Time Out If Not Active?

Recommended Posts

you will find a few just wating for one or two pwersons to show up . there are a few that have always on connnection and thay for get to log out.

one problem with chats that have timers is thay lose a lot of good ppl. you get called away fromt he computer for a few and your connection is lost. given a bad day on connecting and thay will never come back .

There have been many times when I get connected and then get halfway through typing something when the connection goes down leaving me logged in, this happened yesterday and since then I have not been able to get back in until my last attempt a few minutes ago.

What I am saying is be carefull if you do lock people out if they have not used the board in some time as there can be a lot of reasons as to why;-

Holidays away from home (I would not use another computer elsewhere)

Not available to use computer.

Computer in for repair.

Broken connections and the list goes on ! :badmood:

With me its all or nothing as I do not always get time to enter this site and partake of the various threads, other times I may have a few hours available and then love to look through them all.

"BE HAPPY IN YOUR NAPPY" :P

A particular person....who i will not name....once kicked me from a room because i hadn't typed anything for 20 minutes or so.......i knew immediately when i was kicked because i had been watching the room...waiting for anyone i might know to enter....or a chance to join the conversation of a few people i didn't know....

I never saw more the 4 maybe 5 people at most in that room...gee i wonder why........

i was told it was the room owners rule .....but i would wager to guess it was a big part of why that room didn't have the patronage that this room does.....

i never went back because it seemed ridiculus to me.....

I personally don't speak every minute i visit the room......sometimes i am watching the conversation without anything to say .... sometimes i am hoping a friend or two that i know will show up.....sometimes i am just busy and intend to return as quickly as possible....and by staying in the room i can check now and then to see what i'm missing and then join the conversation when i can.........

i've never noticed it....but i suppose someone could lurk for days at a time..........but wouldn't you also have to be there 24/7 to know if that person has been in or out at any point during that time?....i know there are often people ... often newbies who become so "obsessed" with a chatroom that actually do seem to be there almost 24/7........

i suppose if there were times that the room was too full like the old dpf room and you couldn't log in until someone left...then i could see it....but i've never received a "room is full" message from DD

just my opinion....but if i start getting booted from DD because i was lurking for 20 minutes or even 20 hours..........i wouldn't come back....

in my opinion...it's one of the ways mods can kill a room.........

thank you DD for keeping a self monitored chatroom.............thank goodness the majority of chatters here are mature enough to keep it that way....

i also go into the chat room to see who is there, and lots of times i will just sit and watch the conversation and wait for a point where i can jump in, and also, i will wait for a couple of people i know to come in...ive never seen a message that said the room is full yet...

I often don't feel apart of the dialog that is "currently" happening. I am a dl, and I can't get into the baby talk. However, I feel everyone has a right to be here be yee an ab or a dl like myself. We all have at least one common connection, and should welcome and respect each other.

i'd say leave the lurkers alone, they are here becouse they are interested in the topic... they are quiet becouse they are still uncomfortable with the issues personaly. and are most likely seeking comfort in the fact that they are not alone...

then there are just those who are after kicks, or laughs, or free porn pictures. but if dealing with those asshats makes one shy AB/DL lurker more comfortable with their issues, then it's a necessary evil in my honest oppinion.

so *wave to all the lurkers* feel free to chime in the discussion.

1. There is nothing that can be done

2. Their not harassing anyone

3. Leave them alone! Please :)

Rosie:

I would take the road that there is nothing that SHOULD be done....not that has been suggested here...

On the other hand, a little timer since a person last spoke might be nice...or maybe a "seems AFK" after an hour or two...nothing to change the operation of the chat, but something to give a bit of information.

My $.02!

Dill Pickle, you can discover for yourself when a member last 'spoke' by going to online list in Board Stats at the bottom of the Board Index. If you hold your cursor over the person's name (without clicking) it will show you the time they were last active.

Also, you can go to Last Click and look there. Hope this helps.

EDIT: I should have added that I don't find any need to use this facility, I just came upon it by accident (or should I say, my cursor found it). I believe people should feel free to come & go and speak when they want to without worrying that someone is watching them. But that's just my opinion.
