As promised!

Took a look through my photo album. Up until I was about 1, I cannot find any picture of me in anything but just a pinned cloth diaper. After that I see various homemade-looking cloth diaper covers. Did not see any rubber or plastic pants directly, although I assume something was sewn inside the covers. The last picture I could find with me in a diaper cover was when I was 3, then by 4 I see underwear. I'll scan some pics but it'll take a bit of time.
Edit: Just to keep this on-topic: I spent last night in 2 baby pants prefolds and the new gary active PUL pants. Still quite comfortable in the morning, and I have some capacity left. Working well!

When I was a baby I was in cloth diapers. I am not sure if they were the only reasonable option then ('78), or if my mom was just being stubborn. She raised us on natural foods, minimal sugar, environmentally conscious, etc. I remember her growing bean sprouts (yum), grinding wheat and making bread, etc. So, if there were an option, I could easily see her rejecting disposables, even if they were easier. I have several baby photographs of myself in cloth diapers. Photos weren't as good back then, but my recollection is that in most of the pictures I had no plastic pants on at all. Maybe she changed me as soon as I was wet (was that what some people did)? But, I seem to remember a pic of me at grandma's house with plastic pants on. So now you have me curious, I will have to break out my baby photos and research this! If I find a plastic pants pic, I'll share it
In the present, my overriding goal was to find something to help me keep my bed dry at night. I'm attempting to not have to wake up every hour to go to the bathroom. Not sure if I can accomplish that goal, but with the previous pants I was in pain by the morning which disrupted my attempts and I never made progress. I'll be able to test these out tonight. Wish me luck!

Got the GaryWare Active Brief (PUL) in XL (figured that 2XL was pushing my luck for a 38" waist). The leg elastics are snug but I don't feel them at all. It goes way up in the back, covering my diaper no problem (no more folding down in the back is necessary). I'd almost forget I have them on, except for the loud rustling whenever I move . I haven't tried them overnight yet, but so far they seem perfect. Thanks a lot!

Angel wing is the only one I've found that was comfortable for me. I also like that the front is easily adjustable.

Pepperoni and cheese.

I'll try the Gary PUL pants with enclosed leg elastics. I've been told they are kinda noisy, which appeals to me. Thanks again everyone for helping me choose my pants! I'll be sure to report back once I get them.

I'm a flooder. I was curious how well a thick cloth prefold handled that, so one time I let loose in a dry diaper without plastic pants on. It basically reacted very similarly to if I had wet a pair of undies. Once the local area becomes saturated, a stream forms, so I had to quickly stop myself before I made a mess. And of course, once that part is wet, any further floods will be even more apt to escape. For flooders, I believe plastic pants play a critical role in absorption and leak control, even when a diaper is fresh.
The reason I want a high back, is with the normal back I have to tuck the back of the diaper inside itself to even be covered by the plastic pants. That works okay (barely covers when folded down), but if I try to wear multiple diapers, that is too uncomfortable as I now have a bulge at the small of my back.
It is definitely a possibility that these leg holes are too small, because they feel tight. I feel as if the entire pant is too small. I did not have any cloth diapers when I ordered it and blindly trusted the sizing chart. Next time I'll definitely be measuring with two diapers on, and if there are multiple ranges, I'm going with the biggest one.
As for wider elastics, I hope that would prevent digging in as much, and also hope it would also help control weeping.
Thanks again for the new suggestions! I'll definitely explore everything I'm given.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far! I've looked into several. Babykins doesn't seem to have a high back option. The Suprima with wide elastics aren't high back either. The Euroflex don't have a high back. The A C Medical pants seem to have every imaginable combination, and have high back with wide elastics. Thanks Christine, I'll probably give those a try!

I used the pink Rit liquid dye. They faded a bit because I didn't boil them. I couldn't handle wearing briefs, so I'm going to do this again with some boxer briefs. Maybe I'll try to do it on the stove this time.

I'm looking for a new pair of plastic pants. The elastics on these baby pants pp are too narrow and dig into my legs. Hoping for something with wide and soft elastics. Also want a high back. Any ideas?

Here are a few idea, but I'm pretty sure none of them are healthy options, so maybe someone can chime in with better ideas:
1) Eat less fiber
2) Drink less water
3) Hold it in
4) Pepto Bismol

Choctawboi,
Here is something to consider: Life IS all about YOU. You are the most important person in the entire world. What you need is the most important thing. Without you, nothing else matters. Without you, nothing else even exists. That might sound conceited, but it is a fundamental truth.
Now, that's not to say other people and things don't matter. They do, a lot. But, they only matter because they matter to you. What is important to you essentially defines your existence. It is admirable that you care so deeply about the people in your life. Never change that. The people and things you care about and things you can do are what make you unique.
But, don't forget to care about yourself too, because you are #1 and you come first*. If there is a conflict of priorities, make sure that you are the one that ultimately comes out on top!
* This obviously gets more complicated with kids, but I assume that you don't have any.

Also hoping I get used to the flavor as I once hated the taste of diet soda, which I learned to love due to gaining a lot of weight by drinking lots of regular soda. I know I should get off that also, but one thing at a time.
Diet soda is actually counterproductive. What happens is that the fake sugar alters the bacterial colonies in your gut, and the result can be glucose intolerance. http://www.shalomlife.com/health/26470/israeli-study-says-diet-soda-can-lead-to-diabetes-and-obesity/

I've gone through those body scanners with an absolutely soaked diaper on (no choice- was running late). I still had absolutely no trouble getting through security.
Brian, when I think of you flying, this happens, I can't help it!

Got the stuff for this back in April 2013 (although briefs instead of boxer-briefs). Something must have come up, because I forgot all about it! Was digging through an old box and found everything. Got it done today!

I recently got some cloth diapers myself. Some observations from a fellow newbie:
Get high-backed plastic pants.. otherwise you'll have to fold the diaper down in the back so the pants kinda cover it, badly.
Diaper size charts are highly misleading. According to the Baby Pants charts, the diapers I got should go to something like a 44" waist, *after* washing. I am a 36" and the ones I bought are a tight fit. You'll pay more for shipping, but it might be worthwhile to buy a single diaper and try it before buying any more of that size.
Some extra expenses you might not have factored in: You don't really want to wash diapers with your normal clothes, due to using hot water for wash. You'll usually have to rinse twice to get all the detergent out. Diapers take upwards of 90 minutes to dry. If you use the clothesline to dry, they won't be as soft and they will collect unsightly lint. You'll also need to invest in some kind of sealed container or diaper pail with a lid, because wet cloth diapers become overpoweringly ammonia smelly after just a couple days sitting. You'll need a steady supply of baking soda or such if you wish to try to counteract the smells. Also be prepared with vinegar to put in the wash. I found myself using a lot more baby powder than I used to. Don't forget leakproof layers for your bed if you decide to wear at night.
I wish I'd gotten smaller diameter diaper pins than these Baby Pants ones. They are hard to push through.
I found that a single diaper did not last me the night before it leaked, so I got some gerber diapers for stuffers. I accidentally got the prefolds, but they have a useless polyester core, don't make my mistake. They still help, but not as much as they should.

This is pretty much off topic, but I love those RD pjs. Still waiting for the weather to get cold enough here so I can wear them! Glad your roommate isn't making a big deal out of the situation.

How'd it go?
-
I've never had the opportunity to do this, but I've read on here it's best to be 100% dry when you go through the TSA check to avoid problems. If you start to smell, be sure to change right away.
Have a great time on your padded flight!
