Oooooh that would be cool, wouldn't it? Maybe it'll happen in the next chapter... or maybe something else happens. I think you'll enjoy it whatever it is!

Chapter 8: Hunter

Arbitrio Sanguinis – LittleFallenPrincess

“Seriously? Hunters?” Fiona asked, her eyes wide open in panic as we both hid behind a car that was parked on the curb where we were just attacked.

“Seriously! And I know just who it is. Been a while though…” I replied, thinking back to the last time I had seen that scarlet fletching. It must have been decades now…

“You know these creeps?”

“Creeps? Plural? No, it’s just one guy. Though he must be ancient by now…”

“Definitely two people at least, I can smell them from here. Two distinctive smells coming from two separate directions, both of whom are coursing with adrenaline.”

Benefits of having a werewolf with you, I guess.

“We need to get out of here.” I replied, stating the obvious.

“I agree, though we can’t lead them back to where you live.”

“True… we’d just be advertising where I live.”

“You told me you had roommates, I was thinking more for their sake so they don’t get attacked when we run there… as these hunters probably already know where you live.”

“You think so? That means… ahhh!” I screamed, thwacking the car door with my hand. Thankfully, it was a beaten-up old engine that meant there was no alarm on it. Not that it would have mattered, these vampire hunters know exactly where we are and have us pinned down behind the car, so if we tried to get out we’d be hit by a crossbow bolt as soon as they saw our chests. “Fine. Sanctuary. Humans can’t see past the perception spell. They’ll know a rough area where we went, but they won’t be able to find us there.”

“That’s so cool…” Fiona said, before realising she was drifting off into her own thoughts. Shaking her head, she then nodded to me. “Good idea. How far is it from here? I’ve… umm… never actually been.”

“We need to make it past these hunters first, but then we’ve got to run for at least a mile, eastwards.” I explained. At least we were capable of running for that long without exhausting ourselves, and we’d be much faster than these vampire hunters. Only issue was… getting away from them in the first place.

Another crossbow bolt flew over my head, landing in the wall opposite me.

“We need to go soon. Maybe after the next time they need to fire and reload?” I suggested.

“Good thinking, cutie.”

My face turned red as I nodded up at her, my heart… well no, my heart would be beating a mile a minute, but due to my vampiric state… look, it’s beating a tiny bit faster than usual, okay? It’s not like our hearts are completely useless, otherwise sticking a stake or shooting a crossbow bolt through them would do nothing! They do work, they just work a lot slower than a human one. And I could sense the slight increase in my heart rate as I looked around, trying to find a way out of here.

It’s me they’re after, so I thought maybe if I run out, distract them, that will give Fiona enough time to get away and run to the Sanctuary. Me though… I have no idea what I’d do once I got their attention. But if it means she gets away safe, that’s good, it’s me they want anyway.

I quickly considered all my available options, and no doubt Fiona was doing the same, but before we could discuss or suggest them to each other, we both looked at each other, realising there hadn’t been another bolt fired since that one that hit the wall.

“Are they waiting for us?” I asked Fiona.

She took a few sniffs of the air, perking her ears up, before shaking her head at me.

“No… they’re on the move…”

I turned around and peeked over the hood of this beaten up car… and the streets were dead. I could hear footsteps though… albeit very very quiet ones. As if they had been trained to be as silent as possible… just so they could sneak up on vampires…

Fiona realised the same and grabbed me, pulling me behind her, as our assailants dropped in front of us. They must have used the rooftops of the surrounding houses to get around, giving them the height advantage they needed to drop down on us to finish us off.

“I don’t know what the old man was so worried about…” One of them said, laughing at the other.

I looked around Fiona’s body to get a better look at the people who were hunting me, and I was surprised to see two people, both relatively young… both wielding long blades in one hand, stakes in the other. Long, slender bodies, very much human ones, adorned with the most edgy looking coats and outfits I had ever seen. I swear it was the 90s all over again with those long black coats. I was half expecting them to start bullet-timing and wearing sunglasses. Whilst part of me was still terrified by the danger I was still in, a larger part of me actually found this funny. Though if I was to die by the hands of these two cosplayers… I would be mortified.

Covering their faces with black half masks, they also had black beanies on to cover their hair. They were really going all-in on the stealth thing… which had worked until Fiona picked up their scent.

Honestly… if Fiona wasn’t here, maybe I wouldn’t have noticed them until it was too late... I would have needed them to have gotten closer before I could smell their blood, as they were using some kind of musk to hide the scent of their blood. Clearly they know how to fight a vampire, but they have no clue what they’re doing around a werewolf, apparently.

“WHO ARE YOU?” I shouted from behind Fiona, who seemed to insist on standing between them and me.

“Yeah, clearly we’ve surpassed him now. Couldn’t even hunt this one pathetic bloodsucker…” The other hunter said, sounding a bit more feminine than the former.

“She asked a question…” Fiona growled.

The first hunter, the man, held out his hands in a ‘calm down’ motion towards Fiona, whilst still holding both weapons firmly in them, which kinda defeated the purpose.

“Look, we just want the girl behind you. We don’t hunt humans…” The male hunter said, rolling his eyes at my potential partner.

“Humans?” Fiona said, playing along. They clearly didn’t know what she was. So she used this to her advantage by looking at me in pseudo-shock. “Wait… so she’s…”

“A vampire. Yes, they exist. Now run along, before you get hurt…” The female hunter said, clearing falling for Fiona’s ruse.

“Tell me who you are first…” Fiona insisted.

“We’re just a family with a little grudge to bear with this little bloodsucker…”

“Thought so…” I mumbled.

“Okay, thank you. You can run along now, before you get hurt.” Fiona replied to the hunters, mimicking their mocking tone.

“Us get hurt? Oh love… I don’t think so...”

Both of these hunters sounded so… proper. Clearly trained well and had received only the best education. And if they’re who I think they are… they were a threat, even if they looked fucking ridiculous.

“Oh but I do…” Fiona looked down at me, grinning, pushing me further behind her, before turning her attention to the hunters again.

Okay, I’m not going to describe what happened next in great detail, partially because it all happened so fast… but mostly because it was disgusting. Not gonna lie… werewolf transformations are eww. The cracking of their bones, the way their muscles move and their face elongates… just… eww.

But in a few short moments, the scruffy, cuddly Fiona had been replaced by the largest, fiercest… most ginger werewolf I had ever seen in my life. Like… I wondered if their hair colour determines what their fur colour would be, as most werewolves just have black or brown hair, some white if they’re older. Never had I seen a ginger werewolf before. Abby is the only redhead I knew, and when she transforms into her fox-like form, it’s a beautiful white, so I wasn’t sure if it was the same with werewolves. Fiona did mention being a ginger werewolf… but I wasn’t sure if she was joking or not. But hey, this answers it.

Fiona’s clothes were torn and ripped, as they barely fit her hulking form now, but still managed to give her some modesty around her lower half.

And once I had finally stopped staring at the transformation my potentially-future-Mummy had just gone through, I turned my gaze to the two vampire hunters, to see how they were reacting to this sudden wrench in the gears.

Turns out… they weren’t ready for a werewolf. I don’t think they’ve ever seen one, much less been ready to fight one, as before Fiona could even say ‘boo’... they had run for their lives, dropping a smoke bomb to cover their escape, leaving me and my big furry protector alone together.

“Well… that was easy.” Fiona growled, sounding much more… guttural. You could tell it was still her from her voice, but it sounded much more menacing and feral, very much the same way Grim’s goes from a whiny little brat to something much more adult and animalistic when he transforms.

“I… wow…” I said, finding myself unable to stop staring at this huge wolf-like woman. From her fangs, her snout… her canine ears… she even had a freaking tail now! And damn, she was built.

I found myself unable to stop staring at the muscles in her arms… she looked so damn… strong.

“You should see me when I’m human…” Fiona winked at me.

“Yes please….” I muttered quickly without thinking. It took a second, but I realised what I said, and tried to move past it as quickly as I could, coughing and spluttering. “So… you’re this jacked when you’re human?”

“I like to work out occasionally. Gotta stay strong so I can lift little princesses like you, and protect them when I need to…”

“But you’re a werewolf… you’re already inherently strong…”

“And?”

“Hey… I’m not complaining…” I said in awe at this woman. This strong… furry… woman.

