  1. When the photos came back from Pluto, I managed to catch the seminar from one of the project leaders. It was mostly on the chemistry aspects of the mission and I don't remember much, except for the heart shaped plain of nitrogen ice. Very impressive and a bit unexpected considering it is not blue, haha.

I just want to add a little context to this. According to the memo, this is a change to Title IX, which is for programs requiring federal assistance and, chiefly, the education system, and there are legitimate reasons to want to define gender by birth, especially in the case of high school and college students, namely as it reflects on athletic participation. Now I am not talking about bathrooms or locker rooms because nobody should be that focused on what's between their teammate's legs, but on the sports themselves. There has been an uptick in America (can't speak for other Western countries) of high school women's sports records being shattered and championships being won by trans women. There are a lot of people who see this as a marginalization of equity where women simply are not able to compensate from obvious physiological differences in any given sport when competing against a trans woman with a marked height and size difference. If trans women are allowed to continue to pursue other women's athletic opportunities, they risk marginalizing cis women in programs that were designed to address this inequity in the first place.

That said, it is becoming increasingly different as the gender binary dissolves further and further with each passing day to determine who belongs where and with whom. It is a quandary when the goal is "please treat us like normal human beings" but the actions demand special treatment (and it is not helped by certain people in the LGBT community who plug their ears and just yell louder about what they deserve when someone asks "how are we supposed to do that?") so it puts federal programs, especially this one that is based on the discrimination of sex, in a huge predicament.

But Title IX also has roots in cases of sexual harassment and rape. It would be crucial for trans women and trans men to be able to identify as the gender they transitioned to in those cases so that they were properly represented and handled, especially if any headway is to be made with the number of sexual assault cases against transgender individuals.

This is false. Besides the fact that women can kick men's ass, just that women are forced to play by a different set of rules; hrt must be ongoing for a year to compete and by that time, there have been significant changes. There is no problem there, same as the bathroom shit. Also, the sexual harassment protections are actually being stripped away by our awful secretary of education, worst ever in my opinion. It's obvious Trump is making a direct attack on the LGBT community to make his uneducated base feel safer while at the same time empowering white males. Betsy Devos is setting the tone and it is no surprise a rapist went free again. Kind of off topic but related since it was stated women were also being marginalized. True, but not because of trans women.

@Diapered Jason I want my masters. But a PhD would be nice, but I thought you couldn't study for a PhD you had to be awarded it. Somthing to the affect of you do very well with your MA and then you write a thesis and get letters of recommendations from your professors and then a board considers you for your doctorat

No, you complete your bachelors, study like made for the GRE, then apply for graduate school. Graduate school is pretty much only for a PhD. Most universities don't offer a Master's degree program. Typically a masters is obtained on the way to the completion of a PhD or when you fail to get your PhD. Some departments offer a three year program where you obtain a bachelors and a masters together, but that is on a different level than a PhD.

To get your PhD, there are typically three major exams, your second year exam, your thesis proposal, and finally, your thesis defense, all of which is done in front of your thesis committee. The first one is the toughest, but it gets easier especially if you know your stuff. If you are ready, the defense is actually the easiest, but it takes time to get there. The whole thing takes 4-6 years depending on how disciplined and how much time you can allocate to your research, but only the first 2-3 years are you taking courses, and only 1-2 at a time. Most of what makes up a PhD is time spent in research with your professor. It is a job and you are employed by the university as a research assistant, but it is a fun job if you enjoy research and working with your professor.

What field are you in? Some do require college but many don't or they have positions you can advance from where a degree isn't required. I know of a guy in engineering design who does OK but he has no engineering degree, only a very good knowledge of his particular job. Similar positions exist in many fields where most people believe a degree is required but isn't. If you do go back, avoid the 'for profit' schools as a lot of those aren't accredited with the right agencies to allow you to transfer credits, and their degrees are often not accepted by larger companies. There's a good "Tech" school system here and many of the bigger companies have hiring programs through them.

Just don't get too deep in debt doing this, as the rules for student loans have changed and you can't escape or reduce that debt anymore. Maybe better to get a lower degree to get your foot in the door with a company who will provide for assistance in furthering your education through them after you've been there awhile ;)

I second this. Start at a community college to further cut costs. Also, try to pay without student loans by working a job or running a business while you are doing this. FYI, you can also make your own business. It takes work, but not anymore work than school.

Physics is good. I'm an expert in that area myself, but my field of study was something else. Unfortunately Bettypooh, in physics, you have to get a BS as an associates is only good for transfers to a university and not much else, so skip the lower degree if you want to work in your field. If you go for a PhD though, you won't accrue any tuition bills. They don't cost money in the physics and engineering disciplines since you get tuition payed+stipend when you work as a TA or RA, only costs 4-5 years of your life, but if you enjoy research, it will be the best 4-5 years of your life.

