And over 300 million people in the USA. You do the math.

Good advice.  Better to choose wisely with whom you travel into bear country.  Remember that in any bear attack situation you need not be faster than the bear.  You only need to be faster than your slowest friend!

Shouldn't be a problem in America, as you are all allowed to carry guns. 

We can carry shotguns or rifles when walking in the woods in Norway, but its not as practical, and guns are expensive.
And it can't be loaded when walking.

Toss it a picnic basket, but only if you are in Jellystone park and it's Yogi.  Seriously, I have one ex-boss I would hope stumbles over a log if we were both running from a bear, but as much as I hate him, being a Christian I wouldn't want to have him torn to shreds.  I'd much prefer him to live and suffer every day.