“Now look away again hun, I know the transformation is a bit… unsettling at first. I freaked out the first time I saw a werewolf do it. Also… can I have my hoodie back please? I’m glad I gave it to you now, though I wasn’t expecting to need it myself.”

“Of course!” I said, quickly turning around and slipping the hoodie over my head, as I heard the cracking of bones and groaning coming from behind me.

After a few seconds, and a lot of groaning and painful noises, I felt a slight tap on the shoulder. Turning around, I saw a very human, mostly naked version of Fiona standing in front of me. Her jeans were torn and ripped, and barely held together around her midriff, protecting her modesty. Her upper half though… Her flannel shirt and camisole was completely ruined, so she had discarded that and was currently using one hand to cover her boobs whilst holding out the other, awaiting the return of her hoodie.

Not wanting to keep her waiting, I handed the hoodie back over and closed my eyes whilst she slipped it on.

“Thanks, cupcake. You okay?” She asked, softly. Her voice had returned to her normal cadence, no longer sounding guttural.

“I am… thanks to you.”

“I’m sure you could’ve handled them.” She grinned at me.

“I’d like to think so, but they’re a lot younger and more agile than the hunter who hunted me decades ago.”

“Who is this jerk you’re talking about by the way? I know… why don’t you tell me on the way to the Sanctuary?”

“Sure!”

And so we walked… or at least half-ran… to the Sanctuary, rushing through the front door and ringing the bell on the reception counter.

“Hello, how can we help you?” Susie asked, walking in from the back room to the reception desk, looking up at Fiona in awe. That’s when she noticed someone was next to her and realised just who it was. “Wait… Lucy? What are you doing here?”

“Well… You know that hunter you beat up in the 80s?” I sighed.

“Oh no…”

“Well turns out his grandkids are after me…”

Susie called for Beth, and the two of them discussed my situation a bit whilst Fiona and I settled in their living room with a cup of tea each. Beth had to magically repair Fiona’s pants and shirt, as she had no clothes that would fit Fiona’s muscular body, but once that was done and Fiona had replaced the hoodie she took back with her newly-repaired flannel shirt, we were given a drink and a nice sit down whilst they got to work sorting my issue out.

This is what they do now, what they’ve done for years. You have an issue? They’ll help you get out of it. Right now they are calling Abby and Grim, arranging for them both to move into the Sanctuary, along with myself, until the vampire hunter issue has been dealt with. They’ll go get all our stuff and move us into our own rooms, and then we’d come up with a plan to deal with the hunters. It may mean moving house again, but I’m sure we’ll be alright, Susie and Beth are amazing at this kind of thing, and I think they may have even called in Beatrice to help, once she’s finished sorting the Lamia situation.

“So… they’re the hunter’s grandkids? Are you sure?” Fiona asked, sipping on her tea, trying to act proper in front of me. It was clear she felt uncomfortable, she looked more like an energy drink or black coffee gal, not a pinky-finger-lifting tea drinker. No, that seemed much more Avery’s thing…

‘AVERY!’

That realisation made me grab my phone from my pocket, whilst trying to reply to Fiona.

“Yeah, well… they’re… too young… to be his children… at least from what I could tell from their voices…”

I struggled to open my phone, my hands still shaking slightly from the shock of everything that just happened.

“And they mentioned family… and that family uses that fletching… so I figured they must be his grandkids instead. Probably out for revenge.”

“And you said you haven't seen this guy in forty years?” Fiona asked.

“I…” I unlocked the phone and opened my messages. “I mean yeah… but then there was this time in the 90s where he found me for like ten seconds, but I may have shattered his ankle in those ten seconds. Which probably put an end to his hunting days. Which is probably why his grandkids are after me.”

I opened my messages with Avery, to see she had sent a few ‘Please get in touch so I know you got home safe’ messages. So I quickly typed up a reply and hit send.

Lucy: Got home safe. Was a bit of an incident on the way home but nothing I couldn’t handle. How are you?

A few seconds later, whilst Fiona was taking another sip, I got a reply from Avery.

Avery: Oh good! I was a bit worried, you hadn’t replied for a long time, what happened? Are you okay?

Lucy: I’m okay! Just got harassed by a couple of thugs, that’s it. My friend kept me safe.

Avery: Oh no, I’m so sorry! But I’m glad you’re home safe now! Did he keep you safe?

Lucy: Yeah she did. My knight in shining armour :P

Avery: Is this friend… a romantic interest?

Avery: Sorry, that’s rude of me to ask. Forget I said anything.

Lucy: No, it’s okay. I’m… not sure yet though.

Avery: Well I’m not one to be outdone. I play for keeps. So how about we go out on a date in a couple of days?

After everything that had gone on tonight, I was a bit nervous to even step foot outside the Sanctuary, let alone go out on another date. Especially if tonight’s date ended up this way… I mean I sorta had two dates in one night and BOTH ended badly. At least with Fiona it wasn’t actually her that was the problem, it was those asshole hunters, but still…

Avery: My treat. You don’t have to do a thing. Only thing I ask is that you come padded.

I mean… come on… how can I not say yes? The logical part of my brain was saying this wasn’t a good time for a date, I’d be moving into the Sanctuary tonight and then I’d have to wait for the hunters to back off (or we would hunt them)...

…But the little side of my brain, the impulsive, romance-obsessed… lonely… part of me… that side took control of my fingers and quickly replied to the woman.

Lucy: I’d love to!

Well we didn't get a mauling but we got a transformation at least.

These hunters need a hobby. Then again monster murder probably is their hobby. Wonder what their day jobs are.

Can't wait to meet Avery.

Chapter 9: Sanctuary

Arbitrio Sanguinis – LittleFallenPrincess

“Are you going to be okay?” Fiona asked as she stood on the other side of the front doors to the Sanctuary, holding my hands in hers, looking lovingly into my eyes.

I could feel a genuine connection with her, though I was still a bit on the fence regarding how ‘Mummy’ she felt to me. There would be times she would act very Mummy-like, but then most of the time she just acted like a big sister, as we have a lot in common, especially video games and movies. But I could feel that twinge in my nearly-still heart, a twinge that indicated that there was definitely something about her that I liked.

Which was just making my choice even harder, if I’m going to be honest.

But then I guess I haven’t given Avery a proper chance yet. I’ve not even met the woman yet, though that’ll change in a couple of days, when I go out on a date with her.

“I’ll be okay.” I replied, smiling up at the scruffy woman with the cute face and cute cheeks and cute smile and… well, cute everything. “You going to be okay walking home?”

“Yeah, don’t worry about me. So… I was wondering… this isn’t technically a date, right? I’d hate this to be my first and only chance at…” She asked, blushing.

“NO! Not at all…” I said, realising I may have just blurted that first bit out a bit too loudly.

“Oh good. Can… Can I ask you out on a proper date then?” Fiona’s face lit up again.

“I’d love that!”

“Maybe something indoors though? Nearby? I don’t want you getting attacked by those hunters again.”

I didn’t want to tell her that I had already organised a date in the city centre again, much to the annoyance of my sensible adult self.

“Sure.”

“What about a movie night here? I’ll bring a projector. I’ve got a bunch of movie recommendations… though if you’re as old as you say you are, you’ve probably seen them!”

“Even if I have, I’d love to see them again… with you anyway…” I replied, looking down at the floor, blushing.

“Then it's a date then! How about… in a couple of days?”

“Oh… umm…” I couldn’t seem to come up with an excuse as to why I couldn’t go out with her then, and I couldn’t just tell her that I’ve got a date that evening, as cool as she seems to be about me seeing other people whilst we get to know each other.

“Three days time?” She suggested.

“Sure!” I replied, smiling up at her.

“Then I’ll use my time wisely to rummage around my stash of movies and find the perfect ones for our date! And don’t worry, I’ll keep my phone on me! I couldn’t not talk to a cute little baby like you…”

It felt like I had been exposed to sunlight with how warm my cheeks were burning right now, as she bent down, kissed my cheek gently, shoved something in my hand, then walked off, waving back at me as she headed off down the road.

“She was nice!”

I turned around in shock to see Susie standing there, with the biggest grin on her face.

“Susie… how long were you standing there…”

“Long enough. So… have a good night? Definitely sounds like a busy one! Nearly got forcibly inducted into a Lamia’s harem, saved by the werewolf you were talking to online, had a sort-of-date with her at her shop, got attacked by vampire hunters, moved back here, then got a second date with the hot werewolf chick…”

“First date! This doesn’t count!”

