I use less technically correct terminology, but more culturally correct so I call them all, as most persosn have over time, "rubber panties", inn the same way that any cola drink is a 'coke" or small, portable tissue is a kleenex". I remember having both rubber and plastic put on me as a toddler, probably under 3 y//o, and as a little on occasions between 6-3/4 and almost 10 as a little girl. An all cases they were of smooth material. So I was in them between 1948 and 55. To my knowledge, the grainy material started showing up in 1954 and the "rhumba panties" in 1957, and were usually lined with grainy material. I thought that the grainy material was trying not to be rubber panties and that the rhumba panties were simply something else lined with rubber, sort of as an afterthought. They came out with the ""Fancy Pants". Also, I have no idea of how anyone in my age group can even abide paper diapers, which unitl the late 1970's were all called "pampers". I thought of the ordinary rubber panties as mostly for girls since, between 4 and 8 they were put on girls muc h more than boys for reasons having to do with being girls and the material was smooth, therefore feminine.
