow...”

“Yeah Noelle?” she said, turning around to look at me.

“Don’t... say... another... word.”

She saw the fear in my eyes and she froze still, not even turning back around to face the boy.

I looked over her shoulder and the boy’s face had changed. He was grinning. As his mouth opened I could see razor sharp teeth line his mouth.

“So you can see the real me?” His voice had changed... it had become... cruel and monsterous.

“Pixies!” I yelled.

I pushed my foot on the accelerator, the car tyres screeched... but we went nowhere.

“Noelle! Stop!”

I pulled my foot off the pedal. Someone’s hand rested on my shoulder. It was Alex.

“Look, you know those books I wanted to bring... well I remember something.”

He turned to face the pixie in disguise.

“Pixies love to cause mischief and lead people astray. They wouldn’t actually harm us.”

“The boy one is clever and knows of us!” the pixie’s smile returned to normal.

“I read all about you. Fascinating little beings.”

“So be it. I’ll leave you be.”

“Is that it? Seriously?”

“Pixies are harmless. They just like to mess with people. They’re like children.”

“So like you Noelle!” Stella teased.

“Fuck you!”

As we turned back to where the pixie was standing, we saw nothing. He had vanished.

“....Let’s just go.” I said, driving off.

“I told you so!” Alex was so smug right now.

“Hey, I wasn’t wrong either! You didn’t need the books, because you remembered it!” I returned the smug expression right back at him as we drove off.

-------------------------------------------------

We drove for a good hour or two, putting the roof back up when it got darker.

“We’re going to need to find a place to stay. But we better be careful if there’s a Demon Lord about. We can’t trust anyone...” Stella pointed out.

“Well that makes it difficult...” I stopped mid sentence as I saw the sign for Basinwall pass us.

“We’re here, now, be on guard.”

I pulled off to the side road that lead to Basinwall.

It wasn’t long before we started seeing the buildings that made up the little village in the middle of nowhere.

“Wow... it’s so... quiet and peaceful here. I couldn’t think of living here after spending my life in the city!” Willow said with her face pressed against the window.

“It’s... cute.” Alex commented.

“I just need to find a bed. I hate road trips.” Stella was in her typical mood.

“Look, we’ll pull up in the centre of the village and ask around for a hotel or a B&B or something...” it was the only thing I could come up with... although I wasn’t sure if there would be anything even resembling a hotel for miles.

Pulling up to a stop near the fountain in the middle of the village, we saw a couple of people out still, despite it being evening now.

“Excuse me?” I said, rolling down my window, trying to flag the attention of a nearby old woman.

“Yes dearie?” she smiled at me with that endearing quality grandma’s have.

“We’re looking for a place to stay nearby, is there a hotel or a bed and breakfast or something?”

“Here? In Basinwall? Sorry, no. There may be one person who could shelter you for the night, but I’ll have to give her a call first. She may not be in the mood for visitors...”

“Well that’s better than roughing it.”

“Wait here then dearie, I’ll just go give her a call.”

We got out of the car and started unloading out luggage from the boot.

I grabbed my small bag that had my hat attached to it.

“Well we may as well see what this person is offering. If it’s not suitable, we’ll rough it, okay? I’m sure we could conjure some tents.”

“If there’s a bed, I’m there. I don’t care if it’s the Demon Lord’s own freaking bed at this point, my back hurts and I need to lie down!” Stella arched her back, it cracked and she let out a small moan.

We waited a good five minutes, and the old woman was yet to return...

“Maybe she’s the Demon Lord? Maybe she’s his minion?” Willow nudged me.

“Or maybe she’s an old woman and it takes her a while to get about?” I gave Willow the look, you know the one, the ‘calm the fuck down’ look.

It was at that moment that a dark green pool of light formed, creating a portal just in front of the fountain.

“Be on guard!”

We each grabbed our wands, drawing them, ready to fight whatever appeared through the portal. We had to be ready, if the Demon Lord was ready for a fight, we better be ready to give him one.

The portal stabilised.

“Prepare spells!”

Charging the first spell that came to mind, we stood in front of my car, ready to fire.

Out walked a figure. A tall figure dressed in black. Feminine. Large hat. Glasses. Cute green eyes and freckles...

...wait... cute?

“Oh dear. Looks like she was right. What’s a group of witches doing in my village?” the woman spoke, looking at each of us.

...Even her voice is cute...

“Umm... who are you? And what do you mean your village?” Alex asked timidly, dropping his wand.

“I’m Rose. I’m the village witch.”

Wait, those still exist?” Willow stopped charging her wand too.

“Well I hope so, otherwise I’d be out of a job!” the raven-haired woman joked.

...her smile too...

“And you lot are?”

“We’ve... umm... been sent by the council.” I stepped up. I tried to act confident but something about this woman... she intimidated me more than any of the council ever has.

“Council?” she looked suspicious.

“We’re... umm... hunting a demon.”

“This far out? I thought they usually kept themselves out in the city?”

For some reason I felt like I could trust her. I saw no glimmer around her, no indication that there was an illusion. I was fairly certain she wasn’t the Demon Lord in disguise.

“Umm... it’s a particularly powerful one.”

“Noelle, why are you telling her this?” Stella nudged me with her wand.

“I don’t sense any illusion...”

Noelle? Wait...” Rose said, walking closer to our group.

She flicked her wrist, and a ball of light appeared in her hand, hovering an inch away from her soft skin.

“Miss Teimlo, I presume?”

“Umm... yeah...?” I stuttered.

“You’re much cuter than your pictures make you out to be.”

I blushed and looked at my feet.

