Weekly Writing Challenge

Recommended Posts

Hey!

Would any other DD writers be up for a weekly writing challenge?

I was thinking of putting together something similar to DeviantArt’s Kinktober where there is a different prompt every day for the month of October. Except that we would make it an ongoing weekly thing. No prizes or competition, just a way to get some interesting short stories posted each week as veteran writers stretch themselves and new writers have an opportunity to try writing without the pressure of creating a new story post on their own.

Here’s how it would work:

1. Each week we select a new word. (I was thinking about having people suggest words/scenarios/tags/etc and then using a random number generator each week to select one.)

2. I'll create a new post each week with the new word and post on a certain day each week. Anyone that wants to join has 7 days to write a short story using the word/prompt and submit it as a comment on the post so that we keep them all in the same place.

3. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Pretty straightforward.

So, we might have words that match up to the tags here like: spanking, highchair, or accident.
Or scenarios: diaper dimension, lost bet, roommates
Or completely random words like: banana, hiccup, south
Or even genres: mystery, western, romance

I want to stretch myself as a writer and thought this would be a fun way to do it. If this needs to be somewhere else or I need approval or something, please let me know. I’ve browsed this board for years, but only recently started posting and this is the only forum I ever read.

If we can get a few people on board, I’ll get the first one started and ready for the weekend and we can get to work. If you want in, drop a comment below and let me know!

Interesting concept, but you're pretty much excluding most participants right out of the gate.  A lot of us barely have time to write day-to-day, though we try.  Maybe a monthly topic could hook people, but weekly is a bit much.  Personally, I'm trying to break off years of rust, so I can't say as I'd be an active participant even if you did it on an annual basis, but if it's just flash-fiction type stuff, I'd probably jump in from time to time on a monthly cycle, when my muse struck me.

It might be a good forum for people trying to get their feet wet, but personally I'm in the same spot as WBDaddy-- there just aren't enough hours in the day.

That's my problem.  I got a bug in my ear this morning that made me think about writing, but I had that work thing to do.  I'm home and I haven't been able to write.

I'm usually so tired by the end of the day I can write much fiction

That makes total sense. A bit of rookie enthusiasm over here on my end.

Flash fiction is definitely what I'm thinking here, somewhere around 1500 words? I'm working on an anthology of short stories right now and that feels about right.

Maybe monthly is the way to go.

It would be an interesting exercise, and I would try to participate, but I agree with the feedback that weekly is too frequent, and sometimes what I would be able to contribute would be very short, more of a diaper haiku than a diaper story. But it is a great way to stretch those muscles.

Its an interesting concept, and certainly has appeal. But an on-going weekly thing is just something I don't have time to participate in with any regularity. Hell, I can barely find the time/ motivation for my own regular writing.  It sounds like a lot of fun, but I sadly just don't have the time for it.

Since it's not a contest and there aren't any prizes beyond having written something that might not have been written otherwise there's maybe some room for flexibility. I want to say go for weekly, but I know that realistically I'd feel overwhelmed. But we could do monthly, and pull from that original inspiration of kinktober and post a list each month. But not an ink/kinktober list of a word prompt for every day. Something like what was shown in the original post above. They could be divided up into categories something like this:

Monthly Writing Challenge for Octembuary
Use one or more of the following:

Scenarios: Camping, Company Mergers
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Props: Onesies, plush toys other than animals
Random word prompts: punch card, traffic, oval

Please reply to this thread with a link to anything you write to these prompts along with the title, whether it is complete, the finished or expected finished size, and any other brief details you'd like to include

Micro: 100 words or less
Flash/short-short 100-1000 words
Short story: 1000-7500
Novelette/Novella: 7500-50,000
Send Help I Started A Series: anything you expect to come out even longer

And it's not a contest and nothing other than word count is on the line, so if someone doesn't include a title or says Short Story when it's only a ninety word vignette that's complete and won't be expanded... None of us are the diaper story police. Something was written and shared and that's what matters. And if someone somehow finds the time and energy to write a separate novella for each individual prompt? Dear lord, how‽ But someone does manage it, same thing, they got more practice and everyone else gets more potential stories to read. Same if it's not a traditional story but some kind of non-story fiction like an ad for some imagined product or a review of a movie from the Diaper Dimension? Same answer.

If we're going to do this then we should pitch in some suggested prompts to @blahblahwriterso they aren't stuck trying to come up with all of them.

Okay. I'm going to launch a monthly Flash Fiction Challenge over the weekend and we'll just see how it goes for a few months. Hopefully once we get it rolling, we can continue to peak some interest and get new people on board. There aren't really any rules as far as length or anything else, we'll just have to use the monthly prompt somewhere in the story.

Now, I'll need some word ideas to kick off our first month. I'll number them chronologically starting after this post and put them into a random number generator.

List as many as you want in the comments below and I'll make a new post with the word and prompt sometime this weekend.