“Does it not? She gave you a kiss on the cheek, AND she gave you her hoodie… I know it’s been decades since I last dated someone, since… way before I met Beth, but that seemed like a first date…”

“I…”

Looking down, I noticed that Fiona had actually given me her hoodie. Bringing it up to my nose, I could smell her unique scent of ‘dog mixed with cut plants’ and it was just so… reassuring.

“Okay, take that into your new room…” Susie joked, nudging me a bit. “And what of this mystical human I’ve heard about?”

“I’ve got a date with her in a couple of days…”

“Juggling two women? Risky business, Lucina…” Susie said, raising her eyebrow at me in judgement.

“That’s not my name…”

“Oh shush. Anyway, it’s late, you coming to raid the fridge before Beth comes to get us both ready for bed?”

“Ready for bed? But…”

“Well she’s my Mummy, and you’re just a baby…”

“I’m not a baby!”

“Suuure… come on then, Casanova…”

I lay there in silence, alone, in my new, albeit temporary, room… typing frantically on my phone’s keyboard.

Avery: You all snuggled up in bed?

Lucy: Uh huh.

Avery: Got your fave stuffie too?

Lucy: No :(

Avery: Awww, why not?

Lucy: Not staying at home atm, so no stuffies.

Avery: Where are you staying?

Lucy: With a friend. I’m okay! I’ll have my stuffies tomorrow.

Avery: Wish I was there, so you’ve got someone to snuggle.

Lucy: Me too. Been forever since I last had a bedtime story!

Avery: I’ll remember that. Maybe I’ll record myself reading one for you.

Lucy: I’d love dat.

Sure, I’m a vampire, I wasn’t exactly tired. My sleeping schedule isn’t like most people’s. Though it's not a typical vamp’s one either, it’s… well… it's a mess really. But after the events of tonight, there was no way I was sleeping anytime soon. Not when I had both Avery AND Fiona messaging me. Every few minutes I’d switch over conversations and give the other attention, which was messing with my focus a bit, but I was just about managing. It’ll be much easier when I’ve finally decided which one is the better match, though I’m also dreading turning down whoever it is that I match less with. Because both of them seem really into me, and both of them are so lovely and perfect! It’s not fair for a baby to have to make a hard decision like this!

When it was a little after midnight, Avery had to go, as she has work in the morning, so she said goodnight to me and even put a few kisses at the end of her message, which made me blush. Fiona managed to stay up until about 1am, but even then she said she’d have to get up to open up shop, so she sent me a really cute message before heading off to sleep herself.

Which meant I was now left alone, feeling restless, unable to calm after the excitement of today.

That’s when I heard a knock on the door.

“Come in…” I called out.

Abby walked in, smiling and waving at me as she stood in the doorway.

“Just wanted to let you know we’ve moved everything over.” She said to me, smiling.

“Already? I thought we’d do it tomorrow.”

“Remember Luce… Susie and Beth do this regularly now. It’s not like the first time you had to move here.”

“Sorry for making you move…”

“Shush! No apologising. We don’t hold it against you, it’s just something people like us have to go through occasionally. It was only a matter of time before that jerk turned up. Though I wasn’t expecting him to have procreated and sent his spawn after us.”

“Still… sorry.” I sighed, feeling guilty.

“Shush. Or I’ll throw you over my lap. Don’t think I’m too little to do that!”

I blushed at my friend, before hiding my face under the duvet.

“Here… your stuff is in storage right now, you can go through it for the important things when you’re ready, but for now… I thought you’d like her back…”

Lucy produced a stuffie from behind her back, throwing it directly at my face.

“Roxxy!!!!” I cried out, grabbing my sheep plushie and squeezing her tightly. “Fank you, Abs!”

“You’re welcome. How are things with that werewolf by the way? Susie said you had your first date with her tonight? I thought you were going out with a Lamia?”

“The lamia was… umm... But no, Fiona saved me and we spent the evening together. She’s the one who protected me from the hunters. Oh and it wasn’t a date! I… don’t think it was anyway, she definitely didn’t want it to be.”

“Because she isn’t into you?”

“No! Because she wanted a proper first date…”

“Oh she’s smitten. Can’t blame her. If you manage to crack open that very defensive, shy shell of yours… you’re a perfect little baby.”

“Shuuuuuuush!” I whined at her, hiding my face in my stuffie.

“What happened with the Lamia then? Susie didn’t tell us much, mostly just the hunters thing.”

“She was just trying to kidnap me, that's all…”

“That’s all? Lucy…” Abby’s face scrunched up in frustration.

“I’m okay! Fiona saved me. Then Bea came to clean everything up.”

“Well I’m glad you had a good time, otherwise.”

“How do you know that?”

“You haven’t stopped smiling the whole time I’ve been standing here. Not seen you this happy in… well… all the time I’ve known you. The closest you’ve gotten to being this happy was when Nia joined our little group. What about that human you were telling me about over breakfast the other day?”

“I’ve got a date with her in a couple of days.”

“Look at you making all this progress! I’m proud of you, hun. Well… it’s late, and I’m exhausted from moving to the Sanctuary, so I’m gonna hit the hay. Get some sleep, no doubt you’ll want to be up to say good morning to your two suitors…”

“I… good night…” I replied, stopping myself from trying to argue as she was definitely correct, I didn’t want to sleep… I just wanted to talk to both of them again.

-------------------------Days Later---------------------------

“You think this is suitable?” I asked, admiring myself in the mirror as my friends stood behind me and watched, silently judging. It had been two days of mostly hanging around the Sanctuary, doing nothing whilst we hid from the hunters, with most of it being spent on my phone, chatting to the two Mummies I was chatting to.

“She said she wanted you padded, right?” Beth replied. “Well this hides your nappy, but allows easy access if she wants to change you.” She said, pointing at the relatively short skirt I had on.

“But what about the amount of skin I’m showing? Won’t she see my pale skin and think something is wrong with me?”

“Hun… I think she’s going to be a bit distracted by the nappy and the blushing face to think about how pale you are…” Abby giggled.

I did a little pout at them all and turned back to the mirror. Short skirt, big black stompy boots, a deep red top with tears in it, and my biggest, longest, snuggliest black coat. It was nearly as snuggly as Fiona’s hoodie, but I don’t think Avery would appreciate me turning up wearing a hoodie from a romantic rival of hers.

“Did she say what you’re doing tonight?” Susie asked.

“Just that we’re going for a little walk around the city, a romantic stroll.” I replied.

“What about food?” Grim asked, finally adding his voice to the conversation. Of course he only pops up when food is being talked about.

“I don’t think she’s got anything planned. At least she’s not told me. Maybe we’ll just grab some takeaway thing maybe? She just said to meet her by the fountain in the plaza, and to make sure I'm… thickly padded.” Even just saying those last two words made my cheeks start to burn again.

“Well you’re definitely the latter. As for the former… I still think it’s a mistake, honey. But you’ve got a crystal now to warn us if the hunters turn up again. Just call us using that and we’ll teleport you back.” Beth smiled at me, pointing towards my safety device wrapped around my neck.

“What about Avery? Will she get teleported along with me?” I asked, clutching the crystal necklace.

“For her safety… yes. Though we’d have to wipe her memory of this place before taking her back home. If you end up choosing her, then maybe she can know about this place, but until then, sorry hun, she can’t know anything about the Sanctuary. And I don’t think I need to remind you… no calling for a fake emergency. Otherwise you’ll end up as a real dolly…”

“Eeek!”

“Right, you better get going, otherwise you’re going to be late! Let’s go, crinkle pants! I’ll drop you off in town before I head to the monstrum market for supplies.”

“Just the two of us?”

“Yeah, Susie is gonna stay here and watch the fort whilst I’m gone. So hop to it, little Lucy…” Beth ordered, smacking my padded butt slightly, making me blush and squirm as I quickly shuffled out the door.

Beth had dropped me off a couple of streets away from where I was due to meet Avery. Mostly because of parking, but also because she didn’t want to make things awkward by appearing with me in front of Avery.

So I walked alone, the night air making my skin feel tingly, but not cold enough that I’d need any more layers than the ones I’ve got on. I do wish I had worn some kind of tights though, as the only part of me being affected by the chilly weather are my legs. But that would sacrifice easy access to my nappy… something I thought Avery would appreciate.

