Certain people have trepidations about divulging this fetish to loved ones but what makes enjoying nappies less socially acceptable then other fetishes?

In relates to children. To an untrained eye it can be seen as an instance of pedophilia. I've had a friend make that connection, and I sort of went off on her. She our lifestyle much better now.

It has a lot to do with the number of pedophiles, wankers and just plain sickos who we allow to be part of this community. There are many people out there doing rude, tasteless and just plain wrong things to get public attention... and it needs to stop. The longer we let these people behave the way they do, the harder it is going to be to find acceptance within other fetish communities and the outside world.

Well our public exposure tends to be from 350 lb men wearing either nothing but a diaper, or an over the top sissy sporting a hello kitty shirt and frilly Victorian style dress; this may have something to do with it. I don't think the craigslist guy helped our cause either. We get little positive publicity.

It also has to do with the fact most of the world still considers sex to be taboo, fetishes even more so.  Combine this with TRUCKLOADS of close-minded ignorant people who cannot see beyond standard sex and think nothing else exists, and you got a formula for a negative opinion. 

It's not just diapers that get a bad rep. I think the only accepted fetishes are things such as feet, panties, stockings, and other things of the sort.

No offense... but you have no idea. There is plenty of public acceptance of BDSM and related activities... but even many of the BDSM folks hate us. From what I have experienced there are 3 primary causes of this.

#1: Ignorance and Miseducation. The AB/DL community doesn't have many members who act as teachers to the outside world... so people are left to draw conclusions from whatever fragmented bits of information that they can find, most of which is bad. Take this site for example... it is easily accessible by outsiders. You read two or three intelligent threads on relevant topics, then you get to the "I like to shit myself and walk around in public." part. If you were an outsider, what conclusion would you draw?

#2: Lack of leadership. The AB/DL community doesn't have any well known and respected leaders to help us organize and adopt rules and standards.

#3: Extremists. Because we lack rules and standards there is a percentage of the community that take things way too far. These are the people who cause the negative information to be generated in the first place. Since there are no leaders to stand up to them they run amok willy-nilly and do whatever they please... giving us all a bad rap by association.

IMO it's pretty obvious why it's looked down upon. I've met a lot of people in the ABDL world who are just plain WEIRD. Then again I've met a few who are shockingly normal (teachers, police officers, etc). However the "normal" ones are the ones who keep it to themselves, whereas the freako weirdos are the ones who are typically flamboyant about their fetish. If I encountered ANYONE like the freaks I've met through the DL world, I'd look down on it too.

Thing is if we look thru history sexuality is one of those things that people dont really want to talk about. Think a hundred yrs ago and look at what they wore and how closed things were. Heck they tried to ban porn. It has taken many years for the Gay & Lesbian community to be as accepted as it is now. Personally its no where i think it can go, its still something that people still do not accept yet now we have employers that will ofter healthcare for their partner, this was unheard of 30 yrs ago. As for the BDSM community it is only just starting to be a bit more accepted as people start to get in it, but the vast majority of their activity is hidden behind closed doors in the bedroom.

The last general election I voted in, I searched high and low for a AB/DL commander box. I just couldn't find the darned thing. Maybe the president can appoint a a diaper czar.

I think the reasons people are uncomfortable with this fetish is based on their own potty training. If you haven't gone in your pants in 20 years you might not comfortable with the idea of just doing it. most people are not aware of us as a community let alone those who "run amok willy-nilly and do whatever they please"

Diapers, on the other hand, from an outside perspective, are indeed vary strange and slightly morally wrong. And I can understand the connecton to sexual child molestation. Diapers have an innate relation to babies. It's just the way it is and won't ever change.

I feel like I repeat myself way to much, but being a guy who just wears for the comfort and 'sometimes' sexual stimulation, I do not want to be know as a Diaper Lover to anyone.

It's a private and personal taboo of mine, and the thought of others finding out is so unnerving, I would probably wanna crawl under a rock and die if someone did find out.

Ya know... it's funny. I have a fiancee that wears (and uses) diapers for convenience and fun. I don't consider her an oddball freak. I think some people are just jealous because they can't accept AB/DL as a part of who they are... so they fight with it and try to convince themselves that it is somehow immoral and wrong. The more you fight with it the more you are going to be reminded of it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with practicing regressive behaviors in private behind closed doors.
