According to all the dictionaries I've consulted, stat is an english word whose etymology is an abbreviation of a latin work statim, so in english, stat is not an abbreviation. It just means quickly. Statism, by the way, is a political system in which the state has substantial centralized control over social and economic affairs. Link to comment
