Bettypooh
I need some advice with an older US Ford AOD transmission. With our diverse membership I figured it was worth asking about here even if you can only point me to good advice elsewhere! Link to comment
AwakenEvil
Yuck. FORD AOD are junk! I had one in my old mustang, and it was a slush box. Are you looking at getting it built? Link to comment
Bettypooh
No- I'm looking to rebuild it myself I've done others, just not this kind. To have someone else do it would cost 5-6 times what the parts cost so I can't go there or I would. I used to be that person making out like a bandit but that's been long, long ago Hence my request Bettypooh Link to comment
AwakenEvil
Rebuilding an auto is brain surgery! Manual wouldn't be terrible. Almost easier to ship off for repair. What quotes are you getting for the rebuild kit? I know Jegs sells a new one without a core for 1500.00 shipped Link to comment
Bettypooh
As far as normally wearing parts, new everything except the T/C is $168; the T/C is about the same and I can swap it later if I really have to which I shouldn't. Jegs is good stuff but now you can see why I'd rather DIY- a 90% discount Bettypooh Link to comment
AwakenEvil
I am sure I can find some videos or info how to rebuilt it on mustang forums. Link to comment
beallucanb
If you fried the trans, I would spring for another converter, but if its still working decently just empty out as much fluid then flush it out as good as you can with a few quarts of cheap fluid. I used to pull my automatic transmissions then take them to a guy I know, but over the years he thought me to make in car repairs when a trans was savable. All my transmission experience was before the event of the OD transmissions. Good luck with your ford. Link to comment
Bettypooh
Thanks folks It's either fried clutches or bands, not certain which but I know the symptoms and how it happened. My own fault really but that's where I am. It's high-mileage anyway so ain't gonna try to patch it, it's all new or nothing Bettypooh- a shiftless character Link to comment
AwakenEvil
time to upgrade that monster to a MT82 6SP! Link to comment
Bettypooh
As maligned as this tranny is by the hot-rodders, it did very well for me. It's not a performance trans at all, but given a level of torque it can handle it is as good as any other of it's vintage Ten years and 200K miles trouble-free with maximum highway fuel mileage is all I could ask for from any A/T and I got that. It's worth a rebuild. Ain't worth doing any more than that for a 30+ year old vehicle with no collectors value. Bettypooh Link to comment
ruuuuuuuuu1
or is it a clogged trans filter or metal particles around electrically controlled solenoids, that is a issue with that trans Link to comment
Bettypooh
Nope, it got burned up by me trying to get unstuck in the mud. Nothing simple or easy to fix this time, you can smell the clutch or band material as well as the very burnt fluid It was well overheated when it died and wasn't any better after it cooled. I'm not sure mine has a cable- I know it has a solid linkage rod. Maybe something got disconnected or dislodged but I kind of doubt it as the slippage came on sort of gradually, not all at once. I will check, thanks for the reminder Today's task is to get running wheels of some kind under me again and I have a couple ways to make that happen, but this project is still on until further notice Bettypooh Link to comment

Those AOD trans prefer you drive like grandma, although I never had any problems with my 1987 Taurus. As with any piece of machinery, someone put that together, if you can use tools, stay organized, understand the mechanics, and above all else. Take pictures!!!!!! Good luck, you'll have that running again. Link to comment
Diapered Jason
Probably better off buying Link to comment
Bettypooh
Most RWD A/T's need less than $250 in parts for a full rebuild; mine is $168. I can't buy a car for that but it can fix the one I've got Bettypooh 1 Link to comment
Diapered Jason
Oh, my thoughts were on if you were having somebody else do the job. That sounds like a fun job. Hope it works for you soon then. Link to comment
Bettypooh
I can't pay somebody $1200+ just to get (very) dirty if I can do this myself. Which I'm pretty sure I can I've got wheels under me again for as long as they will last, Link to comment
Bettypooh
I very much appreciate everyone's help here But I won't need it anymore. The old beast of burden is going forever out to pasture now. I have just accepted an offer to buy a very similar set of wheels which is much better in every way with absurdly low mileage (and it's for real) for an even more absurdly low price. Nice to have friends like that Bettypooh Link to comment
Jamesy
Dang Betty, I has hoping you would surface as the winner in this transmission war series. I know getting your hands dirty wouldn't bother you. Congratulation on finding a new set of wheels. Regards, Jim Link to comment

Diapered Jason
Probably for the best anyway. My car Link to comment
redneck diaper boy
You are very talented if yo can rebuild an automatic transmission. The parts for a domestic vehicle a probably less expensive than their foreign counterparts. Link to comment
repetitivediaperwetter88
automatic transmissions are a pain. Link to comment
