i always thought a bowl's worth was a cup(8 ounces), same as with beef stew..... is chili a form of stew?

Some web searching leads me to find that a bowl of chili ranges from 1 to 2 cups (8-16 oz. or 250-500 grams). 

The only place you should find a Dixie cup serving of chili is at a chili tasting event.

See, that's too big a range. If I get 8oz I'm going to be disappointed and if I get 16oz I'd be pleased. 8oz sounds more like a cup to me. Literally a cup in US measurements.

I agree. A bowl should 12oz or more. A cup should be 8-12oz.

Many of the servings I saw were around 12oz.

Technically, a toilet is a bowl.  A toilet bowl.  That would hold a lot of chili, both before being eaten and for sure afterwards.
