Having trouble viewing notifications on mobile

I believe I've received a message or notification of some kind, but when I tap it, the screen grays out. I tried panning to the right, and I have a suspicion that the Tapatalk ad might be covering it. Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 with latest Chrome browser. Screenshot attached.

Possibly just a coincidence but does using Cloud VPN make any difference? becuase I don't get any ads like tapatalk or whatever coverting up my messages

I found a workaround. There is a miniature X to the left of the tapatalk advertisement. This dismisses the ad and lets me see my notifications.
