I met a girl while volunteering the other day, but she is 3 years younger than I am. so legal things aside, do you think its weird to date somebody 3 years younger than you?

So im 19, shes 16. but think proportionally aswell, such as if i was 17, she would be 14. or if i was 21 she would be 18.

If she's 16 and you're 19, I guess it'd be okay to date as long as you two aren't having sex - because I think the law is, that if someone over the age of 18 is having sex with a minor, that's statutory rape...I don't know the full details, though. I would suggest that you be careful. As to your question, no, I don't think it's weird to date someone 3 years younger than you.

It depends on where you live - the age of consent in most states of the U.S. is 16, and so even sex is technically legal. You would have to see the law in your particular state. Nevertheless - I would not see the point to dating a 16 year old when you are 19. It seems to be that emotionally/mentally, etc you are already at different stages of life - done with high school (I hope) and looking to your future career/education - whereas the 16 year old enamored of a older guy who has yet to finish high school. It could be fun for a while though - but I would feel the need to get away from high school.

atleast in IL the age of consent is 17, but I do know there is a 3 year leancicy rule.. I've only dated older women and men anyway.

The link above is a list of age of consent laws in the US. A little over half of US states are 16, the rest are 17 or 18. In some states there is a age difference exception, so that it's legal even if one person is underage as long as the age difference is less than a certain number of years. (usually less than 3) You need to find out and follow the law on this one. Even if she's fine with it, her parents or someone else might not be, and could put you in a world of hurt quite easily.

Also, remember that federal law is 18. Porn and internet communications are generally federal jurisdiction. It may be legal for you to have sex with her in your state, but illegal to simply talk dirty in a chat room or instant messenger.

Legal issues aside, the problem that I would see is if she's naive for her age and / or you're taking advantage of her. But I've met 16 year olds who were smarter, more mature, and more world-wise than many 19 year olds, so if she's a smart girl AND it's legal, I don't think it's weird. There is the issue that Azdl mentioned about different stages of life, but I don't think that would apply to everyone.

But once you get older, a three year age difference is nothing.

Wait her father won't allow her to date, but she's had "many" boyfriends? then you say: "so obviously it would be possible to date." I'm confused Just how many "boyfriends" can a 16 year old have had...and better yet why? Kinda throws a flag out there, if you get my meaning.

Personally at that age I would find someone else, I was 19 and my high school girlfriend was 17, but we dated for 5 years. It was cool with her parents, up until she got pregnant. Luckily her father was cool about it, her mother not so much! Fortunately she turned 18 in two weeks so no charges were filled.

Anyway age difference doesn't bother me, my wife is 6 years younger than me, but in your situation, I would be arrested..so go with what you know...just keep it on the high side of the law!!!

3 years is almost nothing in terms of age diff. My gradparents are 8 years apart. My Cousin who also just got married 3 years ago is 8 years older than his wife(they were 19 and 27 at the time).

hey i've seen some pretty damn hot 16 year olds in my area, some of them will fool you like they were 18... so yeah, definitely not immoral or pedophilic. it only gets bad if you're dating a girl with no car, no permit, no boobs, and still wears limited too.

3 years can be a big difference in age depending on the ages we are talking about - the younger you are, the bigger the difference 3 years can make. Clearly when people reach more mature stages in life, 3 years or more is no big deal, but we are not talking about people who have reached a mature stage in life. As I said a 16 year old is still in high school - a nineteen year old - not. This is a big difference in life circumstance.

Since this girl's father does not permit her to date, and yet she seems experienced - I would definitely stay away. She is trouble with a capital T.

I had a crush on a girl nine years older than me when I was eight, but I thought it would work out since my neighbors are 12 years apart but happily married. I don't see a problem with three years.

I've seen a story where a guy dated an underage he 19, and she was 16 or 15 and he was convicted of rape or something and automatically added to sexual predator list.

As for being 3 years apart, that's not bad. I won't date anyone younger, I go for 3-10 years older, so 3 years sounds good to me.

As for sex, that's up to you, just beware of the laws and such. But again, 16 and 19 aren't bad.

I've dated 6 years older and married someone 14 years younger. As long as it is legal in your area, enjoy. My 19 year old has dated someone who is 43. All I cared about is he treat her well.

I think the gap can widen as you get older. Sky and Silver are 25 and 41, that's okay, I'm 39 and would date a 25 year old (don't think my wife would like it though, lol.) But if it was say 31 and 16, or 26 and 16 I don't think that would be cool, and dare I say it a little embarrassing? I think a 60 year old and 40 year old or a 35 year old and 25 year old are kind of on each others wave length, but a 25 year old and a 16 year old are so different.

I dont see it as a problem. Though legal age for sex is 16 in UK. I was 16 when I got with my bf and he was 20. But I was legal so it was ok. lol.

I agree. I think the older you get, the less age differences matter. Sky and I are so alike in regards to maturity levels, we just tend to compliment each other. We get along so well. :}
