After untraining, bladder control is like paddle shifters on a car with an automatic transmission

1. Paddle shifters seem like a useful feature at first.  For most of us, we needed to have bladder control to get through schooling.

2. Paddle shifters are meant to give the driver an illusion of control.  Yet the computer stops you from doing anything that would damage the transmission. All the time I hear people complaining they still have bladder control, even though they’ll have accidents if they go without a diaper.

3. If you chose to use the paddle shifters but you forget to shift, it’s okay the computer will take over.  If you chose to hold it in and you forget, it’s okay your diaper will keep you dry.

4. The manufacturer doesn’t expect anyone to use the paddle shifters. Once you’re unpotty trained no one expects you to control your bladder.

5. Paddle shifters make you appreciate your car’s automatic transmission. Being incontinent makes you appreciate your diapers.

In your analogy, paddle shifters are more like refastenable tapes on diaper: they give you the illusion that, if you wish so, the diaper can be taken  off like “normal underwear” when you need to go potty, but then why bother with the old style toilet when you’re already wearing one?
