Just from recent experience if you lay down in a hospital bed they have to put the side rails up I am not certain but I think it's just a liability issue.

The last time I was discharged from the ER, while in a standard bed, as the nurse was dropping the side rails she says, "Here, I'll let you out of your adult crib."

My GF and I shot each other a knowing smile, but I just wasn't quick enough to toss in a diaper joke.