“Oh wow…” I heard from behind me.

Thinking it’s just some weird catcall, I ignored the person and continued walking.

“I bet it’s hard to walk with so much padding…”

Okay… now that’s just freaky. And scary.

Turning around to see who apparently knew way too much about me… I saw Avery, standing a few feet away from me, looking business smart… and gorgeous… and amazing and… and… smiling down at me.

“I… Avery! Hi! Sorry! I thought we were meeting…”

“You arrived just as I did. I saw your friend drop you off just as I was parking my car, and I wanted to surprise you…” She replied.

“Well you certainly managed that!” I laughed.

“How are you doing, sweetie?”

“I’m okay. How’re you?”

“Better now that I’ve seen that cute face in person. Might I say… your pictures are cute, but they do not do your cuteness justice!”

I blushed and quickly stared at the floor, twiddling my thumbs awkwardly, not knowing how to react.

“I… thanks…”

“And such a good girl too!”

“Illegals!

“What?” She asked, taken aback.

“Not… allowed… Call me… good girl…”

“And why not?” Thankfully she hadn’t taken me too seriously and saw that I was just playing, as her grin widened and she stepped forward so that she was standing just in front of me. Reaching out, she grabbed my hands and held them in hers, rubbing the back of them gently.

“Cus… makes me… blushy…” I mumbled.

“D’awww! That’s because when you call a good girl a good girl… they turn into blushy good girls!”

“Stooooop!”

“Hmm… I don’t think I will. Good job you’re not the one making decisions tonight then, isn’t it?” She grinned.

“I… I guess…”

Normally I wouldn’t relinquish control to anyone unless I really knew them. She seemed really nice and seemed to have this… power over me… but even then, I knew that I’d only give her a bit of control, just to see if I can trust her with my little side. Only when I found the one would I give up complete control. Only when I found that one person I can trust more than anyone.

She gets a fraction, but if at any point she shows that I can’t trust her, she gets those privileges revoked immediately. That’s why it wasn’t so scary to do little tasks for her like come to this date padded, or let her decide what we’re doing for the date. It’s not like I’m trusting her with a chastity belt or a locking collar or anything.

“Good girl.” She repeated, making me blush and squirm.

“So… what are we doing tonight then? You never told me exactly what we’re doing!” I asked.

“Because I wanted it to be a surprise.”

“Well it’s gotta be something in town…”

“Clever girl!” She said in such a cheery, condescending tone… which was really working right now, might I add.

“I… fank you…”

“Now, why don’t you hold my hand tightly and we’ll go have some fun?”

I looked up, into her beautiful blue eyes, and smiled.

Chapter 10: The Markets

Arbitrio Sanguinis – LittleFallenPrincess

I walked alongside this very tall, very feminine, very gorgeous woman… feeling a bit out of place.

Whilst I wasn’t as casual or ‘scruffy’ as Fiona, my outfit still seemed casual and cheap compared to Avery’s long red coat that stopped just above her ankles, her thick, cosy black woollen turtleneck sweater that just made her look even more huggable, and her long black suit pants that stopped just short of her high heels.

This woman looked like a literal Goddess, whereas I was a pathetic, cursed creature of the night. And this just made me feel even worse about all this, as she’s only human, she doesn’t know what she’s getting into or even what I really am. I mean is it even fair I’m leading her down this way? If I end up choosing her… her mind will be blown, her world shattered… everything she thought was the thing of myth and legend… will be a reality to her. I’m potentially bringing her into a world she may not want to join or be part of… or may not want to even know about.

But as she clutched my hand… whilst we walked towards the human market stalls where they sold all manner of weird food and knick knacks… and as she looked down at me and smiled… all my worries just didn’t matter. That smile of hers made all my worries an issue for future-Lucy, not present-Lucy. Present-Lucy can go on this cute, romantic date with this gorgeous woman who is waaaaaaay out of her league, and try to be cute and flirty. Future-Lucy can worry about who she’s going to choose, and if it’s Avery, then she can worry about how she’s going to introduce the human into her world.

“Are you okay, poppet?” Avery asked as she squeezed my hand.

“Yeah.” I replied, smiling up at her.

“You seem lost in thought. Good ones I hope?”

“I… yeah. Something like that. So umm… where are we going?”

“Well I figured we’d get a little bit of food here at the market? If you’re hungry, that is. It’s cute, and the lights make the little stalls seem even cuter, and I thought it’d be romantic to just walk around, get food, and maybe have a look at some stuff?”

“Sounds like a plan! I like that!”

“Figured restaurants would be overdone. A pretty girl like you must have been to every fancy restaurant in the city!”

“I… no…” I sighed, staring at the floor.

“No? But you’re such a cutie…”

“F… fanks…”

“Well maybe in the future I’ll take you to a nice restaurant. For now, we’ll do the markets. I think this is more up your alley anyway.”

“Uh huh! It looks fun!” I replied, with my face starting to hurt from all this smiling.

“What kind of food do you like?”

Well obviously I couldn’t tell her the truth. At least I am capable of eating human food, though I gain very little sustenance from it.

“What about that Turkish stall? The Indian one?”

“I… you pick!” I replied, as I had no idea what was good or what was bad. Other than those human snacks I have whilst playing my games, I’ve not even tried much human food if I’m honest. I do like their drinks, but aside from that, and maybe a few basic English meals… I’m a beginner when it comes to human food. Despite my long lifespan.

“How about… a little bit of everything?” She suggested, squeezing my hand.

“Sounds good!”

“Oh and sweetie…?”

“Yeah?”

“Obviously as we’re in a public place, no calling me Mummy…”

My mouth dropped.

“Ha! I’m joking! No, seriously little one, I’m joking. I just wanted to see your face, and my my… I was not disappointed. But don’t worry, I know Mummy is a special title, reserved for whoever you end up choosing to date. But if you want…”

“...Yeah?”

“You could call me ‘Miss Avery’. Or just ‘Miss’.”

“I… umm…”

“Oh dear… I think I broke the little one’s brain already. Shame… she was so cute… and I was planning on having so much fun with her before I intended to break her mind…” She teased, giggling to herself quietly.

“I…” I began blushing heavily and quickly spun around, planting my face in her arm to hide the embarrassment on my face.

“D’awww! You’re going to be so much fun to tease, little one! And don’t forget… if you need to go potty, or you need a change, you ask Miss, okay?”

“Eeeeeeeeeeeeee!” I quietly screamed into her coat, stomping my feet excitedly.

We were on our way to try the first food stall, but the twinkle of a stall’s jewellery made her stop in her tracks, and as if a tractor beam was pulling her in… she dragged me along with her over to it.

“Oh I like this!” Avery said, holding up a little handmade pendant, one made of spiralling strips of metal, encircling a small, azure teardrop jewel.

I wanted to buy it for her, but a small voice within warned me that you can’t just go buying a girl jewellery on a first date. But then… her face lit up at the shining silver that spun around the glimmering jewel in the centre, her delicate fingers gently twirling it in the air in front of her.

She seemed so enamoured by this simple piece of jewellery and whilst I’m not sure what her financial situation is… though her nice clothes seem to indicate she’s not struggling for money… I myself wasn’t struggling for money. I’m not well off like other vampires who have lived for hundreds, if not thousands of years… but I make do. It helps that I don’t have any expensive hobbies outside of gaming and the little stuff. And the bank interest over a hundred years builds up… so yeah… I could afford this little trinket if I wanted to.

No… this was too early for a gift like this. BUT… it would be very cute if, later on in the relationship, if I choose her over Fiona… to give it to her then, as a memory of our first date. So as soon as Avery put the pendant back and turned to our next stall that we were going to head to, I quickly snatched it up, held it up in front of the seller’s face, and handed the cash over. The stall owner was so baffled at how quick I managed to do all of it, he just stood there, dumbstruck as I pocketed the pendant in my coat pocket, smiled at the man awkwardly, and turned to face the same direction as Avery.

“Where now?” I asked, trying to act as innocent as possible.

“I want to get you a little something. But nothing is quite right…” She replied, frustration on her face.

“M… Miss… I mean… Avery…” I couldn’t bring myself to call her that, it was too embarrassing right now, and I wasn’t feeling little enough. That’s not to say Avery wasn’t pushing all my buttons to get me into littlespace, but my anxiety about not only the surrounding people, but also the date I was hopefully not screwing up, made it so I couldn’t feel properly little. “You don’t have to get me anything.”

