Anyone know if it's anything to worry about?

I know there is advertising on the site and there is a donations system, are these not pulling in enough regularly to cover the costs? What kind of shortfall is there?

Donations have dried up since we can't use Paypal for them anymore, so we are surviving on ad-sales alone and those have been weak this year.

We're not about to be shut off or anything, but our funds are low and we need to pay $187 every two weeks just to keep the server on; plus more for domains, software licenses, support, etc.

Why can't we use Paypal - terms of service about sites with adult content I presume? What about services like Google Checkout*, WorldPay or NoChex?

I don't know if people are familiar with the process for donating either (I've done it once), but the options all seemed to be "one off" things - if you're looking to build a stream of donations you might want to see if you can set=up recurring plans people can opt-in for (e.g. X$/month kind of plans). Failing that, something to remind people to donate every 6 months or so might be worth it?

If you need about $5K/year to run the service, then it might be worth having some kind display showing what amount in donations is still needed. A status bar (or something else) showing how much more must be donated to get to the break-even point for the current month (i.e. whatever ($415 - (income from advertisers)) is). Lots of other sites I've seen seem to use this method.

* -- One thing that might really put people off is that they must provide an address and (in the UK at least, a phone number too) to use Google checkout. It might be worth checking if there is a way to set-up google checkout to not require that info for users to donate.

Someone reported us to PayPal calling us a porn site. Rather than actually check they shut us down until I removed all the Paypal links from the site.

I'd certainly call / e-mail Paypal about it anyway. Arguably there is a dating aspect in 'DiaperMates' (which would need pre-approval), but if you classify that as a separate entity you should be ok. An e-mail to 'aup@paypal.com' with ..."contact information, website URL and brief business summary" and you should be able to clear it up and get a justified answer. There are some things you could make clear if they apply, e.g. "do host any pictures where genitals are shown or where it is clear a sexual act is being performed", "require age confirmation", "support a community of 20,000+ users", "have some adult-oriented advertisers, but ads and companies are vetted before being accepted" etc.

Amazon Simple Pay might be worth a look too - that way anyone who has an Amazon should be able to donate easily. - Turns out the AUP won't allow it.

it might be a tax issue but couod you set up a personal paypal account? or sell something super cheap in ebay like a pen but we pay like $20 for it etc.... or like said maybe get a po box people could you a money order or check too

like mentioned, you could always go the route with little trinkets...

You could even go to the point of getting some custom DD swag (nothing fancy, just cheap pens/cups/shirts) and price them accordingly with their cost and appropriate donation amount.

IE, pen costs you $2, add on a $5 donation and sell it for $7. shirt costs you $10 so you tack on a $20 donation and sell it for $30

Or something along those lines...

I don't know why you just don't get a P.O. box and let us mail you a check. This third party system is a necessity for those that are paranoid but it's not good for us that don't want to bother with it. Paypal's a pain in the ass and more work then it's worth. On top of that, they take a cut of the money for their own profit which lowers the money you get.

I was thinking that perhaps you could try one of the professional services instead? They usually don't have qualms about any legal site. Google lists a few decent looking ones:

Some of them say they have free access, though I didn't read them in detail, others collect a small percentage. All in all, I don't think anyone here would worry about you stealing the information or using it wrongly either.

Have you price-shopped other web-hosting providers? I assume you must have a dedicated server, since a cheap web-hosting account on a shared server costs less than $200 a year. (At least the one I use does.... )
