Help with constipation?

Recommended Posts

Hello there,

I am 24 as of typing this and I have struggled with severe constipation for most of my life. My doctor hasn't been much help with giving me a plan for treating it and I'm hoping someone here can tell me what's helped them. On the stool type scale I'm mainly between a type 1 and 2.

I have fiber (pills and powder), glycerin suppositories, pre/probiotic gummies, and equate Walmart brand stool softener with stimulant. I have tried drinking between 60oz and 120oz of water and it just makes me need to pee. I have less than 3 movements a week. I really don't want to take a stool softener regularly unless it's safe for me to, I don't want to risk developing a dependence on it. I'm not really able to go out and get much exercise where I live, but I have been practicing squatting more often. Let me know if I need to give any more info.

sounds like your doing every thing I know to do check in to softeners or stimulant's. I have IBS and have never been regular and often after the movement the next day or two are just the opposite.

It is normal to poop anywhere from once every three days to three times a day. If it's not causing you any pain you may be making a bigger deal out of it than it really is. If it is causing pain keep talking to your doctor. Ask for a referral to a GI specialist. They know a lot more than a bunch of strangers on the internet.

Do you consume a lot of caffeine? It is a diuretic and you could be peeing out the fluids before they can help with your bowel movements.

What is your diet like? Do you eat lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains? Personally I find eating things like potatoes, apples, and pears with the skins left on makes for larger, softer bowel movements because the skins have lots of fiber. Pretty much any fruits and vegetables will help. If all else fails, over indulge in some watermelon or cantaloupe... if the water and fiber in them doesn't get things moving, the sugar will. (Watch out for bananas though, they can bind things up which is why they're recommended for diarrhea.) Oatmeal is also a great source of fiber, as is popcorn.

Exercise is really important too. I'm not sure why you can't go out and exercise (even just walking is good!) but there are a lot of exercises you can do at home with limited or even no equipment.

Everything LIttle Lindsey said, but especially the part above. If you're really worried, ask your doctor for a referral to a specialist.

You could try adding prunes or prune juice to your diet. Or a little bit of castor oil (it's a stimulant laxative so I'd recommend consulting your doctor about this since they know you better than strangers on the internet do).

If you can, speaking with a nutritionist may be helpful too.

i know a way to help but i dont think you would like it, it involves slapping the shit outa you! haha ok with that joke made if it is a struggle to go, if you get discomfort go to your doctor, or as advised try eating prunes, and continue to drink plenty of water, i recommend the doctor idea, or its 5 across da eyes!

edit: you could leave hotdogs out for several hours before you eat them, rough as 40 grit on the belly, but great for the waistline and colon! hahahahahaha(i speak from accidental personal experience)

Apple juice, prune juice.  If you can drink them room temp they work better.  Eat lots of fruits and veggies.  Maybe get a squatty potty stool (it is easier to poop in the squatted position).  Exercise helps as well too

Get on a fiber routine.  2 to 3 doses again.  Drink lots of water and eat a reasonable diet. Those diapers will be sagging in no time.   And constipation will be a past replaced with very regular predictable and big semi firm poops!

My solution for this is to eat unsalted, de-shelled sunflower seeds - as long as your not allergic. I eat small portions a couple times a day and haven't had to deal with constipation for a long time. A 10 oz package lasts for about a week or so and costs about $2.50 to $3 depending on the store. It's a completely natural solution.

Usually I take the pills since it's easier for me. The maximum I can take for each dose is 5 pills. I've also tried Activia yogurt and hoping that helps a little more too.