“Wait... how did you cast that without a wand?” Stella butted in.

“Oh this? It’s pretty simple.” She created a ball of light in her other hand effortlessly without a wand.

“But that shouldn’t be possible!”

“And who told you that, the council?”

“...Well, yeah!”

“Well I learned a few tricks of my own.”

My friends looked awestruck at her ability to wield magic without using a wand.

I however, was awestruck for a completely different reason.

Conclusion so far:

The Council takes people casualties and obviously holds back other witches in exercising their power.
Therefore, I do not like the Council.

Our two main characters have finally met I am curious how it continues.

Ohhhh

She got it bad

And why do I feel like there's more going to this mission then the council is letting on....

Could this even be a false flag with the young hot shots as deniable assets?

Hey quick question, are demons able to do magic? Cause I doubt demons use wands…. ??

also! With the multiple mentions of pixies, im kind of hoping that they come back into play later, whether it’s the final battle or some mini quest along the way where their tricks end up scaring someone or tricking someone (who doesn’t know about pixies) into helping our party of witches

Also I’m gonna have to agree with what others are saying, it’s looking like the council is prettttty sketchy, can’t wait for more!

Thanks for the comment!?

The odd thing would be that the council wasn't aware that there was a village witch and add to that the fact the council thinks of that town as acceptable casualties. I agree, there is something off with the council.

Thank you so much for the comment!?

Chapter 7: Lodging

I was cooking dinner when the phone rang.

“Hello?”

“Hello dearie.”

“Mrs Timpson? It’s late, what’s the matter?”

“Oh nothing dear, but I did want to tell you four people just pulled up in some fancy sports car. They were looking for a hotel or something nearby.”

“Don’t they know there isn’t a hotel for miles?”

“I told them I’d check with you first... I didn’t want to intrude or assume, but they looked tired from a long journey and were going to rough it. I figured...”

“I wasn’t planning on having company, but I suppose I could check them out, maybe give them a bed for the night. Thanks Mrs Timpson, I’ll take care of them.”

“Oh good, I’d hate for them to have to sleep in that car, it looks dreadfully uncomfortable. But Rose dear?”

“Yes?”

“I think they may be witches. At least one has a hat just like yours.”

“Oh really now... This I definitely have to see!”

------------------------------------------------------------

“So Mrs Timpson said you needed a place to crash for the night?” I asked.

I looked around at the witches that had been sent by the council.

Noelle, some tall confident young woman, another a bit smaller and more timid, and... either that boy is mute or he’s just way too shy.

“Umm... yes please...” Noelle said timidly.

She looked like a schoolgirl with a crush. She was so shy and timid, which was a huge departure from the confident woman I saw in magazines and on TV.

‘God, she’s so cute. How can someone be so cute?’ I thought to myself.

“Well I can make some room if you don’t mind sharing a bit?”

“Anything is better than roughing it or spending a night sleeping in that car.” Said the taller one.

“Well you’re welcome to join me. My house is just up the road on the hill. I’ll create a portal for us when you’ve got your bags ready.”

“No portals please Miss...” Noelle finally looked up from her feet.

“Why not?”

“Magic may signal our prey.” she muttered.

I had an idea as to what they were hunting and I felt bad for them. They didn’t stand a chance.

‘Why is the council sending a bunch of newbies?’ I thought to myself. ‘Are they just sacrificing them at this point?’

“Oh... okay. Well if that’s the way you want to play it, you better grab your bags and carry them up the path as there isn’t a road. You’ll have to leave your car here.”

I pointed to the hill where my house stood. You could barely see it from the village, but they seemed to understand.

Noelle’s team grabbed their bags and proceeded up the path I pointed out. Noelle however was lagging behind at her car, making sure it was locked. I stayed behind with her.

“You don’t have to wait for me, you can go on ahead Miss...”

Rose. Call me Rose.”

“That’s a pretty... umm... nice to meet you Rose.”

I squealed internally as she blushed.

“You lock your car up, I’ll carry your bag for you, sweetie.”

I tested the waters a bit. I knew she was headstrong, I knew she was independent and probably never liked relying on anyone. And I figured she must hate pet names.

‘Let’s see if she corrects me...’

“Oh... umm... thank you... umm... you don’t have to though Rose...”

‘Oh my god! She really is into me! I’ve seen her in interviews, if it was anyone else she would have torn them a new one...’

“Shush. Let me help you. You’ve been driving all evening I assume?”

“Umm.... uh huh. We left the council chambers late afternoon.”

“Oh then definitely, you let me handle your bag. How about as payment, you keep me company on the walk up?”

“Umm... I can do that... sure... thank you.”

I smiled at her and her face got redder.

It was adorable.

We walked up the path, her friends much further ahead of us. The evening was beautiful for a late night stroll, and to share it with this little cutie was... perfect.

“So big city witch eh? When did you graduate?” I asked her.

“I... I didn’t.”

“You... you didn’t pass the test? How old are you?”

“Umm twenty nine...”

“Twenty nine and you’ve still not passed the test? How come?”

“I... I don’t do well with tutors okay!”

I must have hit a nerve, this was the first time she raised her voice louder than a mouse with me.

“Not found the right one?” I asked with the sweetest, most maternal voice I could manage.

“I’ve had a few...”

“Let me guess, you’ve scared them all off? How many have you had?”

“Uh huh... umm... at least 11... as of yesterday.”

“As of? Did you push another one away only yesterday?”

“Umm... I threw a piano at his head.”

I couldn’t help but giggle, I tried to cover it with my mouth but it was too late.

