The Sentinels Chronicles: Unintended Consequences

By Elfy

Jake rolled over in bed as the unwanted morning sun shone through a gap in the curtains. He moaned tiredly as he felt the diaper between his legs push his thighs apart. The padding was swollen up as it was every morning. The incontinence that had plagued Jake since he was struck by lightning had turned him into a serial bed wetter. Not only that though but the diaper itself seemed much bigger than when he put it on. Jake had noticed several times that the diapers he took off were bigger than the ones he put on and it wasn’t just because he had wet them.

One week had passed since the lightning strike and Jake’s hopes that his body would heal had disappeared. It was rather ironic that he had been granted the power to heal and fix all sorts of things and yet he couldn’t heal the incontinence that now plagued him. Jake reached out an arm from under his cover and tapped the top of his bedside table looking for his phone. When he finally found it he saw that it was already 10:30am. He groaned as he pulled his arm back under the cover.

Jake really wasn’t sure what he was doing. It had been a week since he had sent a text to the mysterious Michael, the conspiracy theorist who had wanted to recruit Jake to a special team. Jake wasn’t sure what to expect next but it wasn’t being completely ignored like he was. He hadn’t heard back at all.

Jake was just closing his eyes again when his phone suddenly started ringing. He scrambled into a sitting position. He had hoped to see a message from Michael but he was left sorely disappointed. This was a much more unwelcome caller.

“Where have you been?” Ms. Vargas’s voice was sharp and accusatory before Jake could even say anything.

Ms. Vargas was the principal of Newgate High School. Jake had only started working there very recently but apparently it had been enough time for the older woman to take a distinct dislike to him. Most teachers called her Gabrielle, since that was her first name, but when Jake had said that he was met with an icy stare. Jake didn’t remember the principal ever complimenting on his teaching either but she often had criticisms to make. It didn’t make sense to him since she seemed much nicer with the other teachers.

“Ms. Vargas, hi…” Jake muttered.

“It’s been a week.” Ms. Vargas’ voice made Jake wince, “Where have you been? You’re happy to let everyone do your work for you?”

“I was struck by lightning.” Jake responded. He thought he would at least get some pity from the principal.

“And the message you sent me from your doctor said you were fine.” Ms. Vargas replied, “Sooner or later you have to come back to work!”

“I know, but I’m still dealing with the-” Jake started.

“Enough excuses.” Ms. Vargas interrupted, “Either you provide a doctor’s note saying you are unable to work or you come in on time tomorrow.”

Jake heard the call disconnect as soon as Ms. Vargas stopped talking. He sighed as he put his phone down on the bedside table and laid back on his bed. It was true that despite being struck by lightning he was remarkably uninjured but on the other hand he had life changing effects that he was still coming to terms with, namely the incontinence that had left him dependent on diapers.

There were other effects of the lightning strike too. Ones that made a lot less sense than his physical injuries. It hadn’t been long after he had woken up in hospital before he realised he had been granted a very strange power. In short, he could heal things. It had first manifested in him bringing a plant back from the brink of death but had also proven useful after he got beat up by some violent thugs. It was this ability to heal that had drawn Michael to him in an attempt to recruit him to a special team. Jake had eventually said he was in but hadn’t heard back since.

After a few minutes spent feeling sorry for himself Jake finally climbed out of bed. As he stood up he felt his diaper sag between his legs, a familiar feeling these days. He pulled the tapes on the padding and they came away from the front with a loud ripping noise. With one hand under the disposable Jake pulled it away from his crotch and laid it on the bed. As soon as he looked at the padding he felt his heart sink even further.

“Not again…” Jake whined quietly as his cheeks went red.

The formerly white padding was soaked and had got a dirty yellow colour but in the middle of the diaper sat a large white stain. Unlike the urine it hadn’t completely soaked in and there was only one thing that it could be. As if helplessly wetting himself wasn’t bad enough Jake had now found on several mornings that he had ejaculated in his sleep. This embarrassing problem was, as yet, unexplained.

Wishing to hide the evidence of his shame Jake balled up the diaper and taped it tightly closed just as he had for all the others he had used since coming home. His mother, Rebecca, had gone shopping after Jake came home and had presented him with a diaper pail, she clearly thought she was helping but it just served to humiliate Jake even further. He had to admit it was useful though as he dropped the used diaper into it. It was certainly better than his room smelling like a public bathroom.

Jake pulled a new diaper out of the packet under his bed and noted that he was running low. He would have to go to the pharmacy and buy more which proved to be an excruciating thought. He spread the fresh diaper out on the bed and then laid down on top of it. He pulled the front up between his legs and taped it tightly closed. It was a process he was getting increasingly skilled at completing. He placed a hand on the bottom of the padding and frowned. Could it be his imagination or was the diaper already expanding slightly? He certainly wasn’t wetting it.

Getting dressed for another day of lounging around the house, Jake pulled on a pair of baggy pants and an old t-shirt. He crinkled as he walked but there was nothing he could do about that and his family was already aware of what he was wearing. Despite the reasonable lateness of the morning Jake found his family in the living room.

