Helping Casey (Private w/ Wannatripbaby)

It was mid afternoon in a small town in upstate New York. The Richard family was preparing for their new addition. But it wasn’t a baby as most would expect. They were waiting for a seven year old named Casey to come to their home to be fostered.

Casey was 7 years old and rather small. She relied completely on her motorized wheelchair, being severely impacted by cerebral palsy. She could not speak or do almost anything for herself. She was in diapers full time as she had no ability to control her bladder or bowels. She didn’t even attend a regular school. She used to attend a residential school hours from home, but after a few months, Casey’s mother insisted and fought until Casey came home and was homeschooled. Well this is what everyone thought that is.

Casey was being put into foster care because of suspicions of child abuse from her mother. Her mother never let Casey out of her sight except for school. Anytime the girl was home, her mother was with her, Casey not even being allowed to play with other children.

What was soon discovered was that Casey’s mother had Munchausen by proxy syndrome. Which basically meant that her mother purposely made Casey seem and become sick. Casey had been taken in by her mother when she was very small, having been orphaned before Casey could remember anything. Whenever it was time to go to a doctor or specialist, Casey’s mother insisted on being in the room and would refuse to let Casey speak. Casey was never allowed to speak outside of the home. Her mother convinced everyone that she was incapable of doing so. Whenever a doctor or teacher raised suspicions or concerns, Casey’s mother would move onto a new doctor until they found one that would do what she wanted.

The social services agent had just finished briefing the Richards on Casey. The family would have to completely teach the girl how to do everything a girl her age should. The only thing that was true about what everyone was told about Casey before, was that she did have cerebral palsy, though she wasn’t affected by it nearly as much as everyone thought. Casey could walk and talk normally, but was never allowed to outside of the home when no one was around. In reality, Casey would only require a leg brace to correct an inward turned leg to be able to walk like a typical child, not the use of a wheelchair.

Casey still didn’t understand what was going on. She didn’t know why her mother made her not talk or walk, or why she was never allowed to go anywhere. The reason she was now in foster care, was that Casey’s home teacher called CPS because it seemed Casey was being severely neglected, not being changed for days and losing a lot more weight than she should. Casey looked around, unsure of what to think. She was told her mother wasn’t treating her well so she was going to live with a new family.

Amanda Richard frantically ran about the house making sure everything was spotless & perfect. She had cleaned, dusted, and polished just about every surface in the house twice now. She was so nervous & so excited to bring Casey into her home.

She and her husband Bill had long talked about adopting another child. They had one son named Gideon who was 15 years old now and could pretty much take care of himself. She was a mother at heart and missed having a baby to care for and dote over. They had originally planned on adopting an actual baby, but as soon as Amanda saw Casey she knew she was the one. It was as if God himself had told her so, which she believed he had.

It took some convincing, but her husband did agree that the girl deserved a good home and that they could provide one. She wasn't quite sure how her son felt about it. He could be hard to read sometimes. On the outside he had agreed that they should take her in if that's what his mother wanted. He seemed to be at least a little excited to have a sister, but also perhaps a bit nervous, which was very unlike him.

Amanda's heart almost skipped a beat when she heard the social workers pull into their drive way. "She's here!" She ran to the door to let in her new daughter.

Casey was still in her wheelchair since she didn’t walk that great and would need forearm crutches for a while. She was a bit overwhelmed by everything going on. She sat in her chair, looking around the living room she had entered with the social worker. She didn’t really know what to think. She stayed silent, mostly out of habit, but also partly because she was shy and nervous.

The social worker helped get Casey’s chair up the front steps and shook hands with the Richards. She was glad to have found a foster home for the girl, since most parents didn’t want a child with a disability, let alone one they’d have to completely rehabilitate.

After explaining everything one more time to the family, the social worker left, having put Casey’s bag next to her chair. She hoped everything would be ok and she wouldn’t have to come back and find the seven year old another foster home. She headed back to her office to move onto another child.

Casey was very nervous. She was in pale pink leggings and a purple T-shirt, her diaper not hard to make out underneath. She didn’t really know what to think, especially about he fact that she’d be with new parents, probably forever. She still didn’t quite know how her mother wasn’t treating her properly, but didn’t want to argue with anyone.

She looked up at Amanda and Bill, wondering if she was expected to start the conversation, or what was going to happen.

They both lean down in front of your wheel chair. Amanda puts her hand on yours. "Welcome home, Casey. I know you're probably nervous and maybe a little confused. But I promise, everything is gonna be okay."

"Yeah," Bill says, "You're gonna be well taken care of and loved in this house. You're actually not our first adopted child."

"Yes, you have a brother named Gideon. He's at school right now. But I promise, he'll love you just like we do. He wanted me to let him stay home so he could meet you when you arrived, but I didn’t want to overwhelm you."

Casey looked very overwhelmed. She spent almost all of her time cooped up in the house, so having two doting parents was very much a change for her. She just nodded, unsure what to say, especially since the nice social worker lady had already left.

She nodded, hearing about her brother. She didn’t have any siblings, so she didn’t really know what having one would be like.

She looked around the house, unsure what it would be like to live there. She’d have to get used to not being in her chair 24/7. She could walk, just her legs were weak, from both cerebral palsy and not being allowed to walk most of the time.

She looked down and then back up. Casey seemed very hesitant, but quietly asked. “Can I get up?” She asked nervously.
