Selling Your House?

Recommended Posts

Priorities. Which is more important to you. Selling the house or spending the hour running around in nothing but an oversized diaper and pacifier in your mouth?

Is anyone else here trying to sell their house and find that realtors and potential buyers coming in to look at your place is really cramping your style?

How do you compensate for this?

I sold my house last year and having people find my diapers was a concern. But in the end, if anyone found them during a showing I didn't hear about it. In my last house I kept my reasonably small stash in two boxes in my closet, tucked unobtrusively off to one side. They looked innocent enough and I don't think anyone bothered to look in them. For the most part I think people are respectful of other's privacy.

But then again, so what if they find it? What's the worst that could happen?

I was renting a house that was up for sale about 25 years ago and that was no fun. We were getting calls from realtors at all hours and had to adjust our schedules to show the house. It was no fun at all.

All I can suggest is if this is your home that you are selling do whatever you can to make it a fast transaction. If you are renting the place then move elsewhere.

Put your things where they are not part of the house- like a box under the bed or in the dresser ;) Doors will be opened and people will look at what's behind them, so closets are out  If you were thinking of buying a house you'd do it too  Yeah, it's inconvenient, but you do what you have to in any kind of business to reap the best end of the deal for yourself B)

It's a tough market right now so I hope you do well

You tell the Realtor that they can only show the house from the outside, and the inside can be seen by appointment only, and tell them they must contact you 1 day before sending or bringing someone by.

Most people only do a drive by on the first look at a house.

No diapers in my story, but several years ago my wife and I were moving out of an apartment and into house. The apartment manager assumed we were at work and walked right in to show the apartment. Problem is, we were having sex on the couch. The idiot didn't even knock to be sure. Worst part is he didn't excuse himself and leave. He stood there and asked if it was alright to show them the apartment. Some people's children...

As beallucamp stated, when I was selling my house, I set viewing strictly by appointment, and the realtor gave me at least a days notice before a viewing. Unfortunately, this got a bit annoying, so I got the new property, moved into it (using a bridging loan) while my own house was on the market.

With actions like that, I'm surprised he didn't ask if he could join in too. :roflmao:

When it's time to retire this house, we'll probly drag it to a section of the pasture that's been bulldozed and set it on fire, then bury whatever didn't burn. Trailer houses aren't meant to last beyond one owner, and I'm the second owner... There probly won't be enough of a house left for a 3rd owner, anyway...

The last time I sold a house (1997) I just had my diapers in a plastic locker in the back of the closet. I also made sure I didn't leave plastic pants hanghing in the shower drying (been caught with that before). It was a hot smoking housing market in Nashville then and the house sold in 2 weeks so wasn't really that big of a deal; I had already closed on the new one and was in the process of moving. Now when I sold my house in So. Calif in 1993 because of a job transfer that was a very different experience. That took a year and 2 different real estate agents; I never want to go through that again. You just can't be totally neat and organized for that long, so gave up on any special effort. But once again the diapers had to be in a plastic chest out of view in the closet. Now if anyone had opened a certain bottom dresser drawer they would have seen plastic pants and cloth diapers.

As for showing the house; I was always whenever a potential buyer wants to see it. Selling a house is very disruptive your your personal life and you want as few obstacles as possible to reaching the goal of selling it. Case in point; the house in California sold on Christmas Eve 1993; yep the agent called and asked, well almost begged, to bring over the prospect. I just said I was cooking all day for the big family dinner but really didn't have a problem with it, though they were warned the kitchen was a bit of a mess. I always thought the apple pie in the oven, fireplace burning, christmas tree all it up, etc. closed the deal.

Anyway, back on subject, just keep ones diapers put away just like you would your underwear, sex toys and porn CDs. Yes, some noisy person may open a drawer here and there but it is very unlikely you will ever meet them so I wouldn't worry so much. Good luck

I got outed one time when I had a pair of plastic pants drying on the rail in the tub.

OMG, it was so embarrassing.

I'm glad I rent now.

For some reason, I don't care about owning a home anymore.

Other than maybe a condo some day.

When I first saw the OP, I thought he was being silly - how to be compensated for the crimp in your diaper style. I've sold a couple houses but just didn't run into these kinds of problems. Of course you need to insist on advance notice for showings and this will certainly crimp your style a little. It'll mean picking up and packing away your stuff and even then, I wouldn't be surprised if some people looking at houses don't open drawers and peek when the realtor isn't looking.

I say an interesting on-line article the other day about house-cleaners and how they LOVE to dig through drawers and closets etc (not all house cleaners of course!). That's another whole issue, isn't it? But the point is similar - if you've got stuff you don't want people to see, you've got to be careful where you leave it!

And YES, selling your house will put a crimp in your style - you may not want to leave that open bag of diapers next to your bed and if you're going out, you'll have to take your plastic pants out of the bathroom. God forbid you're selling your house and have an entire room set aside as a nursery!! No one's mentioned that yet. Can you imagine the 'crimp' THAT would put in your style - especially if you're close to 24/7 AB!!

Even if you don't really care if people know about your diapers and gear, when you're selling a house you have to be concerned about how the people viewing the house see your house. If they walk in and see bondage gear set up all over the place they may freak and not want to look further at the house. You can do all the philosophy you want about they need to look at this or think that or respect your rights to do whatever, but THEY are the ones who will decide whether or not to consider buying the house.

The problem for renters is much worse of course...witness the story of DprdJeff!! Your actual rights may vary place to place, the stated policies about showing the place may vary, and of course, what the individual landlord may or may not do inspite of all the above is something else again! Your best bet is to try to talk with whoever is going to be in charge of showing the place and try to explain why it'll be in their best interest to give you at least several hours (if not 24 hrs) notice of a showing! - if need be, just repeat DprdJeff's story!24.gif
