what exactly is Iirratable Bowel Syndrome? I know that i have very very very irregular bowel movements, meaning i dont know when im going to have to go. There have been times where i cant make it to a bathroom, and i do crap my pants. I wouldnt consider it incontinence, only because i know that its comming, but i dont have anywhere to use the bathroom. I actually keep a couple pairs of boxers and shorts in my car for an emergency situation. That very rarely happens, i mean like once or twice a year that happens and i cant help it. i dont think its a medical problem, and the accidents happens so rarely that i couldnt get away with wearing diapers all the time for that one rare time a year.

It's probably worth checking on your situation with a doctor...as there are several ways to cause what you describe, and you want to ensure that nothing more serious is going on that needs taking care of. It also sounds fairly inconvenient, and a decent doc can help you with the tools to change the way things work.

I got "diagnosed" with IBS about 8 years ago...in considerable pain in a specific part of my guts quite a bit. Thousands of quarts of gatorade later, with fiber in them, and about as many bentyl/dicyclomine tablets later, my case has largely resolved...probably due to my regular Dr noticing a minor vitamin D deficiency and getting me to supplement it.

At the time of diagnosis, and after a colonoscopy and a small bowel followtrhough (eat barium cement, get fluoroscopy), it was explained to me that clearly something was wrong, but they didn't know exactly what, so they treated symptomatically. That is, all the things that cause the gut not to work aren't all that well understood or testable for.

There were certainly stressors (including pneumonia) that lead me to get treatment for the occasional pain. Like a very large number of IBS patients, I can point to a specific incident where the chronic pain got started...I was in the ER, about to go to surgery for appendicitis, I actually had food poisoning, when the IV fluids let the natural processes of the gut take care of the blockage and move it out the far end. On that basis, I'm fairly sure there's a scar somewhere in my intestine, and I'm pretty sure that was what was hurting.

I can also tell you that one of my worst incidents of pain involved dinner with my boss and another coworker I did not trust. No question, there is a mind component to what happens in the guts, but equally, no question that the mind isn't completely under conscious control.

So IBS is real...but not a true diagnosis...and even the docs who give the diagnosis know it and do it by elimination.

just a thought... quoting wikipedia in a thread where people are actually concerned with legit medical evidence... not the best thing to do...

wikipedia is not an acceptable source when discussing true medical knowledge/information....

Christine, i must say, you are a joy to the community. you are a psychologist, doctor, and professional instigator. all rolled up into a nice ball of K.I.A (know it all).

while someone comes onto these boards to discuss what their doctor has said, you feel the need to write long posts (witch at this point in my forum browsing i know just to skip) about how there is not a soul who could passably be smarter than you, including doctors and specialists who have actually done it for years. Why dont you let them do their jobs, and be constructive to the community? maybe say something like "that's sad to hear, i wish you well" or "get better soon" instead of telling everyone they are wrong and their disorders are fake.

i am sure you mean well, but no one wants to hear it, or your posts would be positive reputation, not massive amounts of negative. please take this as constructive criticism, and perhaps see why people are annoyed by you?

and as a last comment, to the OP. please get well. IBS can be very troublesome.
