Is Anybody Else Getting This?

Recommended Posts

So I have noticed while on this site only, that I am getting a popup window. Not sure what exactly is causing it and what I am mousing over at any given time. It just seems to pop up for some reason. It is a credit report ad thing, and when I move the mouse a bit it goes away, and I can't seem to find any rhyme or reason. And I can't duplicate it over the same area, or find what if anything triggers it. For The Admin, I get it in the CP there too.

Any guesses to what is causing it? I have ran scans and am showing clear with Malwarebytes and My Virus checker as well. Has the site been hacked or something?

EDIT: Okay now that I posted this, in the words above that say "Credit Report" That is now underlined and has made some type of link that makes it pop up...it's freaking weird!!! Running new firefox, might be something they did?

EDIT AGAIN: Now the underline is gone, and so is the link after I Edited this post? WEIRD!

Do you get the same popup if you use Internet explorer? You could try flushing your cookies and browser cache. In the end I am guessing you are going to have to run virus scanner and also recommend malware bytes (or your prefered malware scanning software).

I never use IE, but funny enough that is underlined too in your post, and links me to something else. Already said I ran a virus scan (Kaspersky suite) and also said I ran Malwarebytes with no success. Anyway downloaded and running BP's Idea and trying Spybot S&D. Seems to have found some stuff so far that the others didn't. Hope it works after this is done.

Well found quite a bit, most of it threat level 5, which I assume is pretty low. something called MTC.Makemesearch which I assume is the little bugger that's causing it. Still scanning. Pretty slow as compared to Malwarebytes, but seems to be more thorough too! So out goes Malwarebytes, and I have used it successfully for years. I'm running and advising everyone to switch to Spybot now! ;)

Thanks BP for the advise.

I also keep copies of other browsers besides IE and FireFox; K-Melion and Chrome That way you can test with different browsers

if I recall correctly, that one needs an uninstall tool from the bastards behind it. See if it is search hijacking too, which will give you a better idea of who it is... then stop surfing for free porn!

Try going to: Go to Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions remove any you didn't install. If it's not there you'll need to determine who it is and get the tool.

YIKES! Hope I don't get anything like that here- I'd have to get someone else to fix it :(

@repaid1 Spybot is slow but the best idea is to have a few different ones and rotate through them, scanning every couple days or more often. Spybot can be set to auto-run while you're asleep, can't speak of the others since I do almost everything manually here ;) I don't trust a computer to do right in the first place :o so I'm not going to let it run on it's own without me watching it :P

And to all, if you stay away from porn, torrent, and networking sites, most of these kinds of problems will be happening to someone else and not you! :whistling:

Do NOT go tgo the ****s from where you got it. If they did that and you go to them, what do you think you will get from them? it will mostl likely be something worse. Go to someone you TRUST

Well I determined today that it is called Coupondropdown. It is a PUP, which is a " potentially unwanted program." Loaded on a shopping website, possibly when I was looking for Christmas Ideas or something. Normally I would catch something like that, however seems this one is a bit funny as it's more of a nagware than a true virus. It installed in a add on in firefox as was mentioned along with something else I was doing I assume. Just clicked it off and deleted the addon.

More of a pain to figure out, but as it was "Allowed" by me at some point the virus and other Malware programs didn't detect it as foreign. BTW I don't do porn, nor Any Networking sites. And while I do torrent now and then I have done so for over 5 years with never a virus. And I use a private tracker site, which as yet seems to be one of the best for preventing any B.S. or bogus crap. Anyway it's gone. So no more underlined things..cept the Red ones from my spell checker :P
