id0ntknow
Hey everybody. I am wanting to upgrade my PC's graphics card and CPU at some point fairly soon, but I don't know much about computer parts and stuff, so any advice would help. Here is what it has now. Link to comment
DailyDi
Some nice upgrades available for that motherboard. Link to comment

DailyDi
Never have had a need for dual cards. I just pick carefully my single. That's why I self-build or go custom, as very off-the-shelf computer I have bought has needed a video upgrade out of the box. And after disapointments in the last few years from Dell and HP I don't want a mass produced one anymore Link to comment
id0ntknow
I'll keep those upgrades in mind DailyDi. I'll need to do some saving before I can do this, so that will take a little time. Link to comment
id0ntknow
I just ordered this for my computer, and will be looking for the graphics upgrade over the next month or so. Link to comment
id0ntknow
I got my processor in today. I can't install it yet though, since I don't have any thermal paste (could have sworn I did). This brings me to 2 questions. Link to comment
DailyDi
1. Should be enough unless you plan to crazy overclock, which shouldn't be needed. 2. Used price seems to be 70-80. For a friend I'd say ask $60 take 50 Link to comment
Baby Brian
Most new heat sinks come with a layer of thermal paste already on them. Check to see if it has any on it. If it does then you're ok. If not, I wouldn't recommend running it at all. I did this once and due to not having any paste, the heat wasn't taken away quickly enough from one small spot on my cpu (even with the fan running). That's all it took to ruin it and really set me back. Link to comment
id0ntknow
I'm going to buy some paste this weekend, and will probably install it on Sunday. Link to comment
id0ntknow
I ordered this yesterday before going to work. Link to comment
id0ntknow
Got my video card in today. plan to try to install by the weekend. Also my friend at work has an Intel PC, so my old CPU won't work with it. I'll just have to try again about selling it. Link to comment
id0ntknow
I got everything installed the other night, but it was overheating. I took it up to Best Buy, and had Geek Squad install a water cooler for me. Now it appears to be working fine. Link to comment
id0ntknow
Could anyone here tell me if there is an optimum temperature for a CPU? When I installed the new CPU with my old heatsink and fan, it was trying to run at 147 degrees F, and then at 154 degrees F. Now that I have the water cooler on it, it is running at around 116 degrees F. Is this safe for it, since it still seems a little high to me. Link to comment
Baby Brian
Most cpu's need to run under 180 degrees, and have a shut off in them if they reach that high- certainly at 200. Generally you want them to run under 160 or they start running slower. It sounds like you were OK before, but even better now. Link to comment

It was shutting off when I didn't have the water cooler attached to it. Link to comment
Baby Brian
Yeah that would be the overheating protection- good thing too. You may have just had an inefficient cooler/fan or not enough silver solution applied to the cpu/fan. 99% of the time a water cooler is not normally needed unless you are doing a LOT of processing. At least you got what you paid for and is working really good. Hope it doesn't leak on you since that's how most end up after a few years. Link to comment
Kodachi96
I might need a new graphics card. I might ask the hubby to get me one for xmas or my bday. I think I am fine for now. All I am running is D3 ROS. Don't think I need much more than I got, it works fine. Link to comment
id0ntknow
I wasn't really sure where to put this, but since it's my topic anyway, I figure here is fine. I've purchased a Blu-ray optical drive for my computer, and the other day when I went to watch a movie in that drive, it wouldn't play. It plays DVDs fine, but it wouldn't play a Blu-ray disc. I've gone into the properties of the drive, and tried to update the drivers for it, but they were greyed out to where I couldn't click on the button. Looking at the properties, it is listed as, HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW UH12NS30 ATA Device, and shows DVD/CD ROM drives as the type. Does this mean it's not a Blu-ray player at all? Link to comment
Baby Brian
The bddvd probably stands for Blu-ray device dvd, or something like that. Chances are you have the wrong driver installed. Try removing the device from you systems, hardware list. Restart you pc and install the driver manually. If you have an install disk and a second drive, install it from there. Or if Windows detects it, be careful to select the correct driver in the list that pops up. If you're still having trouble after trying that, look up the customer support number for your device and give the manufacturer a call. They can walk you through it step by step, and/or confirm if it is a Blu-ray player or not. Link to comment
id0ntknow
I googled the model number, and found a page on LG's site with software. I downloaded, and installed, but didn't help at all. Link to comment
