Although I have tons of specialists and a GP none have ever asked about my IC , they know I see a urologist and therefore they stay out of my genitourinary affairs,probably because the more they know the more they have to document and nobody wants to volunteer to do paperwork. I must say it's fun though when I have a substitute urologist ( mine is sometimes doing an emergency surgery) and they ask me how many times I get up at night,they are always surprised when I say none,I just wet myself about then they find the part of my chart were the doc has been prescribing my diapers for the last 17 years. You most definitely can atrophy your bladder, long term use of a foley or routine daily use of an intermittent catheter will do it, my Urologist has me cathing 5 X's a day ,because of a really large bladder , IC and the inability to completely void , even after urinating my Bladder can still hold 900 to 1100 ML'S. If you work to shrink your bladder it will shrink and atrophy however if you start holding it because you are busy with something else ,you can undo a years worth of shrinking in under a week by just holding it, my Urologists goal with me is to have a bladder that at most can retain 50 ML, it will certainly reduce the problem of flooding diapers and beds,and also reduce the resting pressure of my bladder to preserve kidney function as I am a T 1 diabetic , it's easier for me to tell a doctor what's not wrong with me than to start the long list of health problems. I have had the same Urologist for 17 years which is a record, I am pretty hard on Doctors because my health is so comlicated,every intervention they plan has to really be well thought out so as to not make another condition worse. But I can stand witness to a shrinking bladder because I am doing it daily, I do not have the ability to hold it , so it will not gain back capacity, the good thing about that is diapers last longer when you are constantly peeing small amounts, instead of opening a firehose valve. For me being IC for such a long time ,having an accident is rare because an accident to me means I did not wear proper protection , my worst accident is when I have a seizure and defecate,because that is normally not an issue for me , but I can't really complain because when it does happen I am diapered due to my Bladder anyway so nothing gets ruined, I just have a mess to clean up. I have major sleep disorders as well so at night I wear a super heavy weight nite diaper boosted 3 X's because I can be awake four or five nights until I totally crash and sleep 16-20 continously so I have to wear enough protection to cover that , without wetting the bed. Tranquility are the top of the line in entry level Medical a case of them is under $100 shipped , they are about $1.00 per diaper start with them , if you want thicker padding cut some slots in the first one and then put one on over it ,can't beat the ease of getting, UPS delivers then when you run out go with Abena's and keep buying and trying till you are completely happy with something, there used to a restaurant called "old chicagos" they had a "world beer tour", you need a world diaper tour ! BabyBuck you may want to find someone near you who does get diapers regularly and see if they will order some on your behalf, it's cheaper than ordering samples all the time or trying to hide a bunch from family or "stalk the mailman". Yes finding a workable product out of your choices is going to be a challenge and even with a prescription you will most likely have to add some money from your budget to buy a diaper that works for periods that you work or travel and access to a place to change will be limited. I don't know if you tried them but the Attends products have been steadly getting better ever since paper pak sold the brand off to focus on there Always line and not compete with themselves in a very crowded marketplace segment, I was recently in the hospital for a stroke and wore them , my G/F has MS and no matter what better product I introduce to her she prefers the fit of Attends and continues to switch back to them time and time again.