“What’s so funny?” She asked, sounding really childish.

“Nothing. I’ve just never heard of a witch throwing a piano at a tutor before. I threw a violin at mine, but never a piano!”

“So you had issues too?”

“Apparently not as bad as you do sweetie,” she blushed as soon as I called her that name again, “but I had a lot of arguments with mine.”

Oh. Well... I just haven’t found the right one. They are all weaker than me.”

“Oh so that’s what this is about? You want a tutor who is more powerful than you? From what I’ve heard... that’s going to be difficult to find.”

A cute little smile formed on her face.

“So Noelle, what’s the council doing sending four young witches out to battle a greater demon?”

“They want to test our potential. Or I assume mine anyway.”

“Be careful with them. They may seem to care about other witches, but they only care for themselves. If you mess up with them, they’ll make your life difficult.”

“I... I can handle myself.”

“I’m sure you can sweetie. But still, be careful okay?”

“Umm... okay. Thanks.”

“You’re very welcome poppet.”

As we were nearing my house, the other three were waiting by my front door for us.

The whole way up I wanted to reach out and take her hand, but I knew it was way too soon.

“So... how old are you? You don’t look much older than us...” She said, surprising me.

“Because I’m not! I’m only thirty one!”

“Oh! I just figured... with your advanced casting technique...”

“No, I’m just a quick learner. I used to be a lot like you, you know!”

“You did?”

“Yeah. I used to live in the city, I was in the magazines, doing photo shoots and everything.”

“What happened?”

“That’s a story for another time. Now... here we are.”

I walked past her friends and pulled my keys out.

As I fiddled with the lock, I took a few seconds longer than it should have so I could listen to their conversation they were having behind me in whispers.

“What was that Noelle? She could be... you know!”

“She... I don’t know... she seems nice. Like I can trust her...”

“You look like you did that time you had a crush on Maggie back in high school!” the boy said.

‘So she’s gay? Or at least she’s interested in girls... even better!’

Shush! She’s just nice okay?”

“I heard her call you sweetie! If any of us called you that, or Victoria or any other witch, you would have frozen them to death and shattered their body!”

“Shush!” she started getting flustered, which just made it even cuter. I was right, she was letting me get away with it. Maybe I’d have to explore this further...

“Come on, come in. I was just cooking dinner, you are welcome to join me if you’re hungry!”

“Thank you so much.” The boy was very polite.

“Sorry, I never got all your names...”

“Stella!” the tall one announced.

“Willow.”

“Alex.”

“Well it’s lovely to meet you all. Just shove your bags in the hallway, we’ll sort out sleeping arrangements later. For now, you must be starving!”

I showed them into the kitchen and they sat around my rustic little kitchen table.

“I love your home Miss Rose!” Alex said.

I went to correct them, but ‘Miss Rose’ had a nice ring to it so I let them continue.

“Yeah... very... old school.” The one called Willow said, sitting down.

“A bit too old school for me... I bet this place doesn’t even have Wi-Fi!” said Stella.

“Hecate69.” I replied.

Noelle giggled a bit and it took every ounce of self control not to react.

“Huh?” Stella looked confused.

“The password for the Wi-Fi. Just because you’re not in the city doesn’t mean we’re not in the modern age...”

“Sorry...” she shut up and started playing with her phone.

“So... everyone okay with stew?”

They all nodded.

“Good job I was making extras for the week, now I’ve got plenty for all of us!”

I dished out the stew with a side of chips for everyone, placing their plates in front of them.

Noelle looked up at me with concern in her eyes.

“Umm... Miss Rose?”

“Yes sweetie?”

“What... what about you? Are you not eating?”

“There’s no room for me here, and I’ll need to prepare your rooms anyway. So you four eat, whilst I go do that, then I’ll eat whilst you unpack all your stuff.”

I left them to chat amongst themselves, heading upstairs to the guest bedroom.

“This is not going to fit four people... hmm... I mean I could ask... should I though?”

I looked around the guest bedroom at the illusions I had created. They were there because I was trying to figure out how to fit four people into one bedroom, but no matter which way I positioned the beds, I just couldn’t fit everyone in. The best I could do was three.

Doing the best I could, I created two extra beds next to the main guest one. It was a bit of a tight squeeze, but I figured it would be better than sleeping in a tent or their car.

I walked out of the bedroom and into mine.

“Guess one will have to sleep here then. Either that or on the sofa... I’ll go ask, and then I can create a bed if needed.”

Walking part way down the stairs, I could hear them teasing Noelle, something I bet they never usually get to do. At least with this little resistance. I couldn’t make out some of the voices, but I could hear their words.

“You like her!”

“Shut up!”

“Just be careful Noelle. We don’t know who she is. She could be influenced by the demon. We have to be alert.”

“Look, she’s a witch like us. We have an innate resistance to demonic influence. So she must too.”

“I guess. I mean this stew is pretty good, the herbs really make it taste special!”

“Yeah I haven’t had a home cooked meal like this in forever!”

“Hey! What about last Sunday when I cooked for all of us?”

“Sorry Willow, it wasn’t this good.”

Deciding that I better interrupt, I walked down the last few steps and entered the kitchen.

“Hey, all done. How is the food?”

“Amazing!”

“Really good!”

“Yeah it’s okay...”

I looked at Noelle.

“Noelle? How do you like it?”

“It... it’s really yummy...”

Yummy? Noelle? Are you sure YOU haven’t been influenced by the demon? I’ve never heard you say the word yummy!” Stella was being mean at this point, I wanted to step in, to protect Noelle, but apparently she already had it handled as Stella’s plate flew up and covered the poor girl in gravy.