“Sweetie, I want you to have a reminder of our first date.”

It was like she was reading my mind. But still, she’d have to wait for her gift. And hey, if I don’t choose her, I get a cute necklace that I can remember her by.

“Seriously, it’s okay.” I replied.

“No… I’m going to get you something. Something suitably little. Ooooh!” She suddenly flicked her head in a direction and her smile grew as she must have noticed something perfect. “Come on, sweetpea…” She said, squeezing my hand and pulling me off to a stall in the distance.

“Which one do you like?” She asked, pointing at the cute little handmade toys on offer at this market stall.

“I… umm…”

“Don’t be shy, hun. You pick out a toy you like and I’ll get it for you. Okay?”

I felt bad that she was spending money on me like this, but they weren’t very expensive and it seemed like this would really make her happy, so I looked carefully and tried to make a decision.

“I… I like… umm…”

There were a bunch of handmade wooden dolls, a few stuffed animals, some toy cars and an assortment of very old school toys. Sort of like the stuff I used to play with as an actual kid. Which was a very long time ago now.

“I like… the doll.”

“Which one?” Avery asked.

“The… Red Riding Hood one.”

I must admit, most of the toys here looked creepy as hell. Very traditional toys with very traditional faces. Meaning they were perfectly suited for a horror movie. The Red Riding Hood one was the only doll that wasn’t creepy, and I already had like twelve teddy bears at home so none of the stuffies on offer were of any interest to me.

“She’s cute. Like you!”

I blushed at the comment, clutching on to her arm as she used her free arm to grab the doll and pay for it, before handing it to me and bending down, planting a little kiss on my forehead.

“F… fank you… Miss Avery…”

Okay… maybe she was making me feel more little than I thought.

“Good girl, and you’re very welcome. Now, that’s enough distractions, we were planning on getting some food!”

The next twenty minutes or so was just Avery and I walking to each stall, her asking me which food I’d like to try.  And the whole time she was using that condescending voice you use when talking to babies and little ones… which was driving me insane. In the good way.

And I must admit… the food wasn’t too bad. It wasn’t fulfilling in any sense, it wasn’t satisfying any cravings or making me squeal in joy at the taste of it… that was one of the downsides of being a vampire, but it was still kinda yummy. I honestly didn’t even know human food was that good! I liked their energy drinks and their disgusting unhealthy snacks, but I haven’t branched out and tried to eat human food in a long time. Not stuff like this anyway. I especially liked the Indian snacks, like the pakora… which Avery insisted on feeding me, holding it up in front of my mouth to bite.

It was so much fun and I genuinely loved spending time with her. She was like the perfect Mummy. She knew how to make me feel little and special and very very blushy. She was a tease and loved to see me blush as she commented about how cute I looked nomming on a pierogi.

I felt bad because I knew that if I did actually want to pursue a relationship with Avery, I’d not only be letting Fiona down… who was also amazing in her own way, but I’d have to break Avery’s mind when I inevitably have to introduce her into the monstrum community… revealing the hidden world that was under her nose the entire time. I think that’s one of the scariest things about getting close to this amazing woman. I didn’t want her to run in fear when she finds out I’m a member of the undead. Even if vamps have been romanticised so much in human media over the years, in reality… humans don’t react well to the supernatural. I’ve seen the people Susie and Beth help, and a large amount of them are needing help because they were discovered by humans, disowned by their human families, or tried to come out to a human they liked and it ended badly. And here I was, about to try the same thing with this amazing woman.

Would I end up needing Susie and Beth’s help again?

My internal conflict was disrupted as Avery grabbed my hand and smiled down at me.

“Penny for your thoughts?” She asked.

“Just… It’s been nice tonight. I…”

“Go on, sweetpea… Be honest with me.”

“I’m just scared of ruining it.”

“You won’t ruin it.” She replied, squeezing my hand.

“You don’t know that.”

“I do. You can’t say or do anything to scare me off. Unless you go around killing people. Then maybe I’d need a heads up if you need to hide a body.” She joked, laughing.

Even her laugh was adorable.

“You barely know me. What if I did go around killing people?” I asked, seriously.

“You don’t.”

“How do you know?” I asked again.

“I can tell. You’re not a killer. Now… is there anything else you want to get off your chest? Some deep dark secret that you want to tell me to try to get me to run off? Or do you want to continue our date?”

“I…”

“Seriously, sweetpea. There’s nothing you could say to scare me off now. You’re too cute. The only thing that could make me leave is if you wanted to choose someone else. Then I’d be devastated… but I’d understand.”

“D… Deva…”

“Oh hun! No! I’m sorry! I don’t want you to feel guilty over that. I’m just saying I’d be disappointed, but I’d understand. I just want you to be happy, no matter who that's with. You’re such a sweet girl, you couldn’t hurt a fly. You can’t even stand to think of upsetting someone, let alone actually hurting anyone. I knew this from the moment we started talking.”

“I…” Tears were starting to form in the corners of my eyes and I was on the verge of a complete emotional breakdown.

“Come here, silly.”

She grabbed me and pulled me close, squeezing me tightly as I sniffled into her coat.

After a minute of this silent embrace, she stroked my hair and whispered down to me.

“Now, do you want to carry on this date? I know you’ve mostly been here for my benefit. How about we go somewhere you’d enjoy more?”

“Huh?” I asked, pulling myself back slightly so I could look up at her beautiful face, but not so far back that she would stop hugging me.

“How about we go to the other markets?”

“Huh? What other markets?” I asked, confused. There was only one human market in town at this time of year, and we were currently standing in the middle of it.

“The ones for your kind, silly!” She replied, smiling at me.

At some point I have to use all my contacts and find out where you live and have a few serious words with you.

This end.

That could mean ANYTHING.

Kind of like Littles?

Kind in terms of Monstrum?

I swear... if she's a hunter this lil' sheep will cross oceans to hunt ya!!!

Also, the creeps Avery gives made me think she's trying too much, like too too much, so much that maybe she's trying hard to do or be something...

At the same time, maybe she's just a natural mommy and somehow knows about the monstrum by some alternate channel...

Maybe both and she is a huntress...

I dunno, too many possibilities, too little me to speculate

I’ve been lurking on this story a long while, but I know from experience that lurking without comment doesn’t help writers. I laughed my padded butt off at Lucy turning into a baby doll, breathed a sigh of genuine relief that Fiona - definitely on TeamWolfiona - saved Lucy from the lamia (who needs a permanent baby doll curse from Beth herself, so that she doesn’t hurt anyone else), and now I’m both eager and nervous to see how Avery knows the monstrum world.

Honestly, though, there are a few grammatical errors, namely regarding the word after a spoken sentence. For example: “‘The ones for your kind, silly!’ She replied, smiling at me.” The word after a spoken sentence, unless performing an action, should never be capitalized, even after a quotation mark or exclamation point. ““The ones for your kind, silly!” she replied, smiling at me.” is the correct way to say this, and there’s a lot of those errors, too many to ignore. Unless a character is specifically performing an action and not speaking, you never capitalize the first word of a spoken sentence, even if the sentence ends in an exclamation point or a question mark.

Also, you never use full-stops/periods at the end of a spoken sentence (for example: “You won’t ruin it.” She replied, squeezing my hand.”). Commas are always used instead of full-stops at the end of a spoken sentence, unless - again - someone is performing an action and not purely speaking. Hence, it should be: ““You won’t ruin it,” she replied, squeezing my hand.”

The only other issue I have is more of a me-specific issue (which may not be an actual issue considering the scope of your story): you give us all of these fantastic characters and this unique living world, and I just want more. You have this whole world of human/monstrum interactions, and it just makes me wonder about the world behind it. Are there policing and governmental issues between both worlds? How many humans unknowingly or knowingly work alongside monstrum-kind? How does one handle the obvious age issues (i.e., humans living such shorter lives than most, if not all, monstrum)?

I love the unique idea you’re doing, so don’t hesitate to make it yours and just run with it! There’s so many opportunities with something like this, and while I appreciate you making this Lucy’s story and having it grounded to her, there’s got to be so many opportunities to go into more. It just makes me eager to learn more about this world of yours, and wanting more than the taste you’ve given thus far.

