Okay, could use a couple people to help me out with the site while my current helpers are away dealing with personal stuff.

Looking for 1 board mod and 1 person to help me control spam on the megapics gallery.

I always love helping in the war on spam. kinda busy atm though, Coding a new toy. I could chuck an hour or so a day though. Will give me a break from staring at C all day long :-p

Every thought about adding a captcha to the registration / posting on the comments on the megapics board? I would say 90% of the spam is down to the fact that a account on the megapics board can be created without a human check nor a email test. Two things that could be simply added. (though email check is easily defeated, I also use captchas on the validate email link)

If you need any help gives a shout, I'll download and install coppermine on my testing server and mod the required files.

Edit: I would recommend putting a captcha on the comment submission form as well as the reg page also putting ip's from curtain countries into a "moderated" group to vet the posts. The common thought is the spammers hire low wage workers in places like china to complete the captcha on the reg pages. Because most spam bots tehese days also wait a while before spamming you have to consider the user database as hostle. there might be 10k users regged and 9k are legit but that still leaves the spammers with 1k of users not needing to pass the captcha if you only put it on the reg page.

You might also want to consider using api's from places like stopforumspam.com to score the ip's reg'ing / commenting.

Just a few ideas.

If anyone has any good reason against these choices you may contact me privately... but it has to be better than "I don't like him/her"

MJB: Checking out the captcha now to see if it will work with our current software version. Avoiding updating as it will corrupt our theme and I don't currently have a skinner to redo it.

I picked the version that should be compatable with the version you have installed (1.4.25) if not, gives a shout and I'll download 1.4.25 and poke and prod it till it works :-)

PHP is my second language (First being C then PHP then English even though English is my mother tongue).

keep an eye on it. watch if spam comes from new or old members. I happily help defeat spam, but us geeks aim for 99.99% success rate, we know it will never be perfect. but we aim to get close as possible. and the first line of attack is intel. gathering the info from where and how the spam comes from and working in methods to beat them. but there will always be a way to defeat the systems you put in place or it will catch the good guys too. Like i say if you ever want any coding advice in these systems drop me a line. My email is in the user DB ;-)

on another forum I moderate, we can usually tell the spammers the second they register by their name. some have viagra in the name, some have pharmasuticals (However you spell that fuckin word) in their name and don't post for a few weeks, then bam. Gotta love it when they find out their banned before they ever post. We're noticing a lot of spammers with # in their name now.

Found a bug in the recaptcha plug-in that allows you to create a account without having to complete the capctha. I'll have a look at the plug in later and see how easy it would be to patch the bug. I'll PM DailyDi with the bug.

OK. notso much a bug but the default options allow it, just need to change a config setting. Might be able to do it via the config page for the plug in too. PM'ed you the details

For now I have resolved the spam problem with the photo board. This may change with the new version.

Have you cleaned out the spam, or just stopped new stuff getting in?

If you've not gotten rid of the current stuff, a couple of creative regular expressions should go a long way.