“No fighting at the dinner table...” I gave my most stern voice and they all froze.

“Sorry...”

I could see now that her little puppy dog act would be unbeatable. If she wanted, she could probably have me wrapped around her little finger if she wanted to with that...

“It’s okay sweetie. Just make sure you eat it all up okay? Oh and before I forget, I could only fit three beds in the guest room. One of you will have to sleep on the sofa or I’ll sleep on the sofa and one of you takes my bed.”

They all looked around at each other, probably deciding who was the odd one out.

“I’ll sleep...” Noelle spoke up but hesitated when she realised what she was about to suggest. “On the sofa...”

“How about Alex takes the sofa, he’s the only guy after all?” Stella decided to ruin everything. I’d have to be careful with her...

“Umm yeah, I can take the sofa...” Alex agreed.

“Okay then, so Noelle, Stella and Willow stay in the guest bedroom, but how about I sleep on the sofa and Alex take my bed. It’s the least I can do. Perfect.” I said walking off.

‘Not perfect. But no Rose... don’t rush things. You can’t push her too much too quickly! It’s not ideal having a guy in your bed, but I can’t expect the poor guy to sleep on the sofa if he’s a guest.’

“You guys eat that, and then head upstairs with your bags. You’ll find the guest room is the door at the end of the landing. Alex, my bedroom is the door before that.” I said to them all.

“Thanks Miss Rose.” Alex said, the other two nodding. Noelle stayed quiet and continued eating.

After they had all finished eating, I let them chat for a bit. I took my dinner in the living room and watched TV.

And to my surprise, someone crept in just as I was mid-bite.

“Umm...”

It was Noelle.

“Oh, yes sweetpea?”

She blushed.

“Umm... my friends are going to bed. I was... I was just wondering if you wanted some company?”

“That’s very sweet of you dear, but you’ve been driving all evening and you look shattered. You go head off to bed, okay poppet?”

“Oh okay...” her voice sounded lifeless.

I wanted to call her back and sit her on my lap. I wanted to spend the whole evening with her... but I couldn’t.

She walked off dejectedly.

I couldn’t let her go off feeling like this...

“Sweetie?” I called out.

Noelle turned around in surprise, hope returning to her face.

“Would you like a drink before you head to bed? You can stay with me for a bit and keep me company whilst I finish eating.”

“I’d like that.” Her voice sounded full of life again.

“What would you like? I know, go into my kitchen and look in the fridge. Get whatever you want from it, the glasses are in the top cupboard.”

She nodded excitedly and practically skipped out of the room and into the kitchen.

A few minutes later she returned with a tiny glass of water.

“Not drinking much?”

“I... umm... umm...”

‘Wait... can she not drink before she goes to sleep... does she... okay that’s adorable!’

“It’s okay sweetie, you can drink whatever you want. Don’t worry. I’m not going to judge.”

‘It’s a good job I know a deep cleaning spell...’

We sat there in silence, the only noises were coming from the TV. She kept looking over at me, quickly looking back down when I looked her way. Taking tiny sips of water.

“You okay sweetie?” I broke the silence.

“Uh huh. Just... I’m not usually this shy, sorry.”

“It’s okay, I’m not used to having other witches over. Well, except for Lily.”

“Lily?” She looked disappointed.

“Lily is just an old friend of mine. She’s dating some human and she brings him round sometimes.”

“Oh okay.” She seemed to perk up, as I expected.

“So... what do you do here?” she asked.

“In the village? I help them out with all kinds of problems. Plants, healing, disputes, whatever they need really.”

“Oh cool! So like... what’s your affinity?”

“Nature. I have a way with plants that I’ve never seen anyone have. What about you poppet?”

“Oh umm... light. I’ve only got one, my Mum is... umm... human.”

“Aww that’s nice!” I knew how others were with things like this, so she must get a lot of nasty comments.

She smiled at me.

“Umm... I better... I better get going to bed. Sorry for keeping you up.”

“Oh sweetie, you aren’t keeping me up. And it’s really nice spending time with you. But yes, it’s late. You’re going to need some sleep if you’re hunting tomorrow!”

She put the glass of water on the table, she had barely touched it.

“I’ll be off now then...”

“Night night Ellie...”

I pushed my luck.

“Nini Rose...” her cheeks turned crimson and she quickly walked out of the room.

‘And my luck just paid off.’

Chapter 8: Accidents

“Morning ladies!” Rose gently announced.

“H... hey...” Stella was the first to come to properly. “Wh... what’s up? What time is it?”

“It’s 9am. Your friend Alex is already up. He’s been up for an hour already. Do you three want breakfast? There’s a full English on the table downstairs for each of you.”

“Really?” Stella jolted up out of bed and rushed past Rose in her pyjamas.

“I am kinda hungry...” Willow climbed out of bed and walked past Rose in her nightgown.

“And you Noelle?” Rose looked at me.

“Umm... maybe I’ll... maybe I’ll pass for now. I’ll grab mine soon...”

There was a reason I didn’t want to get up. A big, wet reason.

“Sweetie, are you okay?”

“Umm, I’m okay thanks. You can go now.”

“Is something the matter? You sound upset?”

“I just need a bit of privacy...”

“Oh. I understand.”

‘No you don’t... no one ever understands...’

“I don’t want to embarrass you... but don’t worry about the sheets.”

‘WHAT? How can she know? Can she tell? Oh god I could die right now. I need the world to open up and swallow me whole.’

“I’ll get them sorted.” She smiled at me.

“I... I don’t know what you’re talking about...” my heart was racing and I was about to start panicking.

