On the news it looked like one person on a ventilator had a diaper on.  I would assume that if your on one, you cannot get up, so most people would be wearing one or a catheter?

When I was in C/ICU the first 3 days after surgery, I had a cath in me then in "step-down" I had to use a urinal, which, if you are not carful can get pretty messy and after awhile it has to be emptied. For #2 I had to call a nurse to escort me to the bathroom because all the stuff I was ooked up to had be be brought along but it was on a rack with casters. So, if you are immobile, a diaper would be in order for #2 so you might as well throw #1 in too rather than do a separate process, However you would probably be being fed via IV (I wonder what it would be like to mainline pizza and beer) or stomach tube (when I was in the nursing facility,, my roomie had been fed through a stomach tube all his life and he was about 50 and was in diapers 24/7 and did not have many of his marbles), so whatever came out of you would be a liquid and not much of that,

At the time of my brief experience on a ventilator, I had also been catheterised.  I enjoyed neither experience.

To be honest, only have one fleeting memory of the ventilator.  I remember a panic sensation because I woke up and tried to inhale when the machine was in exhalation mode.  Somebody said something and the lights went out again.

It wasn't fun in any way.

if you are on a ventilator you are usually iv fluids and if needed glucose, so you only really need a cath, as you will normally be totally sedated any other problems such as the odd bowel motion would be taken care of by the nurses and you wouldn't be aware it had happened unless you got to look at your bedside notes.

I've heard of some hospitals and nursing homes just putting chux pads under bedridden/ unconscious or comatose patients for bowel movements.

Most people would wear a catheter 
Its cheaper, easier and the nurses can see if you pee and how much you pee, and if its wrong color, they can see if its something wrong with you

ventilators are the worst, feels like a horsecock shoved down your throat and it never seemed to coincide with my natural breathing,  I was awake 3 hours with this piece of crap down my throat and fought for every single breathe, terrible experience.

Saw the same pic, it was taken in Italy I think? I could see how they aren't able cath patients due workload, short staffing, and would opt for dips. In all seriousness this disease has me terrified.

I woke up too soon after surgery on a ventilator. It was not a fun experience. Imagine deep throating a horse cock like mentioned above. I could hear everything around me but couldn't see while I intensely gagged throuout the entire experience. I'm pretty sure I was cathed during the ordeal though.

I was able to raise my arm to indicate that I was conscious.  There were people talking around me.  Somebody said something reassuring to me and called some kind of dose and then the lights went back out.  I was happy for that.  It was the same deal, I was trying to breathe on my own but was out of sync with the machine.  I only found out I was cathed later.

Yeah, I slammed my arm down numerous times to let the know I was aware.I was in and out numerous times. It was a very unique experience. The aneteiologist told my wife I was a bear.
