The best solution is to line dry cloth diapers in direct sunlight. It will kill off lingering bacteria. Pre-rinsing in cold water is a must, and every so often I run the diapers through with a bit of grapefruit seed extract and tea tree oil. And don't forget to wash out your diaper pail and leave it in direct sunlight. I never have a problem with smell. And how's your water softener faring these days? This is an important consideration when you think about how often you wash diapers. Hard water will ruin cloth diapers just like bleach does. I also use an enzyme free detergent, which is likewise to the benefit of the cloth.