“No need to be embarrassed with me sweetie. You can come out. I won’t judge. I figured it out when you barely drank before bed. My friend has the same problem.”

‘Friend? The witch? Or the human? Or is it someone else? Ugh why did I have to leak tonight? I even wore a pull-up to avoid exactly this!’

“Do you need assistance Ellie?”

‘There she goes again with the pet names... stop being so cute! Why when anyone else calls me ‘Ellie’ and ‘sweetie’ my rage builds up, but when she calls me them... my tummy flutters? Has my tummy ever ‘fluttered’ before? Jeez Noelle... You’re acting like some love struck teenager!’

“Well?”

“Umm... no... no thanks. I’ve got everything under control. I’ll clean everything up. Don’t worry. I’m sorry.”

“If you’re sure... well if you change your mind, just come and poke me, okay?”

“Uh huh. Thanks... sorry...”

“Shhh sweetie...” she sat down on my bed, right next to me, right next to the puddle that had formed during the night.

I started panicking.

“Umm... I’m okay... seriously...”

She put her hand on my shoulder and my heartbeat slowed down.

“Shhhhhhh...” she shushed me, gently stroking the side of my face with the back of her hand.

Her gentle voice soothed me, I started to relax and my breathing went back to normal.

“It happens sometimes. It’s no big deal. But I’ll give you your privacy and let you clean yourself up. Once you’re changed, come down for breakfast. I’m not letting you go hungry before a hunt!”

She got up off the bed and walked out. I wanted to reach out to her, I wanted her to stay, but... I needed to get out of these soaked pyjamas and clean this bed.

After quickly cleaning myself up, changing my outfit into something more appropriate to go out in, I got to work cleaning the bed. As I watched the soaked mattress slowly dry and revert to something looking brand new, I couldn’t help but think about Rose. How kind she was, how understanding, how... maternal. She wasn’t like any of the other people in my life. Tutors were always arseholes to me, often trying to act more powerful and stronger than me. The council always looked down at me, in a commanding and judgemental way. Even my friends would often look at me like I was just an annoying brat.

But Rose... it was like she was looking at me for me. For who I really am. And she wasn’t judging me or looking down at me. She wasn’t trying to appear powerful, although with her advanced casting techniques there was a possibility that she may even be more powerful than me...

She looked at me like a mother would look at a child. Like my Mum used to, before she died. But at the same time, it felt like more than that. She seemed really protective and sweet, but that flirty smile I saw her pull a few times indicated that she... no, she couldn’t like me. No one likes me.

Something about her... I wasn’t sure what was going on between us, we had only met last night after all! But I wanted to spend more time with her, so I came up with a plan.

I walked in the kitchen.

“Noelle, you look a mess! Are you okay?” Stella sounded concerned.

“I’m... I’m not feeling so good.”

“Was it something she ate?” Alex asked.

“Well we’re not sick. Maybe she’s exhausted herself again.” Willow added.

“I’ll... I’ll be okay... I’ll eat something then we’ll get out there and gather intel...”

“Noelle, I don’t think you’re in any condition to fight a greater demon. You could barely fight a squirrel in your condition!” Alex stuck out his tongue at me.

The two of them went back and forth with their ‘support’, whereas Stella kept quiet.

Rose walked into the kitchen behind me.

“Good morning Noelle, glad to see you could join us! Oh dear! Are you okay sweetie?”

She grabbed my head and started examining it.

‘Not too close, otherwise you’ll see past the illusion!’ I thought to myself.

Rose started moving her hand across my face, an inch away from my skin. She grinned at me then turned to my friends.

“Oh. I see. Sorry gang, but I don’t think she’ll be able to join you today.”

“What’s up with her?”

“She’s got a fever. Don’t worry, I have a perfect remedy. But it’ll take... a few hours to work. Why don’t you go out and get the intel you need whilst I nurse her back to health?”

‘Wait... was I actually ill?’

“I guess we could do that. It’s only intel. And we need her in fighting shape, she’s the strongest.”

“Come on then sweetie, let’s go get you back in bed and I’ll bring you your remedy.”

I nodded as she turned me around and marched me up the stairs.

As we walked down the hall, her behind me, I noticed a slight shimmer on the bare wall between two of the doors. I turned my head a bit as we walked past it.

‘That... has she got a secret room? I can see an outline...’

Before I could get a better look, she escorted me back into the guest bedroom, sitting me down on the bed and pushing me back. Pulling the duvet up, she put her palm on my forehead.

“Well that’s quite an impressive illusion little miss...”

‘Shit. She knew!’

“Just stay here, okay? I do expect some explanation when I get back with your ‘remedy’...”

I blushed and hid under the duvet as she walked out of the door, closing it behind her.

‘Do I go back down and say I’m feeling better? Do I wait and explain it to her? Do I come up with a lie? Ahhh!’

I waited in bed, hiding under the covers, for about ten minutes. During that time I heard my friends get ready to go out.

“Noelle? Get better soon! We’ll let you know if we find anything!” Stella shouted from downstairs.

I rolled over and the anxious feeling returned to my chest.

‘What am I doing? Faking illness to my friends just so I can spend some more time with this woman I don’t even know?’

The door opened.

“Here you go Ellie... your ‘remedy’... a nice relaxing cup of tea.” Rose said, walking over to the bed and setting it down next to me.

“T...thanks.”

“So... do you care to tell me why you faked being ill? Don’t you have an important mission?”

“I... I just wanted to... umm... I wasn’t feeling well... honest!”

“Sure you weren’t...”

