Yearly physical

Recommended Posts

I have been urinary incontinent for about 10 years now. I know that it is caused due to nerve problems in my spine. I have a lot of back problems and have had two doctor suggest that that is most likely the cause. I have been referred to two urology doctors but have declined. I try to avoid the doctors office but have been going every 6 months or so for issues with high blood pressure and a mild arrhythmia and heart thickening. I have mentioned my urinary incontinence twice now during my check ups for my heart. Thankfully the doctor has been able to get my blood pressure down to fairly normal over the last year or so but now we are about to start our normal yearly physical check ups because I am an established patient. I have never once had a physical or any kind of examination down there, and now that I am incontinent I am afraid of how to proceed with that. What do I wear? What do I say? I normally wear plastic back BetteryDry briefs… do I wear that or something else… if they ask me to disrobe do I remove the brief and risk leaking or mention wearing briefs and see what they recommend? Do they get patients regularly with this problem? How do they normally handle it if so…? I’m a 36 year old male and both times I brought up my incontinence during my heart visits the doctor seemed surprised. I’m worried they will be surprised again when I bring things up during the physical… is my incontinence not normal?

Spending time on this forum has definitely made me feel like I am not alone overall but the doctors office just feels like a whole new level.

I'm kept diapered 24/7 and diapered permanently. All my doctors know I wear diapers and they know I have a diaper bag with me as well

Wear your diaper during your appointment and don't worry about it.  You would be surprised how many patients wear diapers.  Doctors are used to ut.

Your doctor should ask about your incontinence as it is part of your medical profile.  He may ask you to lower or untape your diaper if he checks your testicles.  The diaper will need to be untaped or lowered if he performs a prostate check (via a lubricated gloved finger inserted up your anus to feel your prostate).

It is a good idea to carry an extra diaper with you to the examination in case you are unable to retape the orginal diaper after one of the procedures above.  I sometimes wear a good quality pullup to the exam for the convenience of pulling it down and back up.  When I do that I try to pee in the restroom just prior to my appointment.

I'm double incontinent and have found all my doctors to be very accepting and helpful.  I  hope yours are the same.  Good luck.

Thank you. Just knowing others go through the same issues makes it so much easier.

Thank you for the details. The details are what will make the visit easier for sure. I have about two months before my physical so I will let you all know how it goes after the fact. The pull ups and extra supplies are a great idea for sure… I’m glad to know that wearing a pad/diaper is nothing out of the ordinary.

Do they call them pads or briefs or diapers at the doctors office?

I will be getting a physical and a prostate exams as far as I know. So, thank you for the info. I guess I will stick to my usual BetterDry’s and just go by what they say.

Since becoming incontinent I have come to enjoy diapers but have 0 interest in involving others in this which is why I’m so fearful of the doctors office.

My doctor never mentions my incontinence but the diabetic nurse always asks if I am still managing my incontinence ok. Last year I had physio on my knee. I was wearing a tena maxi slip, net fixing pants and plastic pants as usual. Nothing was said.

@Destined123, you're boldly going where I have largely not gone before, and I am curious as to what your experience will be. I believe what others have said here about doctors and their staff having seen essentially everything, and that while some surprise at a guy your age dealing with incontinence would not be unexpected, it will not rise to the level of shock and awe, or, suspicion. In any case case, my doctor works for me, I don't work for him, and he can suggest anything he likes, but it is entirely my choice whether or not I want to go down any particular diagnostic pathway.

I've been to several doctor's appointments in diapers now, but most of them did not involve any in-trouser work, so it was a non-issue for me, other than some low-level anxiety about them springing an unexpected below-the-belt inquiry. The couple of exceptions to that went thusly: in the first example, I was given an opportunity to undress and put a gown on before being examined, so I folded up my diaper and put it under my pants and white-knuckled the flight, which was easy for me because I have good control. In the second example, I had mercifully switched to a crappy but anonymous grey man pull-up right before the appointment, because it was with a urologist that I had never seen before, and I didn't know what he might want to see or do. It turned out that my caution was warranted, because he immediately asked me to partially disrobe, and, he had a resident with him. With some discomfort, I pulled my pants and my pull-up down, and he did what he needed to, and didn't even blink about the pull-up, let alone mention it. And, that was a urologist, I will again point out - my being in protective underpants was in theory in his lane, and even he didn't ask about it. SO, I assume that if I went to see, say, a proctologist about hemorrhoids, that he or she wouldn't even ask why I had a diaper on. I'd probably refrain from wearing something with a glorious print on it, to lower the eyebrow-raising factor a bit.

If I were you, I'd probably phrase the question in terms of what your preferences are, rather than what their "rules" are. I'd put on a fresh diaper as soon as I could before the appointment, for everyone's sake, and then I'd say (with great confidence, since I'd be saying it with your voice...), "If you don't mind, I'd prefer to leave my diaper on for the moment." Presumably, they'll understand the why of that.

In my case, I am incontinent, adult baby and all my medical staff know that I wear diapers all the time, They even let me come in just a diaper, t-shirt dress or onesie with a skirt on. They also know my adult baby side and know being an adult baby helps cope and deal with being incontinent. Many times, when I am at my doctors appointment, they will do a diaper check on me to make sure I am using my diaper and not developing a diaper rash. Often times, the Nurses will help me change my diapers. So they know what diapers I wear all the time.

Thank you all for the details.

I have been to the doctors several times in diapers in fear but thankfully nothing has needed to be done below the waist.
I’ve been planning to treat the whole thing as not a big deal but hearing what you’ve all said helps with that. I don’t want to go out of my way to prevent awkwardness if everything is totally normal. I want to have the first experience below the waist to be what is normal for me so I never have to worry about it for future visits.

My appointment is not until Sep 14th but I will be sure to post my results on this thread to affirm for others that the doctors should not be something to worry about. Or if things go south affirm as such.

@Little Sherriyou answered so many of my concerns 😬😬

Those fears about each visit to whatever specialist it may be is exactly what worries me. I have the problem I have and I want to go in with that mindset and not worry about what the doctors will think. I have thought about wearing those gray man pads or pull ups but don’t want to have to worry about doing that with the possibility of leaking every time I see a doc.

My DL friend (passed away 4 years ago from cancer) told me when we were out fishing that he had to go in to the hospital to get checked.  He was wearing a cloth diaper and plastic pants as he thought it was just a check of his upper body.  When he got there he found out it was a full body scan!  Nothing he could do about it and he said he was waiting in the hall in one of those short medical gowns that tie in the back and his diaper and plastic pants were exposed.  I can't remember what he told them as the reason he was in diapers, or if he even gave any explanation.  Maybe since he had a form of cancer they just figured he needed them.  It was an unexpected and somewhat embarrassing moment for him.

I work in a hospital and I'm in charge of security for all the prisoners that are too injured/sick to be at the jail. I don't know exactly how many thug looking tough guys with face tattoos I've seen walking around in a gown and sagging diaper, but I'm sure it's more than 100. They don't seem too self conscious about it, I'm sure they'd be even less so if they knew I was wearing a megamax under my uniform pants