All that’s needed is a slight touch up with the grammatical issues I’ve mentioned, and you have yourself a solid story with a fantastic opportunity for further world-building.

Much love,

Jemma.

Where were you during my first story? XD This is what I get for trusting the autocorrect and forgetting these basic rules, having not written in nearly 20 years until i started again a couple of years ago. Thank you for reminding me, though now I'm dreading editing future chapters as that's a lot to fix! I'll have to fix old stories before I start selling them, but it may be too much work for me to go back and fix all previously posted chapters. But thank you for pointing that out!

And as for your specific personal issue, this isn't the first book in this series ^_^ I haven't gone too much into interactions between humans and monstrum, but there's a tiny bit in the first two stories. There's a bit more world building in the second book.

Because this is my 11th novel in total, and 3rd in this series. If you haven't already checked them out, I'd recommend reading the rest of the monstrum stories in order. Infernum Infantem -> Parum Mortis -> Infantem Short Story. Links can be found below.

Chapter 11: The Other Markets

Arbitrio Sanguinis – LittleFallenPrincess

“I… umm what do you mean ‘my kind’?” I asked, trying to look confused as hell regarding her revealing question.

Did… did she really have an idea of who I am? Of what I am? Or are there some other human markets that cater for other parts of my personality? Like is there a market for anxious people? Withdrawn people? Gamers? Oooooh… is there a market just for littles? Oh how amazing that would be… just lots of stalls selling… no! Can’t get distracted!

I looked up at her, nervously awaiting her answer.

She just rolled her eyes in response and leaned in closer, so her lips were inches from my ear, with her heavenly perfume invading my senses and making me blush.

“I’m not just a dumb human. I know what you are, little bloodsucker…” She whispered.

“I… ah… I mean… what? I don’t know what you mean!” I replied, pulling back, defensively. What did she mean by ‘not just a dumb human’? Was she not human after all?

“Sweetie… I grew up on tales of your kind.”

Oh… so still human, just not oblivious to the monstrum world.

“I think you’ve gotten yourself confused with someone else. I think I… I think I should go now…” I replied, stuttering slightly.

This was it. Red Alert. I needed to leave.

“Sweetie, please stay. I promise I’m not here to hurt you or whatever. I’m not one of those vampire obsessives who watch those ridiculous sparkly vampire movies. I just… look, my great great… I forget how many ‘great’s there are, but one of my ancestors knew a vampire. They were the best of friends for many years. And that knowledge of the hidden underworld of myths and monsters… that was passed down.”

“I… umm…” I didn’t know how to respond. I wasn’t expecting her to know what I was. I was too focused on how I was going to come out as a vamp to her, when it turns out she’s known all along. “How did you know I was… a…”

“A vampire? You don’t get that pale from staying indoors, hun. I had a feeling, due to your sleep schedule, your pale skin, and the way you smile in your photos… trying to hide your fangs. But it was all just speculation until earlier.”

“Earlier? What gave it away?” I asked.

“You eating that food earlier. It was clear you aren’t used to human food. What did surprise me, however, was your ability to eat some of that food with garlic in it.”

“Oh that’s just a made up myth about us. It’s stronger to us than it is to humans, but we’re not allergic or anything. Just means you have to use it in moderation.”

“So you confirm you are…”

“I… yes. I… I am…” I admitted, looking down at the floor, worrying how she was going to use this to her advantage.

“Then cool!” She said, surprising me, as she just brushed it off, grabbed my hand, and squeezed it tightly. “Like I said, I know of your kind. And I know there’s a monstrum market around here. I’ve only been a few times, as humans aren’t normally welcome without an escort. But I figured you’d be hungry, and hey, you can be my escort!”

“Are… are you…?”

“Am I what, sweetie?” She asked, puzzled.

“...Using me?”

“For what? OH! To get to the market? No! Like I said, we’re not normally welcome, but that’s not to say we aren’t allowed in at all. I just want you to eat something proper. It’s my Mummy side… I can’t help but make sure you’re well taken care of, even if you don’t belong to me… yet.” She said, winking at me, making me blush.

“I… I could do with eating something proper…” I replied.

“How do you even eat? What kind of people?” She asked, nonchalantly.

“Oh… no! I don’t… I’ve never…”

“You never… as in never ever?”

“Nope. I very nearly did when I was first turned, but I managed to stop myself. I… I don’t want to hurt anyone. So all my… meals… are ethically sourced. Purely consensual donations.”

“Well look at you… I didn’t think my admiration of you could get any higher, but you manage to surpass it anyway!” She smiled, making my heart feel warm.

“I… fank… fank you…”

She lifted her hand to my cheek, holding my chin, as she leant in and kissed my forehead.

I swear I was burning brighter than the sun at that moment, as she released my chin and smiled down at me.

“Now, why don’t we go get you something proper to eat, then we can go wander around the other market for a while and you can tell me more about the real Lucy.”

“I… I’d like dat…”

She gripped my hand as we walked up to the gate by the alley nearby. This was one of the few entrances to the market, and she wasn’t lying when she said she had been before, as she knew exactly where it was.

“Do you want to do the honours? Or me?” She asked, clearly indicating that she knew there was a password. Most monstrum knew this, and it prevented humans from accidentally wandering in.

I wanted to see if she genuinely had been here before, so I pointed at her and smiled, blushing slightly.

“Okay hun.” She said as she turned to the gate and whispered. “...Aperta.”

“So you do know it…”

“Doubting me? Don’t worry, I don’t blame you. I know a couple of people here, so don’t worry. They can vouch for me too.”

“I… no, it’s okay.” I replied, feeling awkward. She clearly had no ill intentions, she was just one of the few humans who know about our world. It happens, though it is very rare.

“Well can we say hi to them anyway?” She suggested. “I think you’ll like them.”

“I… sure…”

“Let’s go then, little one… oh, before we do… Do you need a change yet?”

“I… umm…”

“That’s a yes if I’ve ever seen one. Maybe we can find a quiet place to change you.”

My face started burning again, as if I was exposed to sunlight.

“That was worth it to see your face, but no, don’t worry sweetie, I won’t change you until you’re ready for me to do so. Though I will want to check afterwards to make sure you’ve put it on correctly, if that’s okay?”

“I… umm… uhh….” I couldn’t find any words in my overloaded, embarrassed brain right now, so I just nodded and made strange noises.

“You’re too freakin’ cute! Let’s go then.”

The Monstrum Markets were a sight to behold.

Over the years, they had only lost a small amount of wonder in my eyes. Somehow, they still felt magical every time I visited. Though I must admit, it’s been a long time since I last went. Like, it must have been years ago the last time I came here. Abby wanted to get Grim something for his birthday, so I accompanied her here. I wish my anxiety didn’t make it so scary to leave my house, otherwise I’d love to visit more often.

Because the stuff on offer here… it was really something else. Potions, reagents, enchanted and cursed items, familiars, trinkets, antiques… whatever you wanted, as long as it was magical or supernatural, it could be found here. And just like any market, they have the best food stalls. With food catering to all sorts of monstrum. Some… are not as ethically sourced as I’d like, so I try to avoid those stalls. Whilst a lot of our community has moved with the times, most trying to source our food from places that won’t hurt, harm or even alert humans, some  of the community just won’t let go of the past. They’re the ones where you don’t ask what the burgers are made from.

I try not to think about that, because whilst we have rules and laws of our own, separate from the humans, some of the older monstrum are adamant that some of the more archaic laws stay in place, often those decreeing that humans are our prey, and we are the predators. And no matter how hard we try, we can’t get those laws ruled out or overruled or anything. So in response, society moved on and most monstrum avoid those who pine for the old days where we stalked humans in the shadows and hunted them. Instead we focus more on providing business to those that source our food ethically, hoping that eventually we’ll be able to run the old ones out of business. It’s been a long process, but as we walked past one of the stalls I avoid, I noticed there was no queue, and the werewolf behind the counter looked miserable.

Good.

“I’ve only been here a handful of times, but it still amazes me…” Avery said, clutching my hand tightly.”

It looked just like any other market, but here in this little locked off part of the city, monstrum could walk about as themselves, not having to worry about hiding their visage from humans. So you saw werewolves walking about in their full wolf forms, you’d see undead shambling about as they carried boxes around, there’d be witches with their cauldrons trying to haggle with a ghost that was in full view. Rows of stalls lined the courtyard, each with very old signs advertising their wares or services, with dimly lit Victorian lamp posts illuminating the area. It was chaotic and beautiful at the same time, though the chaos made it difficult for my anxiety to handle it all, which is why I don’t visit often these days.