She looked at me the same way my Mum used to look at me when I faked being sick for school. She’d still let me stay home, despite knowing full well I wasn’t really ill.

“Look, it’s none of my business, but if you want to hang around the house with me for a bit and keep me company, you’re welcome to.”

“I’d like dat... I mean that.”

‘What is wrong with you Noelle?’

I took a sip of the tea, my hands shaking a bit.

“Do you like it?” Rose asked with a smile on her gorgeous face.

‘Wow! I never usually drink tea, my diet consists of anything with a ridiculous amount of sugar in it. But this... this is good!’

“It’s... really nice. Thank you Miss.”

“Well when you’re ready, come back downstairs and keep me company. Your friends won’t be back for a while. And don’t worry, your secret is safe with me.”

She gave me that smile again and walked off. I couldn’t see my face right now, but I felt the warmth of my cheeks and could tell I was blushing.

Quickly finishing the tea off, eager to go spend time with Rose, I hopped out of bed and skipped out of the guest room. As I passed the blank wall, I could see that glimmer again...

‘What on earth is behind there? Should I have a look? Pretty sure I could unlock the glyph and gain entry, but... that would violate her trust and generosity...’

I shook my head.

‘No. Normally I wouldn’t be able to resist. But not today. I... can’t betray her trust.’

With my cup in hand, I carried on down the hallway and down the stairs. As I neared the bottom step, I saw Rose in the kitchen, sat at her little dining table.

“Oh Ellie! Come and have a seat!” She smiled at me and my tummy butterflies betrayed me once again.

“Umm... thank you.” I said, taking a seat across from her.

“So tell me more about yourself!” Rose asked as she poured more tea into my cup.

Her warm, inviting smile didn’t put me off, it actually made me want to open up to her, which I wasn’t used to. Usually when people start prying into my personal life I shut down and bunker down, refusing to open up, but she was different.

“Umm... not much to say I guess. I’m 29, I’m from Elesphia. My Dad was a witch and my Mum was a human.”

“Was?” She looked concerned.

“They... demon attack.”

“I’m sorry sweetie. You don’t have to talk about it if it hurts.”

“It’s okay. I miss them, but I’m strong, I can handle myself.”

“It’s not about being able to handle yourself, I have no doubt at all to whether or not you can, it’s about shutting yourself off and not accepting help.”

“I’m okay. I don’t need anyone.”

“Sweetie, everyone needs someone. My plants for example...”

She pointed to the plants on her kitchen wall.

“They rely on the sun and the earth, water and wind. They require the basics, very much like we do. And on their own, out in the wild, no doubt they will survive. But with my help, with my love and attention, they thrive.”

I looked down at my fingers. Something about what she had just said resonated with me, and I wanted to fight against it, to refute it and to argue... but she wasn’t wrong. Before I lost my parents, I thrived. Since I shut myself off from everyone and refused help... I was surviving.

A hand rested on mine and I suddenly withdrew, putting my hands on my lap.

“Sorry sweetie. It’s okay. How about we move on to something a bit happier? Sorry for bringing up painful memories.”

“I’m okay. But... sure.”

“How about... what hobbies do you have?”

“Hobbies?”

“Yeah, you know, video games, knitting, woodworking, gardening, writing...”

“Oh...”

“Do you not have any?”

“I mostly just sit around and watch TV or hang with my friends.”

“You should find something you can enjoy, and dedicate some time to pursuing it. It may even help you when it comes to your studies.”

“What do you do?”

“I have my gardening, I help the village, I...”

I saw the hesitation in her voice, she must have thought about something she wasn’t quite ready to tell me. Which made me want to know more.

“Go on...” I said, trying to gently push her. I wanted to know everything about her for some reason.

“I... like going for a walk occasionally.”

‘Is that it? No, she must be keeping it hidden. Maybe I shouldn’t push it...’

“So... when did you pass the test?” I asked her.

“When I was 16.”

“WHAT? HOW?” I nearly spilt my tea as I jumped back in my seat.

“I was talented, just like you. But I had the discipline and a good tutor, despite her being an arsehole.”

I hung my head in shame.

“I should have passed it like 10 years ago at least! But... These tutors are all useless and the council won’t let me even take it until I get a tutor that sticks around longer than a couple of months.”

“You’re a talented witch, Noelle, but I actually agree with the council for once. Eww. I feel dirty just saying that. But yes, you need to learn discipline and focus.”

“You sound just like them.” I rolled my eyes at her.

“Don’t even joke Ellie... I never want to be like them.” Rose looked serious.

“Really? Why? I’ve been planning on joining my whole life. From an early age people have been saying that I’d probably get a seat at some point.”

“I... don’t agree with their methods. Just... be yourself, okay? You’re a lovely person and you don’t need to turn into them.”

“So anyway...” I tried to change the subject. I wasn’t in the mood for another lecture, even though I was more likely to listen to Rose than anyone else who had tried previously.

“How about you come help me in the garden for a bit? I could do with another pair of hands!” Rose suggested.

My face lit up and I nodded excitedly. I had never tried gardening. I know the basics of alchemy and nature magic, but living in the city... I never saw the point of using it.

“Come on then. We’ll spend the afternoon in the garden, then when your friends return you can head out on your big hunt.”

She looked at me closely, as if inspecting me. She squinted her eyes and her brow furrowed.

But in an instant, she was back to her cheery self and waved at me, indicated to me that we better get started.

Chapter 9: Gardening

I watched her cute little butt shuffle over to the flower bed by the window, bending down and planting something in the ground.

“Like this?” She asked, looking up at me with that cute little smile.

