  3. Hi Everyone, and Welcome to our 'newborn' Christinebw, who joined us on DD just a few hours ago! Sorry I have not contributed to this thread long ago. Anyway I got a notification dear Rachel Emily mentioned me. While my extended family is old news to long standing DD members, to bring Christinebw up to speed, urologists have found a genetic anomaly in the female descendants of a great great-grandmother. Perhaps this condition goes back long before 1900. What has happened with these women, including me and my 3 sisters, is a return to wetting when we sleep. Usually this happens at puberty, although sometimes a few months before puberty. My living maternal Granny Vi and her 2 sisters had what today is called over-active bladder (OAB) growing up, combined with smaller than average bladder capacity. Thus Granny and her sisters toilet trained late for girls of their age, at 30-36 months. Granny Vi was the oldest child in her family and is the only one still alive. At 95 she is amazingly healthy and active. Like the rest of us Granny Vi gradually lost her daytime control between her mid-teens and giving birth to her fist child (my mom Alice) when Vi was 18 and happily married for a year. Vi wore and advocated pinned gauze diapers until long after Attends and Depend reached the market in the early 1980s. Actually I was the first in my close-by extended family to transition from gauze diapers to Attends. That was in August 1981. The housing director wrote in answer to my question that her dorms did not have coin laundries. Waterproof sheets were totally accepted and the campus general store stocked the entire Attends range of sizes. I grew up near Los Angeles any my pre-law university is in the mountains of Upstate New York. The prospect of carrying loads of wet gauze diapers a mile to a washing machine did not seem practical, so I broke tradition and spent 3 weeks learning how to put on Attends and getting used to sleeping in them. Granny Vi and Grampa (99 and not very active) still live in a very nice house they purchased in the 1930s. My folks bought the house next door to the south when they married in the mid-1950's. Mom was 19 when our oldest sibling, my sister Penny, was born in 1959. Mom's youngest sister, my Aunt Betsy, was then 13 and was the last sister still living with Vi. Granny was still the executive secretary to the president of an auto factory. Mom managed an office, so a local teen gal taking night classes in community college nannied Penny until Betsy got out of school in the afternoons. Then Mom and Granny shared the chores until Penny was in bed for the night. So by then Granny and Mom were in gauze diapers 24/7. Aunt Betsy absolutely needed diapers for bed and routinely pinned on a diaper when she got home from school. Of course Penny was diapered 24/7. Then in 1991 our older brother Jack was born before Penny was ready to start toilet-training. For high school Betsy moved into a spare room of our house, because my parents were a lot less strict than Granny. According to Granny when I was born in July 1964, Jack was day dry most of the time and Penny still wet at night often enough she slept in diapers. Aunt Betsy usually wore day diapers on weekends, except when she was on a date. Granny Vi and my paternal Granny Sue (who lived a mile away) jointly ran a booth selling English Banger sausages from the beginning of Renaissance Pleasure Faire, where there were no flush toilets and Portapotties were horrid. Most of the Faire vendors and performers wore disposables or cloth diapers. I had finally been toilet trained before the end of the 1967 Ren Faire but I do not remember that. Because of the OAB Granny Vi had started the tradition of 'Just-in-Case' diapers to reduce emergency potty stops on trips and for special events for her daughters. Mom totally embraced that policy. So after finally learning to use toilets, I was back in diapers for trips longer than an hour in the car. I noticed with my 3 younger siblings Mom would diaper them for trips as short as 30 minutes. Anyway, my first vivid memory in Memorial Weekend of 1968, 6 weeks before I turned 4. Mom pulled up my Faire shift to change my diaper on the grass near the Banger booth surrounded by Faire customers. I looked up to see the actress playing Queen Elizabeth I looking at me. She exclaimed, "We are most pleased. That lass does not need to find a privy!" By then our younger brother Ed and sister Ruth had been born. They took forever to toilet trained. By then Betsy had started nursing school and grudgingly moved back in with Granny. Our youngest sister Missy was born during Ren Faire of 1969. Ruth needed diapers 24/7. Ed seldom had a dry day. The washing machines at our house and at Granny's were in use a whole lot. Betsy graduated nursing school about 1970 and married Willard. They lived in Arizona, but while we were living in Iowa in 1976 Betsy and Willard bought the house across the street from us. Their oldest child, Cousin Carole, is 18 months younger than Missy. Their older son Matthew is 14 months younger than his sister, so he was 9 when I moved at 17 to university in 1981. Matthew never gained normal nighttime control. Betsy's youngest, a boy, was born in 1978 and was the first to grow up in Pampers. Carole reverted to night wetting at puberty in 1983. Missy resumed night wetting in 1980, before she reached puberty. Thus between my siblings and Betsy's kids the only one who did not need diapers after age 3 is my big brother Jack! Certainly there might be extended families with a larger percentage of bladder problems, but we hang right in there. Granny Vi claims we kept Curity in business an extra few years. Mom and Granny knew the names of all the ladies taking phone orders at the Gerber vinyl pants factory in Three Oaks, Michigan where those adult pants were made. Mom and Dad took us there during out time in Iowa. That is the factory Gerber gave to the employees when Gerber got out of the adult incontinence business. The company name became something else. By the way, I only returned to wearing gauze diapers to bed when I started living with my loving future husband Don in May 1991. Don accepted me and owned Maytag washer and driers. Several years ago after Don recovered from prostate surgery we opened an account with DyDee Service. We simply do not have the time to wash and dry enough gauze diapers. This is what DyDee does so very well.
