freswith
If the UN gives it, it will probably be embezzled by the UN staff. If the world bank gives it, it will be embezzled by the politicians on the receiving end, and kicked back to the WB staff. If countries give it they use it to open trade opportunities of support friendly regimes. Ditto, ditto. That leaves NGOs. As long as it is given tactically in terms of wells and waterpipes etc. it is quite efficient. Big mass-feeding schemes tend to miss their mark 1 Link to comment

For the World bank-IMF they do monitor who they give their aid to and recipients in fact face harsh conditionality. Not all bilateral donors do it for self interest--the UK's DFID is a prime example of altruistic and effective aid. NGOs, I agree as the most impartial but they have less amount of funds and there are too many NGOs working on too many areas. Link to comment
freswith
I believe there is a bank/charity which lends business start-up money on very reasonable terms, the capital being raised as an interest-free deposit in developed countries, and loaned to individuals in the third world at a rate which reflects the overheads only. This seems like a good seed-corn way of stimulating the local economy. I question the Chinese style of giving railways to the mines which the Chinese wish to exploit, etc. Then shipping in their own coolies (sorry "Technical Staff) to do the difficult things like driving trucks. baby-dandan
The United States and the organizations within don't have any problem giving foreign aid. Don't get me wrong that's not a bad thing, but we need to take a closer look at our own people and their living conditions. Let's first take care of our own people before giving out donations to the rest of the world! Link to comment

Exactly how is the UN socialist when it also panders to promoting democracy around the world. And has capitalism succeeded in bring any good to nations? Link to comment
