35 years ago "addict" referred to "chemically originated dependence". Behavior was referred to as "habit" which, if you wanted to, by learning a few principles of behavior, you could break Since Psychology became a racket after the revisionism in 1978, "Addiction" came to referes to a strongly set in behavior. In the mid 1970's I was being told by some pretty up there folks that "addiction" was an invalid term for things that the government didn't like. Now that habit and chemical dependence have been mooshed together, I see that those who told me this in the mid '70's were correct. "Addiction" is now an empty term

"Addiction" is a loaded word, filled with judgement. As Christine said,it's a way of imposing one's political agenda, or of saying "we don't like what you're doing, so we're going to force you to stop in the name of helping you." It's a word that immediately raises my blood pressure, as I've had counselors accuse me of having a "sex addiction" just because I like to wear diapers. I think the word only truly applies if you're harming yourself or other people with what you're doing.