“Exactly like that. Good girl!”

‘Rose... stop it! You’re pushing too quickly! Let her ease into this. If she’s the one you’ve been looking for, you need to take it slowly...’

Thankfully, to my surprise, she didn’t fight it or argue or look annoyed... she blushed.

“Now focus a bit of magic into the centre of the bulb. Just a tiny stream.”

“What kind?” she asked.

“What kind of plant do you want it to grow into? Do you want it to heal? Do you want it to be poisonous? Do you want it to strengthen? Do you want it to have a certain elemental augment?”

“Umm... could I make a light one?”

“So a bulb... bulb?” I grinned.

She giggled a bit and my heart melted.

“Yeah! What would happen if I focus some light into it?”

“It would most likely be luminescent. Just don’t put too much magic in; otherwise it’ll blind us when it blooms!”

“What else can you make the plants do?”

“Well if you channel healing magic into it, it has amazing curative properties, much more advanced than the spell that was cast into it.”

“What about augmentation magic?”

As I figured, she was genuinely interested in learning. She clearly just hadn’t had the right kind of tutor...

“Then it will boost the augment and increase the duration. Basically whatever you channel in, will be given back in multiples. The downside to using plants like this is the time it takes for them to grow. You also can’t speed up its growth and give it magical properties, otherwise the plant will die.”

“What about elemental magic, like fire?”

“Plants like that are best used for alchemical mixtures. They add the elemental properties in a way that no spell can manage on its own. But just as a plant... I guess it’d add a bit of heat to chilli?” I laughed.

Her cute little face wrinkled as she focused a tiny stream of magic from her wand into the bulb.

“That’s enough. Now sprinkle a bit of water on it, making sure not to drown it.”

As she walked over to get the watering can, I couldn’t help but imagine her in cute little dungarees and pigtails, something much... cuter than her current apparel. Sure, her little tee and torn jeans were cute, but if I got my hands on her... I could make her a lot cuter.

“What’s up?” She asked, bringing me out of my daydream.

“Nothing. Just thinking about how much fun it is to teach someone.”

She blushed, and I swear I saw a little bit of a wiggle... or maybe I was seeing what I wanted to see...

“I don’t see why I can’t just use magic to create water... why do I need to use a watering can?”

“Don’t rely on magic too much. The love and care and extra attention you give to the plants makes a huge difference, trust me.”

She finished watering her newly planted light-infused bulb and looked up at me. She was clearly proud of her achievement, very much like a toddler would be. It was adorable.

“See Ellie? Doesn’t it feel more satisfying when you do little things like that yourself?”

“I guess, yeah. I mean it would have been quicker just using magic to grow it and everything... but I can see what you mean.”

“Are you having fun?”

“Uh huh!” she nodded excitedly.

“Are you alright for a minute? I’ll go get us some drinks. It’s warm.”

“Umm...”

“What’s up sweetie?”

“The weather... the heat... is that your doing?”

“Here, yes. Outside of the village, that’d be the nearby fae folk.”

“We met one on the way here! It was a pixie.”

“Be careful with them Ellie, they can be mischevious and often harmless, but sometimes they lead strangers off the path and they never return.”

I walked off, amused at her slightly nervous face as I went to get us some drinks.

"So a greater demon huh? The council are getting bold, and cowardly, sending a bunch of newbies! I’ll have to watch out for them, I don’t want anything happening to them.”

I looked out the kitchen window to see Noelle wiping her forehead and smiling.

“Especially her.”

I went to the fridge and looked through my ingredients.

“I think she’s going to need this...”

Taking out a few things, I closed the fridge door and walked over to the blender.

“Strawberries... mango... passionfruit juice...” I blitzed them until they resembled a smoothie. Pouring this out into one glass, I put the other half of the smoothie back onto the machine and added the other ingredient.

“...and my special ingredient. That should work.”

Blending the mixture until the leaves had dissolved into the mixture, I poured it into the other glass.

“I can’t let anything happen to her. Something about her... Even if she doesn’t want what I want, I still feel like I have to protect her.”

“Here you go poppet. Enjoy.”

“What is it?”

“A fruit smoothie using fruit I’ve grown.”

“Magic infused?”

“Nope. Grown the old fashioned way.”

She licked her lips and chugged the smoothie. It surprised me how quickly she could swallow the drink. Within seconds it was gone.

“Thirsty?” I giggled.

“A bit. It’s warm!” her smile beamed back at me.

“I can change the weather if you want...”

“Nah, it’s nice. The city is cold at this time of year. We’re not allowed to change the weather there.”

“Benefits of living out here, the villagers let me change it to however best it suits me and my work. Provided I don’t suddenly cause a snow storm that freezes their gardens!”

“Do you ever let it go cold?”

“I do, around Christmas usually. And also if anyone wants a snow day, although I have to be extra careful if I do, so that not only my plants, but everyone else’s gardens don’t get ruined.”

“Well I like it this warm. Maybe I’ll come back around my birthday, so it can be nice and sunny for the first time ever on it!” she giggled and tucked her hair behind her ear.

“Your birthday is soon?”

“Yeah, start of February. It’s always cold and wet on my birthday.”

“Well you’re welcome to come back here on your birthday. I could even throw you a little birthday party!”

She looked embarrassed but... with a hint of sadness.

‘Rose... stop rushing!’

“Sorry if I said anything wrong Ellie.”

“No... it’s okay... I just... I haven’t had a birthday party in... well, years. Usually I don’t do anything. At most, we go out drinking.”

“But I thought you were some big hotshot celebrity in the city? Surely people would love to throw you parties there?”

