FoxNew
Hello people who know, please tell me. Explain what is the difference between these two things? I only know about the catheter; it was the only thing in my life. -Used in medicine. -There is a chance of getting an infection. -Short-lived. -Rubber. -It's easy to install. In some topics the item “Stent” is mentioned. What is it? Link to comment
bottlestop
In the cardiac world, a catheter is a balloon device that is used to expand / open the artery. A stent is a metal / mesh coil that is inserted to keep the artery open. I speak from experience, as I had six stents installed a couple of weeks ago. :-) 1 Link to comment
Little Sherri
When it comes to urinary tract installations, generally, a catheter is a temporary measure, whereas a stent is installed and left for a while. Catheters also nearly always protrude from the body at least somewhat, and are generally inserted by hand, without the aid of any tools or instruments, whereas stents nearly always require some tool or device for installation, and they generally do not protrude from the body once they have been installed. Some people make homemade stents that have a retrieval mechanism integrated into them, which is accessible outside of the body, so I guess those are catheter/stent hybrids? But if all the working parts of the device are entirely within the body, I'd still call it a stent. 1 Link to comment
Old_PA
On this site, a homemade urethral stent is rarely made from metal. 1 Link to comment
