    I like the concept, but find some logic holes in it. Why for instance do they wish to give up knowledge? Isn’t it possible to just unlock their emotional side & “inner child” without giving up their “adult” skills? Also, who does manage The Great Work? If going through Purification means, among other things, progressively giving up responsibilities, then who makes choices for the Church? I suspect there’s an A.I. beyond everything. That, or maybe Purification is not the final destination and, after some time as Babies, Purified persons are allowed to become adults once again. That would explain why Katrina said that Edenites do “archive” their adulthood memories, and not delate them. Maybe, after experiencing Purification, those memories, together with the knowledge and skills acquired in a lifetime’s span, are given back together with responsibility.

    I like how you don’t go for extremes. How for instance caretakers aren’t all good or all bad, or how the reactions of clients aren’t fully emotional or fully rational, but a mix of the two. Also, the helplessness feeling in the shower scene was particularly appreciated.

    It’s not necessarily the bad ending (btw, I love ❤️ bad endings) but more the fact that you like to capsize the initial assumptions. If your title is “When the lamb meets the butcher”, I expect that the lamb will be the evil character. What a sharp chair!

    I’ll pass this one, but would be interested into the new Supersoft model made for guerrilla environment and/or suitable in case of chemical/bacteriological warfare. Special feature: if burned (after usage), it can provide enough heat to warm your bunker for a whole winter night. It would be more in line with our current predicament.

    From the moment you introduced the concept of a re-absorbing stent, I knew this was going to end badly. My guess was a plugged urethra, an extremely swollen bladder and an embarrassing visit to ER. Prototype testing would likely be done on pigs or other large mammals. That would be a concept that could be used for further fiction.

    The whole Academy process has similarities with steel heat treatment, the process that transforms soft iron into hard and yet resilient steel. First, you have to heat the material into austentitic region (over 900 C), so that the MEMORY of the previous lattice is totally lost. Then, the alloy is dropped into oil to fast quench it. This way, the austenitic lattice is “frozen”, but atoms world like to rearrange into a more comfortable position. The structure (martensitic lattice) is extremely tense (= hard), but also brittle. It still wishes to evolve into something else. Finally, and here comes the finest part of the art of metallurgy, there is the tempering: a slow and gradual heating that preserves most of the hardness acheived through the martensitic transformation, but also makes the material more resilient. Each steel is different, depending on how much carbon and other metals are alloyed in it. Heat treatment needs to be fine-tuned according to the exact chemical composition of the alloy. Some elements are considered “poisons” for steel: if they somehow enter into the alloy, they will irreversibly compromise the final result and the manufacturer will have to scrap the steel. Bala has been brought up to the austenitic region and now is about to get quenched. How will her chemical composition react to the treatment?