“You’d think so... but no.”

I put my glass down and walked over to her, pulling her in for a hug.

“Oh no.. it’s ok... I... mmfff!” I silenced her resistance but pulling her head close to my chest and I stroked her head.

“Then I insist sweetie. You come back to visit me on your birthday. I’ll make you a cake and everything. Everyone deserves a birthday party.”

I half expected her to fight back, but instead she melted into my arms and embraced the affection.

I didn’t even have to soothe her.

“Oh hey... are we interrupting anything?” Stella yelled from the other end of the garden.

Her friends had gotten back. Right in the middle of us bonding.

‘Great.’

“No... no. It’s okay!” Noelle said, pushing me away from her and wiping her eyes.

‘Was she crying?’

“So, what’s up? Find anything out?” She asked them.

“We found... nothing. Like fuck all. Zero. Zilch. Diddly squat.”

“Really? What about the villagers?”

“To our knowledge, nothing has influenced them or corrupted them. Maybe we should go look further out into the forest?”

“Rose? Do you know anything about demons?” Noelle turned to ask me.

“I’ve fought a fair few in my time. Even some greater ones.” I responded.

“Could... could you help us?”

She gave me those little puppy dog eyes and I was powerless to resist...

“You want her to help us now? I thought this was our mission?” Stella pulled her aside, she obviously wasn’t happy.

“We need help. We’ve never faced a Demon Lord before.”

“Look at you being all sensible for once!” she teased Noelle.

“Guys, it’s okay. Between the four of you, you’ll manage. And I’ll be here if you need help, okay?” I tried to calm them all down, and it was probably best that I stayed back.

Noelle nodded, happy that I was willing to help.

“I... I think you should check the forest. I’ve noticed some irregular weather patterns in the nearby woods. Maybe that’s a good place to start?” I suggested.

“Really? Thanks for the info. Noelle, get ready and meet us at the bottom of the hill okay? Be ready for a fight in case we come across it.” Stella looked serious.

Noelle nodded her head, appearing like the confident woman I had seen on the news. Her friends headed off down the hill, looking exhausted, whilst Noelle walked back into the house to change her outfit and prepare herself.

I wanted to have a word with her so I quickly followed her.

As I walked down the landing, I saw the glimmer of the hidden doorway and wondered if she could see it.

‘She does have an impressive talent to spot illusions and hidden objects, I can tell. I’ll have to keep an eye on that.’

I knocked on the guest room door.

“Noelle? Can I come in?”

“Yeah, it’s okay, just getting ready.”

I opened the door to see the confident, attractive witch I had seen plastered over magazine covers. She had changed from her casual clothes into something much more appropriate for a witch to wear. Gone were the torn jeans, instead she opted for a black skirt and a frilly blouse.

‘Does she realise just how childish that top makes her look? Good job the robe makes her appear more adult!’ I thought to myself, smiling at her cuteness.

“Do I look okay?” She asked.

“You look gor... you look perfect sweetie. Now, are you ready? A Demon Lord is no easy fight.”

“I think so. And you’re here if we need you... right?”

Again with the puppy dog eyes.

“Of course. Just send a light missile into the sky and I’ll come running. I understand that you want to do this on your own. You want to prove yourself to the council. Just... don’t do anything risky, okay?”

“I won’t.”

She ran over and hugged me.

I hugged her back.

“Oh sweetie, what’s this for?”

“I dunno... I... just felt like I needed to.”

“Well I’m not going to complain, but your friends are waiting. You better be off. Don’t forget your hat!” I said, grabbing her hat from her bed and putting it on her head.

She pulled away from me and smiled.

“Good luck Ellie."

I watched out the window as she skipped off down the hill to meet her friends.

Throwing my robe on and grabbing my broom and my hat, I left my house and stood watch outside my front door.

I felt Jinx rub up against my leg.

“Hey Jinx. What’s up?”

“Meow.”

“I agree. Tonight could spell disaster. We have to be extra careful.”

“Meow!”

“What? I want to make sure all of them are okay, not just Noelle. Anyway, what are you talking about? You’ve been gone all day!”

“Meow.”

“You’ve been hiding? The entire time? Seriously Jinx? Have you been spying on me?”

“Meow.”

“Keep it to yourself. She... she’s something special, okay? I don’t know if she’ll ever want me that way, or any way for that matter, but something about her... just trust me okay?”

“Meow.”

“I know! God, you’re worse than my mother.”

“Meow.”

“Jinx, go on ahead and be ready okay?”

“Meow...”

“I better be prepared..."

New chapters every Wednesday/Sunday!

It's weird not having much to edit or write or anything now that I'm down to just two chapters of Witch in Training per week and no Little in Love, especially as this story gets less comments than LiL because it's got early access on Patreon, so most people who comment are ahead. But I've been doing a bit of research for my next story and hope to start writing that soon! (Not familiar with the genre as well as I am with Witches and the DD, but always had an interest in it, so a bit nervous as to starting it yet. Plus I've got a poll going on patreon to name one character so waiting for that to finish before I start.) Once I've got a bit of a backlog of chapters, I'll start posting it and then it'll be four chapters per week!

I hope people continue to enjoy this story!

I find the story very beautiful.

You realize that Noelle needs all this and Elli can and will be a much better teacher for her than anyone else.

I am really curious what will happen and especially what the council has in mind.

This story gets better and better. At first it seemed a bit trope-y, but now it’s really hard to predict. Of course we can easily guess how it is going to end up for Rose and Ellie (Noelle seems unlikely to insist on her city name for long), but the twists on the way there are not obvious at all.