“Good morning, sleepyhead.” Rebecca said with a smile.

“Hey.” Jake yawned as he walked in and over to the couch.

As Jake walked past his sister, Janet, he couldn’t help but hear her snickering at him. She was a little younger than he was and like any true sibling seemed to take pleasure in teasing her brother over such things. Jake sat down and looked at the television. He tried not to remember what had happened a couple of days before.

Jake had been soaked shortly before dinner and decided to change to avoid any embarrassments. He had been halfway through and wiping his crotch with some baby wipes when the door suddenly opened. He scrambled to cover up his modesty but all he could use was his soaked diaper. Janet stood in the doorway and saw everything. She burst into laughter as she slowly closed the door again. Jake had been extra careful to lock the bedroom door from that evening onwards.

“Any plans for the day, son?” Robert, Jake’s father, asked. He was reading through the local newspaper. Jake could see the main headline was regarding the death of a local policeman in suspicious circumstances.

“Not really…” Jake replied.

“Not going to work?” Robert continued.

“Robert!” Rebecca shook her head at him, “The poor boy is still recovering.”

This was all Jake needed. He had only been awake for minutes and yet everyone was harassing him about going back into work as if his life hadn’t changed so radically. He turned back to the television and tried to ignore the looks he was getting from his sister. He was regretting coming down from his room already.

Jake took a glass of fruit juice from the table to drink. As he swallowed the sweet liquid he simultaneously felt his bladder release. He couldn’t stop a shiver going down his spine as he wet himself in front of his family. He looked at his sister who was watching him with a smirk, there was no way she could know what he was doing though. That was what he hoped at least.

“You look different.” Janet said eventually.

Jake didn’t reply. He kept looking at the television, he didn’t want to encourage these idle speculations about himself. If he was honest he would agree with his sister. He felt different as well though what could he expect after getting hit by lightning and being granted superpowers.

“Now that you mention it…” Rebecca was leaning forwards in her seat across the table, “You do look a little different. Your face seems a little rounder or…”

“I’m going back upstairs.” Jake said simply as he pushed himself off his seat. He definitely didn’t need everyone examining him this early in the day.

“Do you need any help?” Jake’s mom asked, “If you need a hand changing your-”

“I’m fine!” Jake quickly stopped that idea before it could be fully formed. His sister let out a bark of a laugh.

This situation was awkward and horrible as it was the last thing Jake wanted was to make it even worse. Several times since he had come home from the hospital his mother had suggested she “help” him by changing his diaper and every time Jake had quickly rebuffed her. He was not a baby even if he wore the same underwear as one.

As Jake stood up his wet diaper hung slightly lower as the padding absorbed his accident. He tried not to look awkward as he walked out of the living room but he could hardly help but waddle as the expanded padding rubbed against his thighs and forced his legs apart. He thought he heard Janet snort as he waddled away but it could’ve been his imagination, he certainly didn’t dare to look back over his shoulder to check.

Jake pushed open his bedroom door listlessly and stepped inside. As he closed the door and turned to face the room he saw a little blinking light coming from his phone. He walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, he winced as he felt the warm padding pushing up against him. He picked up the phone and swiped on the screen. When he saw Michael’s name on the screen he felt his heart stop for a second. As quickly as he could he tapped on the message and started reading.

“Aceso, we’ve got a job, meet us at…” Michael’s text then listed an address.

Jake smiled. He had given up hope that Michael was going to reply to him but now he had a goal. Not just that but Michael had called him by his “superhero name.” Jake started to get dressed for going outside. He had barely left the house since coming home from the hospital. He was soon dressed and leaving his bedroom, he hadn’t even paused long enough to change his diaper. He put a couple of spare diapers in his backpack along with some other things he might need and left his room with a renewed sense of purpose.

Jake was soon sat on the bottom step and putting his shoes on. From where he was his family could see him from the seats in the living room and he was acutely aware that they looked at each other and then over to him. He knew they were all surprised that he appeared to be getting ready to go out. He was just waiting for one of them to ask.

“Going somewhere?” It was Robert who asked the question first, “To work?”

“I’m going out… to see a friend.” Jake replied semi-honestly, “I don’t know when I’ll be back.”

“OK, dear, have you got a change of diaper?” Rebecca asked as Janet sneered.

“I can look after this stuff myself!” Jake exclaimed and was turning red which for some reason made him feel good in a way, “Goodbye.”

As Jake closed the front door behind him and walked up the path he reflected on the strange feelings he seemed to get whenever he was embarrassed. Like any person he used to hate being humiliated or embarrassed and whilst he still didn’t like it he also seemed to draw some excitement from it, there was no easy way to explain his feelings.

Jake took out his phone and looked at his text again. He had a rough idea of where the address he had been given was and started heading towards the industrial area of town. He was intrigued as to why Michael had finally contacted him and what he meant when he said he had a job for them.

