Save Water

Recommended Posts

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -- New TV ads are encouraging Brazilians to save water - by urinating in the shower. Brazilian environmental group SOS Mata Atlantica says the campaign, running on several television stations, uses humor to persuade people to reduce flushes. The group says if a household avoids one flush a day, it can save up to 4,380 liters (1,157 gallons) of water annually.

SOS spokeswoman Adriana Kfouri said Tuesday that the ad is "a way to be playful about a serious subject."

The spot features cartoon drawings of people from all walks of life - a trapeze artist, a basketball player, even an alien - urinating in the shower.

Narrated by children's voices, the ad ends with: "Pee in the shower! Save the Atlantic rainforest!"

I never understood the need to "save water" it never leaves the earth, and lots of society already drinks water filtered from sewage and ocean, its not like we will run out of something thats infinitly recyclelable. Have I missed something? Perhaps I should post links to info about water treatment plants?

Its more about reducing demand so as to conserve water in the reservoir(s) in dry climates. Telling someone the amount of water on the planet is a constant won't endear you to anyone who's well/reservoir has just run dry.

If they have a reservoir that is not being replenished then it is innevitable, if their reservoir is being depleted to quickly to be replenished then still it is inevitable, unless replenishing is sped up. you can't stop growth of consumption without stoping growth of population, all we can do is focus on increasing our rate of replenishing faster then rate of consuming/populating. With population growing exponentialy this too becomes an innevitability that we will fail, unless population control is introduced, perhaps another world war. If you disagree then youtube exponential growth, its implications of our population is realy mind blowing.

Think drought conditions. If there's not enough water supply, people will be encouraged to conserve water, so's not to cause a problem of having to do things like trucking in water to ensure that people will have enough to drink. Toilet and bath water comes from the same place as tap water. In some cases, the water company may actually shut off a wasteful home's water or fine them for wasting water. In severe drought conditions, these people may wind up in jail.

Certainly there is a finite amount of water on the planet... however the amount of clean potable water changes daily. As population grows, so does demand for clean water.

Now why humanity is stupid enough to use perfectly good potable water to flush away waste or irrigate the yard I'll never know. That is indeed wasteful and environmentally irresponcible.

But here in america , even if we were to conserver more water. Its not like theyre going to ship it over to the places that really need it. The places that need it dont usually have the money in the first place. Thats not an excuse to intentionally waste as much water as you can , but still. We dont need to go that far out of our way to conserve water that someone else is just going to use.

I'm not quite sure what your last sentence says, but yes implications of our population growth is really mind blowing. There are far too many people on this planet who don't want their minds blown and so won't even think about it. All you really need to do is think about putting more and more people into a particular room - no matter how big the room may be, it eventually gets crowded, overheated and uncomfortable for its occupants. Sure the world is a big place, but as we inhabit more and more of it, there are less and less desireable places to put people.

I too have used your reasoning on the amount of water in the world, but we are already moving water to a lot of places in the world that don't naturally have a ready, easy supply of water there. The mere fact that there may (or may not) be a constant amount of water on the planet certainly doesn't mean the world can support unlimited growth! Imagine a gallon jug of water...enough for you alone for how long? Now how long will it last if you have to share it with one other person? ...two others? ...ten others? Get the picture? Is it mind-blowing?

In your mind, does replenishing a source = creating new water?? Isn't that the effort in desalinization of sea water? Even so, how much of that can we do? For how long?

Yep...mind blowing!