At least I had Avery to cling on to, though I quickly realised that I was also protecting her, as humans weren’t exactly looked upon kindly here, and I was clearly marking my territory by holding on to her, telling the rest of the people around us that she was off limits.

“I… yeah… I love it too… though it's a bit scary…” I mumbled to her in reply.

“Aww I bet. Just hold on to Miss Avery then, okay sweetie? Now… what kind of food do you want?” Avery asked.

“Last time I came there was a really nice sandwich place that uses ethically sourced ingredients that cater to each type of monstrum… their ‘vampire baguette’ was especially nice.”

“Ha! I won’t even ask what’s in it, but are you talking about the one in the corner? The one hidden away from everything?”

“I… yeah… it’s why I like it there. Plus the owner was nice. Nothing beats Teles’ stuff though.”

“Who’s that?” She asked as we passed a potion stall.

“Oh, just a friend. She owns her own shop in another part of the city.”

“Well I know the owner of that sandwich place you’re talking about. That’s one of the people I was talking about! Small world!”

“Really? He gave me a milkshake on the house once.”

“Yeah that sounds like my friend. Why don’t we go check in on him and get you some food?”

We wandered past dozens of people, making our way through the narrow market aisles, towards a quiet corner where a little tent stood.

“Oh good, it’s still here!” I said, my smile growing as I felt a little less anxious now.

“And there’s Dave. HEY DAVE!” Avery called out.

“Avery?” The familiar gargoyle at the back, behind the counter, turned around and waved at us. “Avery! It is you! How have you been?” He replied in a very deep, gruff voice. But then what are you expecting, the guy is literally made of stone.

The hulking stone monstrosity grinned at the two of us and rested his large forearms on the counter, his wings nearly knocking a shelf over.

“Dave. I told you to space your stuff out so you don’t knock it all over the place.” Avery replied as she led us through the dining tables that were set up under the tent, over to her gargoyle friend.

“I know, I’ve just been busy!” He laughed heartily.

“I’ll do it next time I visit, can’t now, sorry.”

“I see that, are you going to introduce me to your lady friend?”

I blushed as Avery turned to me.

“This is Lucy. She’s my date. And Lucy, this is Dave.”

“We’ve met. It’s nice to meet you again.” I smiled, trying to act as polite as possible.

“We have?” He asked, looking confused. He took a second to think, clearly wracking his brain trying to remember where he knew me, before a lightbulb lit up within him. “Ah! Milkshake girl!”

“I…” I blushed, speechless.

“This one loved her milkshake so much, the look on her face was just…”

Adorable?” Avery finished his sentence for him.

“Exactly. So I gave her another one on the house.”

“It… it was nice…” I mumbled, shyly.

“Do you want another one?” He asked me.

“She’ll have one of those milkshakes, and a ‘vampire baguette’ or whatever it’s called, please.” Avery said, ordering for me. Which honestly… just made me blush more.

“And you, Avery?” He asked my date.

“Just a tea. And maybe a scone, if you’ve got one.” She said, before turning to me. “Sweetie, why don’t you go find us a table under the tent somewhere, and I’ll bring it over. I need to talk to my friend about something. You don’t mind, do you? It’ll only take five minutes.”

“No, that’s okay! I’ll go… find a table then.” I replied, smiling awkwardly.

“Good girl.” She replied, ruffling my hair and patting my padded butt as I turned around and walked off, my face probably bright red from the embarrassment.

So cute! I can't decide, hope they have a poly relationship with Avery and Fiona xd

(maybe Fiona is also a switch? That could explain the big sis vibes)

Posted

Okay, she knows.

She wanted to say something about her great-great-grandmother or great-great-grandfather, obviously.

And she knows people there.

But somehow this sending away and talking alone.

That rings my alarm bells (and knowing that you like to be mean to us).

I will keep a close eye on this.

Im still throuple team all the way... But Avery gives me some very very weird shivers, like she's not just in the know, but also into some dangerous stuff...

She's also such a darn frigging perfect of a mommy it makes me doubt her reasons and motivations, specially cus she's always overstepping implicit boundaries. (Not that I dont like it, actually, the exact oposite was what made me wonder about what her deal really is.)

Anyway, she doesnt seem to be a huntress... But it could be bait...

Never drink something you didn't see the bartender make. Still hesitant around Avery tho I really want her to be part of Lucy's happy ending.

I wanna visit that market. I'm guessing the vampire baguette has blood mixed in.

Still think there's more to Avery than we've gotten so far but she seems nice. Maybe she's a cousin of the hunters from earlier. Maybe there was some old misunderstanding that caused a family scism over how to deal with monsters.

Can confirm Fiona isn't a switch, she just gives off the vibes of a playful big sister who joins in games and stuff rather than a Mummy who is in charge. ^_^

Wise words! But I think Lucy trusts this place because she's been before.

You'd probably be right regarding the food :P

Chapter 12: Opening Up

Arbitrio Sanguinis – LittleFallenPrincess

Thankfully, it didn’t take Avery long to finish her conversation with ‘Dave’ the gargoyle, and when our food was ready she walked over with it precariously balancing on her arms.

I was starving at this point, as the human food does nothing for my appetite, it’s mostly just for the taste for me. Right now I need sustenance, which I can only get from… well… you know.

So as soon as the sandwich lay in front of me, I took no time at all to devour it, only stopping once I had finished the last bite and I looked up at Avery, who was currently staring at me with a mix of shock and adoration. The final straw for me was when she started giggling, which just set me off blushing and trying to hide my face in my coat sleeve.

We talked for a good hour or so after I finished eating, with Avery going through a couple of cups of tea and me going through at least three milkshakes, before the market started dying down and I could tell it was getting a bit too late.

“How come everyone is packing up? It’s not even early morning yet.” Avery asked, confused as she looked around at all the people putting their stuff away and calling it for the day.

“We picked the one day of the month where they close early.” I replied.

“Oh really? Why?”

I was surprised that she didn’t know this already, considering how friendly she was with the gargoyle guy.

“The owners of this square give us the safety of this place for most of the month to trade, meet, eat, whatever. But in return, they need twelve hours once every month to perform a ritual.”

“A ritual? What kind? Why haven’t I heard of this?” Avery asked, sounding genuinely fascinated by this seemingly normal thing for us.

“Most monstrum these days don’t know, they’re too young to remember. Over time they forgot the true meaning of the market closing early and just assumed that that’s how it is.” I shrugged.

“I forget you’re probably a lot older than you look, being a vampire with eternal youth. How old are you exactly? Fifty? Sixty?” She asked.

“Try double that. And a bit more.”

“No… seriously? So you were born…”

“At the end of the 19th century, yes.”

“So you were around…”

“At the end of the Victorian era, yes.”

“Wow… what was that like?” She rested her elbow on the table and cupped her cheek with her hand as she stared at me… smiling.

I forgot that I hadn’t had this conversation with her yet, that I had been very vague about my past with her after I assumed she wasn’t aware of this world. And with Fiona, I didn’t have to talk about this part of me, as she was already a proper part of this world, meaning she knew others who had lived as long, if not longer, than me.

“It was… not fun. Especially not for a girl like me.”

“Girl like you?” Avery’s face changed, looking more concerned than content.

I fucked up again. First with Fiona, now with Avery. Maybe I should just come clean? Maybe I should just be honest about myself. If they can’t accept my past, then I don’t want to be with them. Maybe I’ll tell Fiona next time I see her, and I’ll tell Avery now.

“I’m… trans.” I sighed, clenching my fist, hoping that she wouldn’t respond negatively.

“Oh! I never would have guessed. I… oh… yeah… I bet that would have been very difficult back then. When did you manage to transition? As I assume there wasn’t much in the way of hormone replacement therapy or surgery back then…”

“It was after I was turned. Thankfully I was able to transition magically, something I know a lot of human trans women wish could happen to them.”

“I bet! Well hun, thank you for sharing that with me. You didn’t have to, and it must have been scary, but I’m proud of you. And before you start to worry, it doesn’t change a single thing about this thing we have between us. I still like you just as much as I did before.”

