James and Lily Johnson were a couple in their early 30’s and we’re all in all very content. They had a wonderful daughter named Aurora who was now seven years old. Though it had taken quite a few years to conceive their daughter which meant that having another biological child was out of the question due to how much it affected the couple. When Aurora was very small the couple had tried fostering, but decided to close their home. It was too difficult for them to raise a toddler while also dealing with social workers and everything that came with a foster child.

Now that Aurora was seven, the couple had decided to open up their home again. They’d declined a few infants and some older children, being firm on wanting to preserve birth order by having their biological child be older than any incoming children. Finally after a few months of the extra bedroom being ready and empty, they’d decided to accept the placement of a five year old girl named Samantha. After only a day to make final preparations and tell Aurora, she’d be arriving any moment now.

James rushed to the door as soon as he heard a knock, having been cleaning up the kitchen in preparation for the arrival. “Honey!” He called to his wife before opening the door to greet the social worker. “They’re here!” He welcomed the social worker and little girl into the living room and guided them to the couch.

Samantha nervously entered the new house after some prompting by the social worker. She had long and thick wavy black hair that went past her shoulder blades. She was wearing pink and white overalls with a lavender shirt with frilly short sleeves underneath along with pink and purple AFOs and pink sneakers that looked at least one size too small, all of her clothes seemed to be quite dirty, or at least dingy and stained. She kept her head down as she used her sparkly purple forearm crutches to walk to the couch. She could tell that James was staring at her and that made her even more nervous.

Lily was rather anxious, Nervously cleaning already clean parts of the house as they waited for the doorbell to ring. They were finally gonna addd another member to their family and she wanted everything to be perfect. As she heard the knock at the door she took a deep breath before heading to join her husband at the door. She made it into the room as the social worker and the little girl made it into the room. She smiled at the two wanting them to feel welcome In their home. She watched the 2 as they walked in quickly looking over the girl and seeing she could use some new clothes and couldn’t wait to take her shopping hoping she would enjoy it. She took a seat on the couch so they could talk

The social worker sat down with the couple and Samantha and smiled. “So, as I said on the phone, Samantha is 5 years old and has cerebral palsy. She doesn’t have great control of her legs but her trunk and arm muscles are strong and functional. She uses her crutches to get around and wears AFOs, a kind of brace to help her stand and walk better. Luckily, all of her equipment is up to date and fairly recent. She entered care a few days ago because her mother passed away recently.” She explained kindly, motioning toward Samantha when appropriate. “Relatives were able to take in her siblings but didn’t feel they could care for Samantha.” When she finished explaining she looked at the couple. “Are there any questions or concerns?”

Samantha was doing her best not to fidget and squirm but she felt anxious and uncomfortable. Her world had just gotten completely turned upside down the past few days and everything was happening so fast. She missed her mother and her siblings, but she knew her aunt and uncle didn’t want her because she was different. She hoped this new family would be nicer than the group home she’d stayed at previously for a few days. She stared down at her lap and did her best to stay quiet, her cheeks hot as she heard the social worker talk about her.

Lily listened to the social worker and was heartbroken for the little girl. All of her siblings taken by family except for her. They would have to get in contact with them so she could still see them and intended to tell her husband about this as soon as possible. As the social worker ended and asked if they had questions Lily looked up.” Can we have the contact information for the relatives we would like her to stay in contact with her siblings “ she said “ but other than that i think we’ll be fine” she said as she smiled at the social worker

“We will do our best to get you that contact information when we can.” The social worker said. Once there were no more questions, she set down the small backpack next to Samantha and left.

Samantha kept her head down and stayed quiet, not knowing if it was okay for her to talk yet or not.

“Well, let’s show you around and you can meet our daughter.” James said cheerfully.

Lily nodded and watched as the social worker Lwdt before turning to Samantha.” Well hi Samantha I’m glad you’re joining our family were happy to have you in Lily” she said smiling at the girl wanting her to feel welcome before the home tour. She hoped the girl would feel welcomed and open up
