Car Accidents

Recommended Posts

A lot of the younger people who suffer incontinence that I know aquired it as a result of a car accident. How common is incontinence as a result of car accidents?

I know there are some people here who got incontinence as a result of car accident, and I do not mean to draw attention to any of you, I am just curious. And what sort of injury actually causes it?

Car accidents kill outright roughly 40,000 people in the US. If you are under 40, (or was that 30?) it is the leading cause of death. I think it's in the 100,000s per year that get seriously injured. Now, for the wild guesses: At least 10% of those injuries result in incontinence, at least temporarily.

How is incontinence caused?

a) Sufficiently severe brain injury. A gal I knew slightly hit her head on the way through a sunroof, and came home in diapers and a wheelchair. A year or two later, she was still dragging the left side of her body around. I wasn't close enough to know if she was continent or not.

B) A blow to the bladder, quite possibly through a seatbelt. These probably heal the best.

c) A blow to the spine, or other nerve damage. These probably heal at best slightly. Certainly, any kind of lower body paralysis probably brings incontinence with it.

Spinal cord injuries with following paralysis usually leads to some sort of continence issues. Not necesarily ones that require nappies, but usually they will require some sort of management routine. The nerves that control anal sphincter and bladder functions are located in the lowest part of the spine, so generally no matter where you are injured, if it's severe enough to called complete injury, you will have continence problems. Actually, one way to determine if an injury is complete or incomplete is to put a finger in the injured persons rectum, if sphincter activity is present, the injury is incomplete and the outlook for recovery partial or complete, suddently looks much better, if no activity, outlook for major recovery of lost muscle function and sensation is very bad.

Spinal cord injury at T7/8 from car accident I went fro the windshield of my truck as one A## overtook a second truck in to my line.

Gotta love assholes, eh.

I almost wiped out in the rain when one pulled out in front of me. In an act of cruel irony, after SMASHING through a curb (man, that sure did fuck up my alignment), I LANDED underneath the sign for an auto body and collision repair shop.

mine is due to a car wreck, i was only 4 when i went through the wind shield of a pick up, it caused brain damage. mostly dormant through the younger years, as the teen years came i began feeling weird, and having accidents,,, it went away again,, then when i was 35,, some strange shit began to happen, and the incontinence showed its ugly head.

stress, and sleep deprivation brought on siezures in the temprel lobes. witch brough on the wetting, and messing accidents.

i had the electrode implants in my sinuses connected to the lobes,,, it was really strange when it took,, i was all messed up from the right, and left sides of the brain working like they should,,lol

my bladder, and bowell muscles imedietly contracted, and i was totaly incontinent. they deadened the nerves that controll these,, the bowell that was forced out was stitched back in, and now im in therapy.so 38 years later im incontinent, limp, and probably no better off.

went to see a specialist last week aout getting the incontinance under controll,, she said come , and see me in 12 to 14 months, and shell take a look at it then,, now is not the time.

shit,, i hate doctors

I have to admit this is a topic that i thought about quite a bit seeing the main cause of all this that I've seen. I mean, it kind of sucks. The other day I saw something that mentioned that airplanes are the safest way to travel and I was like 'whaat?' because there are so many people afraid of planes. It's a bit unnerving, but some of the views you see in a good storm puts the fear of dying into dormancy with some of the things Ive seen in planes, I would love that to be the last thing I see. lol. But other than that, I could never imagine having incontinents since after about 4 days wearing diaper strait I get so pissed off at them and end up hating them for a month where I repeat (ever common binge purge cycle), but now I just wear at night time sometimes. 3 months strait and I still have trouble wetting while laying down how messed up is that. Ironic how some of us strive for it, and others have it and hate it. I know that I would definately hate it.

I lost part of my bladder due to the fact that the car seat and the stearing wheel pined me down and damage my bladder and some nerves. My bladder rumptered and infection was the cause of the removal of part of my bladder and spincter. I have 100% anal control unless i have diarrhea but that is like most people for control. I have about 5% control of my bladder. Strange is if I lay down on my back and side I have a little more control and if I have an erection I have about %50 control. I can lay in bed with out protection and be fine until I get up and boom I lost control. they say that I can get surgery to give me contince but I will have to use a catheter everytime I need to go I told them no I will just stick with my diapers. I am use to them now 20 years latter and whould hate to change my situation. I love the fact that I can go on long trips with out having to stop heck I have to stop more for my car to fill it full of gas than I have to stop to change. I look at the positive side of things. I tell my friends that drive with me that just tell me when you need to go and I will pull over. Or I can work strate 6 hours on my computer with out having to go to the bathroom. I think I am more productive with my incontince.

I was left incontinent after a head on collision. I had damage at L5/S1 as well as a ruptured bladder fromt he seat belt. The doc's wanted me to get a urostomy but I think diapers are easier to lead an active life with than a bag.

Although I'm relatively new on this site I'll give my experiences. Eight years ago while passing a semi-truck who was in the right lane (I was in the left), I ended up in an accident where my car was sandwhiched between the tractor and trailer when it jackknifed. Emergency personal had to cut a section of my car apart to get me out. Luckily I only have incontinence to deal with, as it could have been much worse. My injuries were a broken collarbone, a concussion from hitting my head on the driver side window, and damaged nerves along the path from my brain to my bladder. Due to the damaged nerves I have urge incontinence, unlike some cases, I know when I have to use the restroom, but I'm not able to make it there in time before going. Frequency of going really hasn't changed, and I have full control of my bowels. So, for the last eight years I've had to wear an incontinence product of some sort 24/7. Just thought I'd share my experience, and if there is any humor in this, the truck involved in the accident...that company was a competitor to the trucking company that I work for.

Were you compensated for that accident Audrey?

Edit: How fast were you going while passing?

When I pass I hate being next to them things after hearing a few stories, from my mother and brother, aswell as a few other people, I usually pass at 75 to 100 if the PSL is 60 to 75 (I come up to the rear of their trailer, where they still can see me and signal, then punch it..)

I was in an "altercation" and was knifed in the bladder area (among other areas) and received cuts in some muscles and nerves around my bladder. That's the price I pay for being a stupid kid. I need to look on the bright side... one of my friends was stabbed in the heart and killed and my lung was nearly missed (I found out many years later). And the guy who did it walked out on a legal technicality (something like the prosecutor filed the wrong form), so that's life.

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention, while not a car accident in the classic sense, the fight was what kids fight over (car(s), money, and girl(s))

Cheers,

DP

Looking at this subject from a different viewpoint I wonder how many motorists have car accidents because they are so desperate to pee they can't concentrate on driving properly.

Hey DP, If I were in that situation I would personally find the guy and shoot him in every single organ, except major ones like the heart and brain, so he can suffer for three hours before passing away.

It sounds like he was hooked up though, because they just do not let murderers walk.

You're tellin' me... after his case was tossed the first time, the DA wouldn't charge him again due to "lack of evidence." Hmmm, let's see, we got a dead 16 year old football star and I'm pissing all over myself... yeah, he was hooked up. However, one of the things I like to see on this forum is that we all have our demons and we are all here alive to talk about it. People like I.Jennifer myself and others have been handed some unfortunate circumstances in life, but we're here to look on the bright side and share experiences with others... even get a laugh or two in the process. My one big laugh is when I was playing football my last 2 years of highschool, that wasn't just sweat all over my pants ;-) Good thing they were black!!1!!one!eleventy!!one