“I… thanks. Not gonna lie… I was a little bit nervous about telling people. I haven’t had to ‘come out’ in a long time. Well, except with my succubus friend recently. But before that, it was a long time since I told someone.”

Succubus friend? And here I thought knowing Dave was really special! But a succubus? You never hear of them these days.”

“You know about Succubi?” I asked, surprised that she knew about them.

“Only from the tales I read in books and in movies. How’d you two meet?”

“It’s a long story. But I think… we need to get going. They’re nearly done packing up, the ritual will begin soon.”

“Oh shi… I mean oh yes… we should head off. Especially as it’s getting late and I need to be up for work in the morning.” It was cute how she was trying not to swear in front of me, which just made me blush more.

“You’re working? Oh yeah… admin, right?”

“Clever baby! Good girl for remembering. And yes, so why don’t I walk you to a taxi and see if I’ve earned a goodnight kiss?”

“I… I think that… maybe you have…” I blushed once again as she stood up and held out her hand.

“So you never said what the ritual actually is…” She said, just before we got to the taxi rank.

“Oh it’s just the spell that keeps the market from being found by humans. At least the ones who don’t know about it already.”

“Oh… so that’s how it’s done! I thought it would have just been a one and done spell, but you say they have to keep casting it? Interesting… Sorry, I’m still new to magic. Supernatural creatures are one thing, but magic… that still blows my mind!”

“I’ll have to introduce you to my Witch friends.” I grinned.

“You have Witch friends too?” Who else do you know? What other monstrum don’t you know?” Avery laughed.

“I know all sorts. Maybe you’ll meet them one day.”

“Are they all…”

“They’re all littles and Mummies. Except Beatrice.”

“Who is Beatrice?” She asked, tilting her head gently, confused.

“Oh wow… I found someone who Beatrice hasn’t dated…” I laughed, much to the confusion of Avery. “Sorry… just… everyone knows Beatrice. I think you’d like her.”

“Well maybe I can meet them all sometime. For now, let's get you sent home safe, and maybe we can arrange another date sometime soon? Maybe a playdate? We didn’t actually get to do much Mummy/Baby stuff, and I’d love to get to babysit you, to see if we connect well on that level too. Because I’m hoping you agree… but we seem to connect on a personal level at least.”

“I… I think I’d agree with that analysis.” I blushed, stopping in front of a parked taxi with her.

Avery grabbed both my hands and lifted them up into the air.

“So… did I earn that kiss?” She asked, hope in not only her voice, but also her eyes, as she stared deeply into mine.

“I… think so…”

This perfect, gorgeous woman smiled at me, bent down, and planted a soft kiss on my hand, leaving a lipstick mark on it.

“Is that it?” I mumbled jokingly, hoping I wasn’t too forward with my flirting.

“Haha!” Avery laughed, “Don’t be greedy, little baby. There’s plenty of time for other kisses. But I’m not going to rush anything. You’re a perfect little baby and I want to make sure you’re comfortable and happy and not feeling anxious.”

“Then next time?”

“Next time, provided it goes well, you get a proper kiss. Okay?”

“Okay!” I smiled up at her, my face beaming.

“Now, get that soggy butt in the cab and get home safe. Make sure to text me, okay sweetpea?”

“I will… Thank you for tonight, Miss Avery. I’m glad we did this. It was a lot of fun. And… and I’m glad you know more about me. The real me, that is.”

“Me too, precious. Me too.”

-----------------------------------------------------------

“So… how’d it go?” Susie asked as she sat on Beth’s lap, who was currently relaxing in her large chair by their fireplace.

After I got back to the hotel, I found Abby and Grim had already gone to sleep, and I was about to call it early and head to my room but Susie was in the hotel’s kitchen sneaking some food up for her and her wife, and caught me passing by. Quickly ignoring her snacks, she grabbed me and threw me into the elevator, taking me up to their penthouse apartment, and sitting me down in the opposite recliner by the fire.

“It… went… well.” I blushed, smiling and trying to hide my happiness.

“She treated you well then?” Beth asked, always the protective one. She’s Susie’s Mummy, but like her sister… She is very protective of all the littles in her circle, especially me. Probably because I’m the only one without a partner.

“Uh huh.” I replied, nodding at my Mummy friend.

“So what did you do?” Susie asked, excitedly.

“We went around the markets.”

“Oh the human ones? I haven’t been there in forever. Mummy… we should go sometime!” Susie said, turning to her wife, who just lovingly smiled back at her.

“We will, sweetie. But Lucy…?” Beth asked, sounding like I was about to be in some sort of trouble…

“Yeah?” I replied, sheepishly.

“What were you doing taking a human to the monstrum market? I saw you entering just before I left earlier tonight.”

“She WHAT?” Susie burst out, quickly turning her gaze back to me in shock.

“I…”

“You know you’re not supposed to tell any…”

“I DIDN’T!”

Beth looked at me, like she didn’t believe me.

“SHE KNEW ABOUT US ALREADY!” I blurted out.

Thankfully, Beth’s suspicious frown eased off and was replaced by that of confusion.

“She knows? So… she knows you’re a vampire?” She asked me.

“Yeah…”

“And she’s okay with that?”

“...Yup. Seems like it.”

“And you’re sure she’s human?”

“Smells like a human, acts like a human.”

“Then how can you be sure she’s not a hunter, trying to trick you? Especially after you just had to move back here because of hunters?”

“Because she… I can’t explain it. She knows the gargoyle in the market, she knows some monstrum, she just… it's a lot of effort to go through just to hunt one vampire, right? She’s too… maternal. She gives off the same vibes as you or Victoria.”

And in that moment, Beth’s accusatory demeanour vanished, and she relaxed back in her chair.

“Oh, she knows Dave?” She asked.

“You know him too?” I asked, surprised.

“Who do you think recommended our current hotel chef to us? I trust Dave. If he vouches for this human, you have my approval.”

“I don’t need your approval!” I blurted out, realising I was acting very defensive about this woman that I honestly barely knew.

“Oh I know, sweetie. But you want it all the same, don’t you?”

“I… yes. I want you to get along. So…”

“So…?”

“So… Can she come to the Sanctuary?”

“I… let me talk to Dave about her first. Then you can invite her if he does actually vouch for her. Is that okay, Lucy?”

“I… yeah. She wanted to babysit me, to see if we connected on that level…”

“Then it would be good to be in a safe location. Invite her here. Once I’ve gotten Dave’s approval. You can have one of the spare rooms.”

“Not the playroom?” I asked.

“No, sweetie. The playroom is a safe space. Only those who I’ve met and approved myself can go in there. You know the drill.”

“Yeah… I understand.”

“But I’ll put some of the spare nursery items in a room for you, if you want.”

“You will? Eeeeee! That would be so good!”

“What about the werewolf? Fiona, was that her name?” Beth asked, suddenly swerving the conversation without me being ready for it.

“Yeah…”

“Why don’t you get her to babysit you too?”

“We’ve got a movie date in a few days.” I replied.

“Why not have a littlespace movie date? You practically already had a first date with her…” Susie suggested, finally speaking up.

“I… I guess… I…”

“Just ask her. If she doesn’t want to, then go on your boring vanilla date. But I think you’d both prefer to be snuggled up with you thickly padded and little, and her being all Mommy to you…” Susie said, grinning at me.

“I’ll ask her then.”

“Good girl.” Beth responded, making me blush. I swear at this rate my heart must be beating again considering how many times my face has turned red.

“I… should go message them both.”

“You can suggest a babysitting day to Avery, but no invites. Because if Dave says anything about her that I don’t like…”

“Then she doesn’t get access to the Sanctuary, I understand.” I replied, nodding and sliding off the recliner, landing on my feet and walking off.

“Night night, poppet.” Beth called out behind me.

“Nini Lucy!” Susie added.

I turned, waved goodbye to them, and walked off, closing the door behind me.

After a long elevator ride down to my floor, shuffling to my room and entering it, then closing and locking the door, I collapsed face-first onto my hotel bed, throwing my coat on to the end of it in the process.

“Gotta give it to Beth… she picked super comfy beds for this place. I always love staying here. One of these days I’ll ask her where I can get one for myself. Though honestly… Maybe I don’t. If I had one of these at home, I don’t think I’d ever leave.” I joked to myself, my voice muffled by the fact that my face was still planted deeply in the duvet.