For fifteen minutes Jake walked until he entered an area full of warehouses, factories and storage units. He looked around for the specific building he was meant to be heading to. It was like a maze and Jake soon felt that he would never find his way back out of this area. There were large trucks passing on the road which added to the various noises coming from the large buildings on either side. Jake stopped to ask for directions a couple of times but it didn’t seem anyone could help him find the place he was looking for.

Eventually Jake stumbled on to the building almost by accident. At the far end of the estate there was an old and seemingly forgotten building that was much smaller than all the others and was pressed up against a fence. Jake could hardly believe this was the meeting point but he slowly walked towards the door regardless.

“Hello?” Jake called out as he approached a door with old peeling paint. He gave it a small push and it swung open to show a dark hallway beyond.

Jake stepped inside and slowly made his way down the hall. He felt on edge as he looked from side to side to try and see any sign of life. There were doors on both sides but they all appeared to be locked shut, there was one exception towards the back of the hallway where there was a door that had light coming from underneath it. There were muffled voices inside.

“Hello?” Jake said again. He pushed on the door and was met with an old office that seemed to have been abandoned quite some time ago. There were four people in the room and Jake only knew one of them.

“Aceso, come in, you’re the last one.” Michael look harried as he basically pulled Jake inside the room, “You weren’t followed, were you?”

“I… I don’t think so.” Jake said with a shrug and small shake of the head.

Jake saw Michael look up and down the hallway suspiciously before finally closing the door again. The paranoia he had shown on their first meeting clearly wasn’t a one-off. Jake looked around at the other people in the room and saw that the other three people were staring at him.

“Yo, Incognito, who’s this?” The voice was deep but when Jake looked at the person speaking he saw someone who was surprisingly scrawny.

“A friend, Hercules.” Michael replied as he took his place again.

“What does he do?” Asked a woman dressed up in a suit and looking very out of place compared to the others.

“He’s a healer.” Michael, or Incognito, said, “Now can we get on with it?”

There were general murmurs and shrugs around the room. Jake looked around and wondered just what he had got himself into, this didn’t seem like the meeting place for an elite unit. He watched as Michael checked through some papers and opened a map, he was intensely aware that the others were still eyeing him suspiciously.

“Right, introductions…” Michael mumbled mostly to himself. He walked up to Jake and put his arm around him, “Everyone! This is Aceso. He was struck by lightning and has healing powers.”

Jake put his hand up in an awkward but friendly wave of greeting. As he looked around he felt his diaper suddenly warm up, he hoped it wasn’t obvious that he was wetting his pants at the precise moment everyone was looking at him.

“This is Hercules.” Michael pointed at a man who looked surprisingly unimposing considering his name, “Our strongman and he seems to be very durable. Give him a punch.”

“Excuse me?” Jake frowned as he looked at Michael.

“Go on.” Michael said. He gave Jake a little shove towards this stranger, “Don’t hold back.”

Jake looked at Hercules with concern. Jake was slim and small but even he seemed big compared to the supposed “strongman.” Hercules smirked at Jake and nodded his head in encouragement to Jake. He leaned forwards and stuck out his chin, he pointed to the side as if daring Jake to hit him. The diapered man had never punched someone before but he balled up his fist and brought it back anyway. Jake swung forwards as hard as he could and felt his hand make contact with what felt like brick.

“Ow!” Jake cried out as he stumbled backwards shaking his hand. Hercules hadn’t moved an inch and laughed.

“This over here is Atalanta.” Michael said as he put his arm around Jake and directed him towards a woman who was wearing the uniform of a police officer, “She’s an archer and our stealth agent. She has enhanced senses, especially at night.”

“Just what we needed.” Atalanta sneered, “Another wimpy small guy. Look, Incognito, you can just send me in and-”

“We’re a team, Atalanta.” Incognito warned. Atalanta simply rolled her eyes.

“Last but not least we have Vapor.” Michael pointed Jake to a woman who was sat behind a desk looking at something that looked like a tablet. She was scrolling with the touchscreen and seemingly reading.

“Pleased to meet ya!” Vapor stood up and put down what Jake now realised was an e-book reader. She was smiling broadly as she held out her hand. Jake took it and had his hand shaken enthusiastically. Vapor was wearing a full suit and a bandana, unlike the others it would be easy to pick her out of a crowd.

“Vapor can produce a mist around her that can give people… debuffs.” Michael said.

“Debuffs?” Jake asked.

“Yeah, you know, making people weaker, slower or stuff like that.” Michael replied.

“Can we just get on with this?” Atalanta asked loudly, “I’m itching to get this guy.”

Jake felt Michael’s arm leave him as he returned to the front of the room. Jake looked around and decided to stay next to Vapor who seemed much happier to be there than the others. It wasn’t long before she was sat back down in her seat looking at her electronic book though and Jake was left standing nearby awkwardly.

This all felt quite overwhelming for Jake. He had been waiting for Michael to call him but he hadn’t expected to seemingly walk into the middle of an in progress operation. He didn’t really know what was happening but was too afraid to ask when he already felt like the other “heroes” were judging him. He finally took off his backpack and put in on top of a spare desk.
