I call myself a polytheiseist I am officialy a christian although I follow some tenets of buddhism I don't believe in heaven just enlightenment.

Because it gives people someone to blame. Religion is such a driving force behind culture, the church is the most powerful country in the world. People cling to it because it can give them hope. I would not remove religion, although I would definetly downsize it. It once acted as an excuse for the spanish inquisition to torture innocent people. The same is now happening with IS.

It is completely stupid what they are doing! Religion is always in flux. Some people, like you said, use this power to commit mass murder.

Religious wars:

-Numerous english civil wars

-The chinese civil war that brought the first emperor into power

-The Crusades

-The second world war

-The war in Syria

-The war in Afghanistan

-This Secret War

There have been so many psychopaths who got away with it because of religion. The spanish inquisition, several Popes just to name some. It is shocking what we the supposedly most intelligient species on this planet have done.

There is often a misconception that the second world war was mainly religious but it was more about ethnic cleansing and leaving a "pure" and "superior" race, the majority of deaths were Jews but the Soviets, Poles, Serbs, People with Disabilities, Gypsies, Freemasons, Homosexuals, and Jehovah's Witnesses exceeded the number of Jews killed.