  5. Yes it is as long as it is a testable hypothesis. If it is not testable, if it cannot be measured, then it is a philosophy question and evidence is either irrelevant or non existent. Of course, that is not to say that you can always be right even if it is testable.

Retire. Pay off debts. Give half to charity. Buy a nice car I don't have to fix all the time. Buy/pay off homes for my siblings. Buy land in the hills and near the coast for vacationing. Transition to womanhood. Travel and enjoy the rest of my life however I please. If I get tired of life on the road I'll build a shop to give life to some of my project ideas. And of course make sure I'll always have enough funds to do whatever I want in comfort till I die.

You realize that you would have at max a few hundred thousand dollars after taxes and charity. A million dollars is not that much. Feds take 40%

    Yes.

You can flip that stuff on eBay or similar websites. On eBay's site, you can look up sale statistics for any particular item. Overtime, you will learn what sells and how to sell it. You could easily make an extra $1000 a week. When you get to that point, you'll probably want to report it as an LLC, but till then you will not have to report it as income. That said depending on your county's rules, having an LLC is often a neat way to say you are employed, but not making much yet, so you could qualify for more assistance, like daycare and food stamps. But once you are successful in your business, obviously, you won't need them anymore.

We can pay all our bills and pay for my kid's school and pay for gas and our food. We don't get any other assistance but social security and Oregon healthy kids plan and Medicare. We can also pay off our credit cards and we use our tax return money for things like home repairs and car repairs.

I lack talent and other skills that will give me higher income and cleaning doesn't pay enough. I can only work uneducated jobs and people have to want to hire me which is also tough. I have troubles getting a job while I can keep one. I have tried applying for other jobs in the past that isn't just cleaning but none hired me. I have thought about doing online prostitution and my only fear is becoming the female Chris Chan. I have thought about being a stripper too. I could just use my tax return savings to buy a stripper suit if I have to since I've read those can cost a $100. I tried to get into modeling too but got rejected.

Well, what works is something you enjoy, but won't also have to report as income. Do you like going to garage/yard sales or thrift stores?

Then every person on disability should be starting their own businesses then so they won't have to collect any payments from the gov. They should also pop out children so they can get more money from the gov to do well financially.

So you are not doing financially well then? I understand the welfare system and it is very limiting and frustrating. It is a stop-gap measure, nothing more, don't fool yourself into thinking otherwise. I don't know your situation, but believe me when I say the government is going to fuck you over the longer they support you. All it takes is one misplaced piece of paperwork that they lost, and you can lose it. So please, for your own benefit, think about how to raise your income in the long term.

I collect Social Security so that makes us do very good financially.

Hmmm, never seen those words together in a sentence before. Have you thought about starting your own business. If your doing well financially, then you should be able to do it at your own pace till you get things going.

About the original topic, living with your parents is alright if you are going through a crisis, but once you are back on your feet, you should get back out there. I am not one of those helicopter parents that likes to control them when there that age by making all kinds of rules, because that would mean I already failed as a parent. By the age of 18, my children should be able to make responsible choices without me telling them what to do. I know that might sound silly, but it's true. On the other hand, I know what freeloading looks like too, but dealing with that situation is not as easy as it sounds, hope I never have to.

  11. Hehe, for the op, maybe freewill cannot be obtained by thinking about it this much, because with all this philosophizing, you will have no time for any thing else in your mind. I'd say you have psyched yourself out, but that message is probably not going to get through by the time I check on this thread in a few days. After all, it's just a thought, which has no value, because no action can come of it.

  12. I think the most nauseating thing with this thread is the use of religion as a cop-out. Miracle cures are great and science doesn't have all the answers because it is science; however, if you investigate and really leave your preconceived notions at the door, with time you can find an answer.

So it sounds like you are making your claim based on your personal biases. You dont believe in God therefore there cant be miracles. And then when you ask people for proof that God exists you claim that there is no evidence because you reject it all.

I have a daughter whose severe spina bifida, complete with literal hole in the spine, was completely cured overnight. If you ever want to look for proof of the existence of God, you might want to start with a clean sheet of paper and leave your biases out of it.

This is irrational and an Occam's Razor violation. You have no evidence, only an observation. Therefore, you cannot say that Oliver d is rejecting evidence when all you got is an observation. I can believe the author's account to the fullest extent that I can, but obviously there is no evidence that a god did anything.

  14. Everyone settle down and realize this is a stupid tabloid magazine. Also, everyone realize we already have police oversight like this in the US in the form of cameras everywhere.

Personally, I think the idea is pretty smart for weather, disaster, conflict, and mapping applications.

I hated Facebook anyway, because it is a serious time waster.

  16. I think many abdls on here don't get relationship dynamics. They are hard. Abdls vary too and it is great to find a mommy that complements your interests in diapers, but none of that matters if you can't be compatible in a relationship.

Awhile back when I was dating, I looked for people with an interest in BDSM who were also dominant, because I also had interests in BDSM as well. I did not look on any dating websites though.
